It is easily a masterpiece! I think the choice of marriage in the movie as being the last encounter to report tells us there is this thing we believe, that we live in a perfect and puritanical world but not so. In the movie a day of happiness is turned into a realm of chaos and control. She is depressed but most of her pain comes from others and their expectations of her. The end seems tranquil and not as frightening like other films have shown, it's like the end brings her and us solace...
I suffered from depression in my teen years and this movie affected me a lot. I really identified with Justine in this movie. I've always had this notion that I try to keep at bay in order to function, that life, life on Earth at least, is inherently evil. Biology seems to function on a vampire like predatory economy. It's obscene. A part of my wouldn't mind knowing that this circus will come to an end.
