I found this to be a very enjoyable book, but it's not really a practical advice book on how to live off the grid. At least not for someone who does not have a significant amount of capital to start off with. Nevertheless, I do find myself inspired by his story, and I wish him the best of luck.
I agree with him on the use of not wanting to use non-electric fuels (especially when the electric he's getting and generating is essentially FREE.)
From the video I don't see much in the way for trees that he CAN use for a woodstove for the whole winter. And if he could, why would he? He's got free, CLEAN electric power to heat his home and run his essentials.
He is right, though - the deisel engine was NOT designed for use with a combustible liquid.
I went to see him talk at the National Geographic in D.C. and it was okay, but he really has no idea on what he is doing and/or the credibility to write a book on this. Yeah he came from city and went 'Green' but seriously he isn't doing what he really is portraying in this video or website. For example: the stove is electric, why? okay he explained in this speech about the not wanting to use fuels, humm hello wood stove? heat in the winter and great for cooking and many other things.
Wood stoves really put out the smoke, and are very tricky to use. I cooked on a wood cook stove for over 6 years, so have a clue about it. All wood stoves put out an lot of smoke unless you have very dry wood and really know what you are doing, especially when starting the fire. Electric is better
Wood heat tends to be either too hot or too cold. We switched to 98% efficient propane gas wall unvented room heaters and really like them. You can back up to them to get warm, and the temp is even.
I saw him in person, he did a lecture at my university :)

Doug Fine should get himself a Diesel Subaru (which isn't in the USA, sadly). Other than that, his efforts are very impressive.

Reminds me of when I was off the grid, except he has the solar thing going. I hope that one day we can do the same! Solar is great!

Um, he just said in this video that he's not running the stove off of solar, so what is your point?
