you dont need to hold volume up just hold home button and sleep/wake down at same time and if it dont work it has water damage and you need to take it to apple

I have iPhone 3GS since November 2009. I got iOS 5 on Sunday night & it's now Tuesday. Literally.. my phone is GONE! It keeps going to the WSoD since yesterday (Monday) night. I've restored it... this is the second time. It doesn't always stay on the WSoD though. And painfully, my lock button just randomly stopped working last week? and download your device's firmware

shift+restore it to the firmware on itunes and it will work

This will only work if IPhone white screen is a software issue. If it's a hardware issue this won't work. White screen can be caused by software and hardware so it may work for some people and may not work for others.
