Yes, I just vaguely remmeber that they still had this sort of stuff on up until 1985 and beyond. I remember them having these weekend specials on from the time I was really litle, but then watching them less and less and becoming less and less aware of them as i got older, as we typically do. I wish I'd watched more of them, but at least I watched enough to have a nostalgic feeling associated with this music.
I remember one with a little boy that lost his hair, and he made something with peanut-butter that made it keep on growing....Does anyone know the name of that special?
Interesting...the milk carton in the Frosted Flakes commercial is Lucerne (name taped up), the Safeway dairy label. That design was in use up to the early 90s...
Amazing looking at a tv version of this - it's my favourite book from my childhood. I live very near where the book is based and I can really relate to it...very strange seeing it 'Americanized' - no disrespect, but it seems really odd not seeing the green frields of Oxfordshire and the Glyme valley. I met Penelope Lively when she visited our school in Woodstock and she signed a copy of one of her books for me.
I'd love to see a recording of the ABC Weekend Special for the three-part Ruby-Spears adaptation of Jack Stonley's "Scruffy" (1980), whoever has that to share, that is . . .
The special stars the voices of Nancy McKeon ("Facts of Life"), Hans Conried, Alan Young. :)
I absolutely loved "Scruffy!" I have an old copy on VHS, which I bought at the Price Club (now Costco) back in the early 90s. I haven't converted it to DVD yet, though. Someone uploaded the opening theme a while back, but their account was suspended, presumably for other copyright violations, since I doubt there's anyone out there trying to yank obscure Ruby-Spears cartoons off YouTube.
Kara, I don't have it on DVD, but you should contact Muzikman74. He has a whole bunch of ABC Weekend Specials available, including "Scruffy." I ordered three other specials from him a few months ago and was very pleased to be able to see some of my old favorites again.
@AnnainCA I remember, for some reason, that there was a Special in which three kids, including a little girl who loved a little doll, were doing some sort of Top 10 thing, and collected, what seems to be, a bunch of records. Is that one of those specials by any chance?
That doesn't sound familiar to me, but there are a lot of ABC Weekend Specials that I either haven't seen or don't remember very well. The only ones I really know are "The Secret World of Og," "Scruffy," "Cougar," "Mayday, Mayday" "All the Money in the World," "The Dog Days of Arthur Cane," "The Amazing Bunjee Venture," and "The Return of Bunjee." None of those involve a doll or record collection.
That puppet is wack. I liked the animated O.G. Reamore.

I think I read the book, but I only vaguely remember it.
But I remember the commercials as though they were yesterday. (I think I still have my Two-Bad action figure in storage somewhere.)
And Vincent Price is awesome!

I have a VHS copy of the special which I converted to DVD, but Im somewhat unsure about uploading it due to copyright issues.
Anyway, I have seen Scruffy, and it's a very touching animated special.
