I remember watching this as a kid and I still have the same critique as then... Why would they be celebrating in California? It's only nine o'clock there, three hours difference.
NEWS FLASH! Ray Glasser posted the same New Year's show not from Dick Clark, it was from CBS where they did a special called "Happy New Year America 1987-88". This special was a competitor to Dick Clark. Go watch one of Ray Glasser's New Year's videos, and you'll might see the 1987-88 ball drop without Dick Clark shouting.
Aww- I like Dick Clarks shouting. I've watched his show from the age of 3 days old in 73/74 till now! And I hope he's able to shout out that countdown for one more year to ring in 2009!!
That little descrption at the top of the clip is what set Dick Clark, and before that Ben Grauer and Bob Trout, TOTALLY apart from the other people who do this gig on 12/31. He does his homework and even if he's reading a prepared script he makes it sound natural. (I was in the square for 1991-going-into-92 and saw how he worked). Clark was/is a true broadcaster.
Mr. Clark at his prime. One of my favorite broadcasters. That he has lasted so long after his stroke (regardless of his speech) and will jet to NYC each year for this is testimony to a strong person inside.
Dick Clark was already doing CBS' $25,000 Pyramid.

It appeared for the first time for New Year 1982 and it was last used for the New Year you see here. The white ball came back for New Year 1989.

I wish Ray Glasser (aka "videoholic2008" formerly "Videoholic2007") would love to see this.
