50 years ago America had a strong manufacturing core and a healthy middle class. It doesn't have that anymore, which is why Detroit is a ghost town. It was a town that was built upon industry, but when those jobs disappeared so did the town!
I live in Detroit (as a student). I dont know about the 60s, 70s, and 80s, but word is now: If they dont want to come here (White) we can afford to live--no matter in what squaller. A really nice home can cost $35,000 in Detroit; where in other communities the same home costs $2 to 2,500,000. I cant say that Im mad at them, but I would like to see the city a nicer one--as this, and other footage suggests it was.

Black people have lived in Detroit since the mid 1800s. In fact the first race riots were in 1863. When the largest group of black people moved to Detroit, between 1900 and 1930, Detroit was at it's most prosperous. All those new black workers helped the auto industry grow. So the decline is not because "...the blacks moved in..." They've been in Detroit for over 140 years.
Detroits black population really didn't explode until the 1930s and 40s when a black wave left Mississippi for better jobs. But even up until the late 50s blacks were never more then 15 to 20%.
That changed when the highway system was built in the 1950s and whites who once made up 80% of the city started to leave for jobs outside the city. The decline was unstopable once the black population reached 30%, and then the city started it's long but fast decline.
Because whites are. When whites that have the money and control the capital of a city that has 20 blacks and the rest whites and then whites move to the suburbs we wonder why the city caved in. A few hundred thousand blacks, even if all were wealthy cannot maintain a city designed for 2 million.
Detroit was a magnified example of extreme racism in America in the 1950's and before. America was the MOST racists nation on earth.

Actually the '68 Olympics were awarded years before 1968. It wouldn't make sense the give the games, or any other large event, in the same year it is held. The '68 Summer Games were awarded to Mexico City; a week before the games, Mexico City police killed btween 200-300 student protesters. The '67 riots were NOT the cause for Detroit not getting the Olympic. The cause was just that the IOC members thought MC had a better venue, etc.

Coleman Young succeeded Jerry Cavanaugh as Detroit's mayor(or was it Gribbs?) In any case, when Young took office, the city went straight down the turlet. Detroit has improved immensely since these days.

If a person comes to the defense of his people, and stands to correct the oppressive, abusive culture of Detroit, he's a racist? A rascist is a person/corporation that belongs to the ruling class of the land.(White People). Savages couldn't be the original people of the planet! Do some economy research, and see that white flight hurts ALL!! Stop runnin', 'cause there's no place to hide.

And blacks who could afford it also moved to the suburbs or left the city. Some whites still live in Detroit though. I know a few from there.

White flight actually started in the late 1940's,that's when Oak Park and all the surrounding suburbs started to take form. The 1967 riots just accelerated white flight.

Actually ripogome it was Coleman Young and his homies that ruined Detroit forever. Too bad Billy Bonds didn't have the guts to kick his ass when he had the chance.

actually timwmartin detroit was already on the decline before young got there. what we have now is the result of fighting back aagainst tyranny, and a lot of spite and and even more excuses.

Wow, the zoo never looked that cool when I was there. Detroit looks like it was pretty awesome, before I was born there. Maybe I screwed it up!?
