I think she is trying to imitate those off-beat cowbell-like sounds that appear in the original recording. Take a listen to that and you will see. It's the same four percussion beats that you hear right before the drums start and in the bridge after the first chorus (again in the original track). All in all, I'm with you: her attempt was annoying.

Although in the original video she appears also to be the one making those sounds after the first chorus... Funny. I always thought it was a cowbell played off beat.
