I just bought this rifle 20in barrel HBAR. Havent fired it yet. I have a question.. COLT makes an actual AR 15. it says it right in the receiver. It does not say AR on this or my receiver...Is it still an AR 15???
Notice the pin above the selector. Good old Colt decided to put in a sear block inside the receiver. They also milled the underside of the bolt carrier all the way to the rear so the bottom of the bolt carrier from the firing pin back is open. And they also put a non-mil-spec screw in place of the front take down pin. The Colt Sporter Match HBAR R6601 also came with two 20 round magazines - which were pop-riveted to a 5 round capacity. Grrrrrr...
When I was in the reserves we were using the Diameco (now Colt Canada) C7A1 20 inch barrel and full stock so I think i'd want this style AR over an M4 style. Can you still get these with a bayonet lug? I know Rock River still makes an M16A2 style rifle not sure if they are a 1:7 or 1:9 twist though. Sootch do you own this rifle? If so how do you like it compared to the M4 style? Even today the Canadian Army uses this style 20" with a triad rail and an adjustable stock.
the corps was the first to recieve the m16a2 through 4 because they love it so much and i actualy have one of these can any one tell me some more info? mine has a bayonet lug on it so im not sure if thats rare or not
Probably the most important change on the H BAR Sporter is the mod to the bolt carrier. The rear end of the hammer opening in the M16 trips the auto sear, on this one they milled that surface away so a bolt carrier from this wont trip an auto sear. This was because ATF made "FA Bolt Carriers" into naughty parts if you put them in an AR15; though they've changed their minds on the matter now, and they are no longer considered "naughty".
@semiautoriflelover Thats sad to hear bout your troubles with your 74. My Tantal hasnt given me any problems ever! I've put maybe 4k rounds through it, and just did the normal cleaning with Windex and stored away perfect. I like the AR-15, just not its eating habits, but hey too each is own I still think he should talk about the AK74 series rifles. They are gaining popularity and are a fine rifle in most cases.
So glad you did this video. I was wondering about these as kits from AR-15.com. They are much more affordable and use Colt parts as well as some others. I'd also like to mention that I also love smelling that gun powder!
Heavy Barrels have been proven to be a sales gimmick now Sooch. Unless your one of those serious, serious paper punchers it just adds unnecessary weight to the rifle. I honestly didn't think three was anyone left who didn't understand that, but live and learn.
@semiautoriflelover Don't get me wrong. The AR15 is a fine weapon and I'm not sure how familiar you are with the m16 or shootering the ar15 in less then ideal conditions. I carried an m16 in 29 palms. The weapon was NOT design for sand. What makes it accurate is also it flaw. The tolerance are to tight. So, it's not if, but when it it fails to fire. The ak is the exact opposite. It's nothing but a loose fit. About the cleaning them I clean the ak by pushing the barrel, and wiping out the carbon.
@semiautoriflelover Really? Which branch is using that? It just sounds a little light for a sure-kill. No doubt you could hit the target, but are they having good kill effect with them?
The irony here is that although the Colt AR-15 is made in Connecticut, it is specifically banned by name under Connecticut's 'assault rifle' ban and cannot be bought in Connecticut unless the receiver was made before the ban [or you have a Class III FFL or pay the BATFE tax stamp].
An interesting sidenote: the M16A2 is seeing new life, as the US government has been issuing their existing stocks of them to the Afghan National Army, in order to replace the AK-47 and its variants.
The irony here is that although the Colt AR-15 is made in Connecticut, it is specifically banned under Connecticut's 'assault rifle' ban and cannot be bought in Connecticut.
A1 sight also has two apertures.set for two distances. They are both the same size holes. A1 sights don't have the range adjustment that the A2 has and so the A1 sight is more robust (fewer parts) and lighter weight.
I highly recommend buying a lower reciever (shipped to your FFL) and buying the rest of the parts on the internet to save $500 off Sootch00's rifle (you don't need a Colt). Check out ar15.com for building advice.
Steel case ammo does not expand (as much) to seal in the chamber. This gives a lot of blow-back and fouling in the chamber. It is this fowling of the chamber that leads to sticky cases; especially if you foul it all up and then switch to brass cases. The brass will expand and grab the fowled chamber and get stuck. Steel cased ammo is fine in an AR as long as you know the limitations.
The barrel was actually changed because of the ammo change, not the other way around. In the 70's, NATO began pushing for a new standard round, and the SS109 armor penetrating round was selected. The SS109 is heavier than the standard M193, so a new 1:9 twist was developed. However, the tracer version of the SS109 (and the name escapes me) is even heavier, and needs a 1:7 twist. So, instead of issuing two different barrel twists, the military made all rifles 1:7.
I have that same exact gun made in 1993, love it, its my fav gun. The guy I purchased it from had some pretty expensive optics mounted on it, I took them off and only use the iron sites, !
Good video, but I'd like to point several things if I may. First, the rear flip sight...the smaller aperture is for normal distance shooting out to max, and the larger aperture is for low light shooting, and is used while wearing the protective mask.
The version you have is an A4, as it has a removable carrying handle, the A2s have a fixed carrying handle.
My unit was one of the first to receive the new A2s in 1986 while I was stationed in Germany. I carried an A4 in Iraq in 2005 on OIF III.
glad Sootch00 mentioned "field of engagement".. because that was one of the major reasons the US went away from the M-14 .308 to the M-16. Why have soldiers haul a heavier gun w/ heavier ammo to strike a 50 yrd target.. when 90% of fire happens @ 50-100 yards.. tho w/ the failure probs of the early models.. I'd take the M-14
@1776PatriotTeen AUG has an HBAR version as well so I doubt thats what most people would accept that as HBARS meaning. But the .50 cal HB is abbreviated as M2 HB instead of HBAR so I can see how it gets confusing.
@suntzu302 I have held the LMT at a gun shop. Its nice but the grip on it is what i do not like but the one I really like the best is Smith & Wesson M&P AR15.
Anyone interested in an AR should keep an eye out for pawns, and trade-ins at their local gun shop, also gun shows - and the newspaper classifieds are a good idea.
I've got one of those! It's from the preban days, but when Colt tried to self-regulate by putting a larger .315" pin in the front. Kind of a pain in the rear because you need adapter pins when using a mil-spec upper, but at least it's preban so I can put an "evil" collapsible stock on it and keep my "evil" flash hider in this repressive state.
You also get more "stopping power" out of the 20in. You gain about 120fps per inch you increase the barrel length. So 16-20in is about a 480fps difference, which is pritty substancial when you are talking about a small cartrige.
I had one of those. Bought in 93 sold it 94. Cleaning it was a nightmare. To many tiny places for carbon to hide, but it did shoot well. The Seabees' had the A1 until I got out in 94. Another difference is the A1 have full auto and the A2 had 3 round burst control....The Marines I talked to hated the A2
Great video, btw, @ 1:30, you mention 1 in 12 inch twist as being too fast...that's actually a slower twist. 1 in 7 is a much faster twist. One complete revolution of the bullet in 7 inches of barrel instead of 12 inches of barrel.
Thats the style I like the best over one's with multi position stock. 20"barrel and what the Diameco now Colt Canada's C-7 was based on for the Canadian Forces and we removed the carry handle and put on a C79 Optical sight by Elcan.
Like all of your vidz. Awesome stuff. You neglected to mention that the M4 is a far more effective weapon in an urban field of battle. In close quarters tactical situations the M4's dimensions make far more of an ideal weapon than the M16. "M4" not a forgery just an adaptation for today's type of combat-- close quarters, urban tactical. Love your vide bro, you really get us talking in
@Solareffects Check out BCM Rifles. Everything is mil spec on it with only exception of course being its semi-auto only. It's built to the same quality as Colt.
I love my HBAR 20in bushmaster X15 upper ona stag 15 lower with a KAC knights armnament company M5 raill.....get one for your rifle! they run like 300 bucks and are marine issued so you know they are badass.
the differences between the m4/m16 are next to nil. the max effective on a point target of the m16 is 600, the m4 is 550. the reason for that is the accuracy due to the shortened sight radius of the iron sights.
when i was issued the m4 i had no problem qualifying expert on the range, at 500yds.
@Dakeyofawsome it was probably because he was getting ready for the rifle to shoot itself even though it was unloaded, no mag in the magwell and no finger near the trigger.
Got your twist rates backwards. Heavier bullets need a faster twist (1 in 7" vs 1 in 12"). Not sure the exact equation, but ideal rotation rates are a function of bullet diameter/length (hence weight), and velocity.
Another cool, succinct, and thorough video. Keep up the good work.
HBAR is too heavy. The primary advantage of the AR15 platform of weapons is its light weight by use of polymer materials. This advantage is stripped away with a 20 inch heavy barrel. If your AR weighs more than 7 pounds, you're better off with an AK. If it weighs double that then you have an HBAR.
It's so frustrating that in Canada that if i want to have an AR15 I'm only allowed to shoot it at an approved range and i have to have a transport permit. Can't even hunt with one or shoot gophers or anything like that
@adolfhilter When I bought mine, the gun shop owner told me specitically NOT to use Wolf nor any steel cased ammo, for fear that it would damage the chamber. I took him at his word and have not tried it. I use the brass 100 round packs available at Walmart.
@adolfhilter I personally don't like Steel cased ammo in my AR's. I'll shoot it in the AK or SKS because those guns are made to shoot that stuff. That's just my opinion. Thanks~ Sootch00
@sootch00 I have put a couple thousand rounds of wolf ammo though my A1 and haven't observed any damage or marring to my chamber/BC group... just an observation
@mycaddigo Golden tiger and Barnaul are two laquered- coated types of ammo that are in new production, and I have broke an extractor on wolf ammo before... Also sometimes the primers in the Russian stuff throw crap down the barrel that can clog a gas tube...
Honestly (before seeing your video) I'd would rather have a m16 than an m4. Don't get me wrong. I think m4's are cool and are some sexy pieces of machinery. But I want the long barrel m16 for the accuracy. You can have the most powerful gun in the world but it won't make any difference if you're not accurate with it.
Great vid, bro! I ran out and bought precisely that model at the height of the Obama gun panic after I heard Barbara Boxer say that no private citizen should own one (and paid a premium for the privelge, I assure you!). Oddly, mine lacks the flash hider, nor is it tapped for one. Have to look into that. Otherwise, you are right, that rifle is a blast to shoot!
@josh1303 It'll shoot .223 and/or 5.56. None of the sexy stuff that the new-styled ar-15 starwars guns have, but I was surprised how gratifying shooting 100 yds with iron sigts can be!
1:12(1 rotation of the bullet every 12 inches) rifling is slower than 1:7(1 rotation every 7 inches). 1:7 is better for heavier bullets because the added rotation helps to stabilize it in flight. Also, the length of the barrel doesn't affect accuracy; only muzzle velocity(which translates to range).
@Solareffects Cool man, I've got a buddy in town who's currently in the Marine Corps. He's stateside and doesn't get to shoot very often so we had a blast last weekend out with my AR.
@Solareffects RRA, is not best bang for buck, a little pricey. IMO, Bravo Company Manufacture makes the best bang for buck. It's on same quality level as Colt, but half the price. For around $1000, you can get a military BCG, M4 feed ramp and superior fit and finish. Google them.
Great review, I have that same rifle. Awesome, very accurate. I've heard a lot about the Full size vs. M4, and I love them both and think they both have purpose. In defense of the M4, sure the full size can shoot out to 500, or 600, but how effective vs. people is 5.56 past 300 yards, really? Good on paper target, not so much personnel. one thing: AR (or HBAR) is Armalite Rifle, not Automatic (or Assault) Rifle.
When my AR goes to the range, it is usually the 20" with standard handguard over the 16" and rails. I just like the longer sight radius (open sights). Thanks for the detailed video!
I tend to believe the reason didn't go over well was the size of the caliber. Most hunters favor a 30 caliber.5.56/40 gr virus7.62/168gr. In the Military, battlefield site is 250 m. Reason is danger close for artillery fire is 300m. Of course for a soldier, there is a major difference between carrying 180 rds of 5.56 virus 180 rds of 7.62
@Solareffects There are many affordable brands, Bushmaster has a variety of basic ARs that are reasonably priced. I bought a Stag Arms from approx $800. There are many other brands though.
Sootch, 1 in 7 is actually a faster twist rate then 1 in 12. It means 1 turn in 7 inches vs 1 turn in 12 inches. So a 1 in 7 or a 1 in 8 barrel twist in a shorter length of the barrel then a 1 in 12 and give greater rotational speed to the bullet. This works well especially in shorter barreled AR's and allows heavier bullet weights, those above 62 or 69 grains, like the 77 grainers that are popular for longer range competition.
@shanehey 1 in 7 spins a lot faster but it slows the velocity of the round down. The more it spins the more forward resistance there is but it can spin a lot faster creating more stability in the round
Hey sootch. i love these videos bro. I'm probably joining the army soon, and i have some friends already in. I've convinced them that the AR15 is a good platform considering all the possibilities for customization. (7.62 uppers, P90 uppers, butt stocks, pistol grips, triggers, hand guards, sights, etc)
I just bought this rifle 20in barrel HBAR. Havent fired it yet. I have a question.. COLT makes an actual AR 15. it says it right in the receiver. It does not say AR on this or my receiver...Is it still an AR 15???

So, instead of issuing two different barrel twists, the military made all rifles 1:7.

Being a Colt is this much more expensive than a Rock River, Bushmaster etc?
NovaScotiaNewfie 11 months ago
Thats the style I like the best over one's with multi position stock. 20"barrel and what the Diameco now Colt Canada's C-7 was based on for the Canadian Forces and we removed the carry handle and put on a C79 Optical sight by Elcan.
NovaScotiaNewfie 11 months ago
I had one of those on layaway but the price was to stiff for me $1700 came with 2 20 round mags and a .22lr conversion and 1 10 round .22 lr mag

@DKtrecour might be i have a mil spec a2 by Armalite and it has a fixed carry handle so im a little confused??!!
GunPerson45 11 months ago
Like all of your vidz. Awesome stuff. You neglected to mention that the M4 is a far more effective weapon in an urban field of battle. In close quarters tactical situations the M4's dimensions make far more of an ideal weapon than the M16. "M4" not a forgery just an adaptation for today's type of combat-- close quarters, urban tactical. Love your vide bro, you really get us talking in
daghost36 11 months ago
i thought hbar was heavy barrel? notice your gun will have a heavier barrel profile than a standard m16a2.
Timb0NZ 11 months ago
@Solareffects Check out BCM Rifles. Everything is mil spec on it with only exception of course being its semi-auto only. It's built to the same quality as Colt.

the larger aperture is for up to 200, hence the name the 02 sight, for 0-200.
unmotomarine0351 11 months ago
the differences between the m4/m16 are next to nil. the max effective on a point target of the m16 is 600, the m4 is 550. the reason for that is the accuracy due to the shortened sight radius of the iron sights.
when i was issued the m4 i had no problem qualifying expert on the range, at 500yds.
unmotomarine0351 11 months ago
@Dakeyofawsome it was probably because he was getting ready for the rifle to shoot itself even though it was unloaded, no mag in the magwell and no finger near the trigger.
808Arsenal 11 months ago
Clean informative academic review for AR fans. Very Nice. I like when you do this style.
* Hbar is good in any distance shooter, but Direct Impingement system = jam machine. Piston systems forever :)
* Just personally speaking I would not engage past 200 m max with a 5.56, after that its into 308 country
HighValueWarrior 11 months ago
Got your twist rates backwards. Heavier bullets need a faster twist (1 in 7" vs 1 in 12"). Not sure the exact equation, but ideal rotation rates are a function of bullet diameter/length (hence weight), and velocity.
Another cool, succinct, and thorough video. Keep up the good work.
entoptics 11 months ago
HBAR is too heavy. The primary advantage of the AR15 platform of weapons is its light weight by use of polymer materials. This advantage is stripped away with a 20 inch heavy barrel. If your AR weighs more than 7 pounds, you're better off with an AK. If it weighs double that then you have an HBAR.

It's so frustrating that in Canada that if i want to have an AR15 I'm only allowed to shoot it at an approved range and i have to have a transport permit. Can't even hunt with one or shoot gophers or anything like that

Does it feed Wolf ammo?
adolfhilter 11 months ago
@adolfhilter When I bought mine, the gun shop owner told me specitically NOT to use Wolf nor any steel cased ammo, for fear that it would damage the chamber. I took him at his word and have not tried it. I use the brass 100 round packs available at Walmart.
BestoinkDooly 11 months ago
@adolfhilter I personally don't like Steel cased ammo in my AR's. I'll shoot it in the AK or SKS because those guns are made to shoot that stuff. That's just my opinion. Thanks~ Sootch00
sootch00 11 months ago 12
@sootch00 I have put a couple thousand rounds of wolf ammo though my A1 and haven't observed any damage or marring to my chamber/BC group... just an observation
l3nnz3 11 months ago
@sootch00 i was wondering if yours is chambered in the 5.56? also wich does the military use the 556 or the 223 version.

1mrgasgas1 11 months ago
@sootch00 Shooting steel case, lacquered ammo in a Ar is just asking for trouble, like broken extractors, plugged gas tubes, and sticky chambers.
mechanisto1832 11 months ago
@mechanisto1832 they haven't use lacquer on the steel ammo in a long time
mycaddigo 11 months ago
@mycaddigo Golden tiger and Barnaul are two laquered- coated types of ammo that are in new production, and I have broke an extractor on wolf ammo before... Also sometimes the primers in the Russian stuff throw crap down the barrel that can clog a gas tube...
mechanisto1832 11 months ago
@adolfhilter Some will, and some won't. Mine feeds that ammo just fine.
esh325 11 months ago
@adolfhilter it will cycle that wolf crap just fine
mycaddigo 11 months ago
Thanks for the info, Sootch.

Otherwise, you are right, that rifle is a blast to shoot!

josh1303 11 months ago 2
@josh1303 It'll shoot .223 and/or 5.56. None of the sexy stuff that the new-styled ar-15 starwars guns have, but I was surprised how gratifying shooting 100 yds with iron sigts can be!

1:12(1 rotation of the bullet every 12 inches) rifling is slower than 1:7(1 rotation every 7 inches). 1:7 is better for heavier bullets because the added rotation helps to stabilize it in flight. Also, the length of the barrel doesn't affect accuracy; only muzzle velocity(which translates to range).
jrmym2 11 months ago
@jrmym2 More time spent in barrel is typical more time spent accelerating to muzzle velocity, right?
EchoOfLohengrin 11 months ago
Comment removed
jrmym2 11 months ago
@EchoOfLohengrin slower rotation has nothing to do with velocity.
jrmym2 11 months ago
@jrmym2 I am aware. I was speaking of the barrel length alone. The more time it spends being pushed by the propellant, the faster it should go.
EchoOfLohengrin 11 months ago
@EchoOfLohengrin That's true

@Solareffects Cool man, I've got a buddy in town who's currently in the Marine Corps. He's stateside and doesn't get to shoot very often so we had a blast last weekend out with my AR.

eastcoastpatriot 11 months ago
@Solareffects RRA, is not best bang for buck, a little pricey. IMO, Bravo Company Manufacture makes the best bang for buck. It's on same quality level as Colt, but half the price. For around $1000, you can get a military BCG, M4 feed ramp and superior fit and finish. Google them.

Hey sootch00, you should check out the new SP901 7.62mm nato AR rifle Colt's coming out with.
Everett07630 11 months ago
@BerettaL0v3r Rifling is a spiral, so the "twist" is the distance for the spiral to complete one revolution.
eiwaz 11 months ago
Great review, I have that same rifle. Awesome, very accurate. I've heard a lot about the Full size vs. M4, and I love them both and think they both have purpose. In defense of the M4, sure the full size can shoot out to 500, or 600, but how effective vs. people is 5.56 past 300 yards, really? Good on paper target, not so much personnel. one thing: AR (or HBAR) is Armalite Rifle, not Automatic (or Assault) Rifle.
762x51n8o 11 months ago
When my AR goes to the range, it is usually the 20" with standard handguard over the 16" and rails. I just like the longer sight radius (open sights). Thanks for the detailed video!

dkbonney1775 11 months ago
I tend to believe the reason didn't go over well was the size of the caliber. Most hunters favor a 30 caliber.5.56/40 gr virus7.62/168gr. In the Military, battlefield site is 250 m. Reason is danger close for artillery fire is 300m. Of course for a soldier, there is a major difference between carrying 180 rds of 5.56 virus 180 rds of 7.62

stuntmanmike37 11 months ago
Sootch, 1 in 7 is actually a faster twist rate then 1 in 12. It means 1 turn in 7 inches vs 1 turn in 12 inches. So a 1 in 7 or a 1 in 8 barrel twist in a shorter length of the barrel then a 1 in 12 and give greater rotational speed to the bullet. This works well especially in shorter barreled AR's and allows heavier bullet weights, those above 62 or 69 grains, like the 77 grainers that are popular for longer range competition.

can you explain what would happen if you shoot normal nato rounds through 1 in 7 twist
MrMike2blu 11 months ago
lol I will add that to the list of rifles I am buying
an10nee 11 months ago
Sootch you know 1 in 7 means 1 twist every 7 inches making it allot faster than 1 in 12 twist.
shanehey 11 months ago 2
@shanehey 1 in 7 spins a lot faster but it slows the velocity of the round down. The more it spins the more forward resistance there is but it can spin a lot faster creating more stability in the round
