JayDeeSG. I'm not so sure that's accurate about John Diggins making the pickups. I'd be pretty sure that John Birch made the pickups. Why, well, the test bed for the ORIGINAL John Birch Pickups was my Fender 1000, and the year John and I made the prototypes was 1965. John Diggings may well have wired up the John Birch guitars, and probably worked as a luthier on the bodies, but the encapsulating in epoxy resin and encasing in a stainless case was an Idea that John Birch and I implemented in 1965
I myself persuaded John Birch to leave his job at Ampex as a field service engineer and pursue customised pickup installation and eventually guitar manufacture.
The original concept of Stereo Wiring was because of the requirements of the record contact I had with EMI, the steel guitar was to be recorded in stereo at the Abbey Road Studios and released on their premier label "Studio Two Stereo" the first album release date (1967) pre-dates John Diggins' association with John Birch Guitars.
You'll find a bit more about my friend John Birch's association with my music by going to my web site and reading notes of Castaways Live Vol.1+2
John Birch was a fan of our band, an Hawaiian Record collector and Hawaiian Guitar enthusiast/player. I still have his Album/Cine/Tape collection, passed on to me when John so tragically died.
33 Innage Rd Northfield was his home, and many days and nights were spent there with us winding coils and testing magnets etc, (always tea supplied by Joyce.)
@basilhenriques That's a wealth of information. I only know what I hear so my information is not first hand. Regardless, the pickups Jaydee created for my guitars are phenomenal, as I'm sure the Birch models are as well. Both creators are masters at their art. Thanks for the kind compliments too.
How are the pickups wired in your guitar ? does John use 250k or 500k pots ? I just ordered a pair of his "old boy" pickups but have no idea how i would wire it lol well i do but I wonder what kinda potentiometers he uses for these pickups. I'll have to ask him
@Terrible1 Not sure dude? I'm not that technical...After knowing that my bridge is a 24K and Neck 9K ohm...I'm lost, LOL. I'm sure John will give you all the instructions you could ever need on them. I own two Jaydee guitars now and love working with John on the build every time, good luck!
i would sell my gibson sg tony iommi just to have a jaydee. its my dream guitar. i could sell it on ebay and probably make a good 2G on it but id need another and it would take a yr for me to get it. ugh such a nice guitar though. i wish you well with it! Ill get one eventually. Good sound too!
Oddly enough when Jaydee was building my Les Paul he told me he had just finished up building Tony another SG. He said Tony contacted him and wanted an SG built to replicate his own "Old boy"...
He told Jaydee to drag it around the shop and make it look old as part of his instructions. I thought that was cool that Tony came back for another Jaydee when he is endorsed by Gibson and could have any guitar in the world. That shows you the quailty of the Jaydee's.
John Diggins (Jaydee) worked for John Birch in the 70's. He built the "old boy". He gave me the specs of the original pickup covers. John Diggins will build you exatcly what you want. I just got my second Jaydee custom, I had him build me a Les Paul style guitar with Split Block inlays, flamed maple top and of-course pickups to my specs, this time with smooth crome covers like Iommi's Gibson PAF's
GREAT tone. I would love to see you take us through those John Birch style pickups... especially hearing how they clean up when the volume is rolled off, and how they respond to the throttle opening up.
YES!!! That's amazing! I was going to enter but after all these great entries, including this one. I've decided not to. Man you monkey minions can shred!
probably one of the better videos i've seen/heard in this contest. great melody and note choices. you keep it clean and simple, which is a good thing. :) good luck, bro.
Very good playing and very good guitar man! Can you play 60's 70's blues & old rock songs with this guitar?

Sincere apologies for the topic drift Anthony, but I thought it prudent to correct the assumption.
For further confirmation check out the "Wikipedia" page on John Birch..
BTW your technique and sound is just amazing.

Bello again Anthony :)
Is your neck pick up a biflux or hyperflux by John Birch?
On the JD page specs of the Old Boy says it's an hyperflux...
Though watching Tony's neck pickup I read Biflux by John Birch.
So is it an error on the typing cover of the pick up or does Tony use a Biflux instead as anyone knows, the Hyperflux ?
Thanx!

What about the bridge on the old boy guitar?
Is that a kahler ?
muaythai4lifelife 2 years ago
Schaller w/ fine tuners. Jaydee installs this bridge as standard on the Iommi custom shop SG
JayDeeSG 2 years ago
Thank you so much !
My dream would be to get a new black or red sg, a copy of the real old boy ( not cooked inside the car ) ;)
Unfortunately at this time I could't order this guitar - I already spent so much $ in guitars though :)

:) i'm glad to read this :P
depending on the price... in the future i'd buy one.
maybe selling some gear before.
i already spent so much for my esp kh2 :)
muaythai4lifelife 2 years ago
Hi there. Great stuff in here ;)
Pick ups and bridge are straight from jaydee's or you asked them to use your specs??
I checked their page and the Iommi seems has different bridge and pick up.
Thanx!
muaythai4lifelife 2 years ago
I spec'd the pick-up windings myself. The covers are replicas of the first Iommi models on the "old boy".
Thanks!
JayDeeSG 2 years ago
and where did you find them ? :)
i wrote both Jaydee and John Birch to have infos and price list for a "old boy " left handed version...
but not for the actual Iommi sig as yours, i'd like to make build a gibson sg shape..
aka .. the Old boy ;)
24 frets, cross inlays, with iommi pick ups or john birch ones like yours.. and for the bridge - a old boy brigde ( is that a kahler??? ).
by the way, i'll order one when i'm rich :)
