  • My father died in a wreck on the highway when I was seven months old. My mother was 27 and didn't know she was pregnant with my younger brother. She never re-married. She gave her life to us. Her life before that was hard. I wish she didn't have to be so strong. A lovely woman who spent her life making up for fortune's mistakes.

  • This kills me, when The River came out it was panned as too depresing but as time went by I think this whole album is the best he's ever done, a great story and a lesson for us all. what a GENIUS!

  • I hope Bruce knows what his version means to us, there is so much emotion in his voice it blows me away how powerfull this song is.

  • Some times you just need to hear a song that describes how your feeling. This is the best song ever. The reason I say this is my sister died that way at 22 and I just listen and cry and it makes me feel better.

  • last minute of this song is pure beauty...wish the album version goes on and on forever

  • 3:10 so much emotion......love it.

  • This was my favourite on this album...and Drive All Night...and the River...and Stolen Car......great memories

  • This is NOT Stolen Car!!!!! This song is as the title describes: "Wreck on th Highway" - from The River album. One of Bruces more emotional songs. Great!

  • This cold wet summmer my son was killed by a drunk driver and my life was shattered . Listening to it all those years ago before my son was born I thought it as one of his most heartbreakingly, painfull of songs and I still do.. but logic? I know there is none.

    Peace, Suz

  • What's even more strange is how people connect this song directly to their personal stories of car accidents. It seems that the metaphor that Bruce uses becomes more fully explained when the literal sense of the song actually occurs to a person. I have been fortunate enough to understand the power and depth of this song without witnessing a wreck myself, but Bruce speaks true, and he speaks strongly.

  • This is such a great song. Almost makes me cry every time I hear it. Only a few musicians are able to touch such a wide range of feelings as Bruce does.

I tend to find my favorites from his ballads rather than the somewhat more easy going songs.

  • This is so underated, even by Bruce himself!

  • I love these kind of songs from Bruce, so much better than working on the highway, glory days, etc.

  • The Boss at his best

  • goose bumps ja Baas, song is just lekker,

  • An absolutely incredibly heartfelt song from the Boss. So intimate that you think he must have experienced it himself. If he didn't, then I think you have the answer to his supreme talent.

  • thanks so much suz ,,i wish same peace for you also luxxie

  • this song is so sad my second love of my life got killed in auto wreck in 86 ,,i still miss him luxxie

  • Oh, luxxie I know. I just lost my 20 yr old son to " A Wreck on the Highway"

Yes, it is SO very sad, but Bruce does have a way of bringing comfort. I hope you find some...

    Peace, Suz

  • thats a nice song(ish)

  • I cry when I hear this song , so amazing

  • YES IT IS.

  • this song is deep, but o so awsome

  • Fantastic! The greatest storyteller ever!

  • amazing

    xx

  • Fantastic!

  • What an absolutely beautiful song, it brings me to tears. Thx for posting this gem.

  • i love this song, even though it is so sad. i can imagine what it would be like. i would love someone to post a clearer and more up to date version if there is one available.

  • I never understood the lyrics on the original.

In the verse he says" Last night I was out drivng..." and in the last one""Sometimes I wake up in the darkness". Only in the past night? I wouldnt bother too much then...

  • I think he means that in the beginning he is telling the story of how it happened that night a long time ago, starting with that that night he was driving home from a working day. Then he is in the present where he is waking up in the middle of the night remembering....

  • Nah...he suffers from a case of civilian PTSD. It is more common among military and police, fire, ems people. But I have known a few civilians that experienced a traumatic event such as this and it altered their personalities in various ways. In this case he remembers the accident and someones loss, and thinks about what if it was him.And as a result he has become a little more appreciative and loving of his lover.

  • I am with you himself ? You mean a victim or an observer / participant ?

  • This song is so sad!

  • This is the song!!

  • One of my favorite songs from "The River" A song straight from the heart and right "out of our lives". Because everybody can be in this situation. The lyrics are easy to understand and his "emotional" voice and way of singing is great. Bruce your still one of my favorite musicians.

  • Nice to see this one performed live. Slow, intense vocal there by Springsteen.

  • Absolutely love this. That album covers a whole spectrum of emotions. This and Stolen Car are my favourites. Heart-wretching.

  • such a sad song...

  • The text of this song is sad, it´grabs your heart!

  • Another outstanding Bruce moment

  • fantastic...

  • Always a favorite from The River!

  • mein absolutes Lieblingslied vom Boss
