Lol, first of all the director Bekmambetov is half Asian himself ( his father is Kazakh - as the guy palying Tamerlan). And the second about 10% of Russian citezens are either asian. More than that, Mongolian conquest affected Russian history a lot.

It's Tamerlan's army. In the beginning of the movie he's fighting for the chalk of destiny (a magical artifact) to rewrite history in his favor. And in the present the main character of the movie is searching for it to do the same
