@Xenoka911 Yeah, Dave Murray is clearly an incompetent drummer, as is evident by all his studio and live performances available for comparison. I've played shows like that in little radio stations. You're cramped, rushed, it's 6:20 am, and you just played to 1000 people the night before til 4am.... They're allowed to be a little less than perfect once in a while.

this is great, and great fucking band too. But why exactly is the upright player so lazy? he has tape on notes to play in tune and plays with terrible finger style.
Tim was at this time the only musician in the band that was not a music scholar. He was self-taught and was primarily an electric bass guitarist(as well as a fancier of MIDI). At this stage,he had probably only been playing upright for a few years. But, it is obvious that he knows exactly what he is doing, even at this early stage of his transition,BTW, what do you mean by "tape"? I don't see any tape strips on the neck, only regular dot markers on the binding(where the 3rd & 5th fret would lie).
Furthermore, Tim hardly even looks at his bass the entire duration of the song. He only makes a few glances in order to assure that he is in correct position. Otherwise, his eyes are on the sheets.
@jaffijoe i think hes an awesome bass player and everything too, just one thing, there are no regular dots on double basses. well theres none on mine or any that ive seen or played
Was this recorded in UCSD? If so, I remember this. My buddy Pete was head of the music department there and he recorded them in this studio. I happen to be one of the lucky few who have this whole set and interview on cassette :) They even did the Contra theme too. Man, the memories. I really do miss their older style and vibe.
This isn't Koji Kondo's music, it's Akito Nakatsuka the composer.

It seems like the drummer is a little off at points, and he also has terrible technique. anyone else notice that?

I dunno, look for GrooveTV's 20+ minute Estradashere "Hunger Strike" @ Kuumbwa on YouTube...
check the bass solo at 7:43
he's not classically trained or anything but i think he's pretty shredding

Not sure about the tape, but his finger style is actually pretty common in Gypsy Swing style bass players and Rockabilly bassists.
Not all upright players use the standard fingerstyle.
He's a good player regardless. Who cares about proper technique if the job still gets done right??
