Incorrect. Clapton was a very famous player with a big following when Hendrix showed up in London as a total unknown. Clapton came *before* Hendrix, by years. Players like Clapton, Pete Townshend, and Andy Summers helped Hendrix get established in London as he was figuring it all out and putting a band together. Hendrix was huge in England before anybody in the US even heard of him. He hadn't even seen a Marshall amp until Townshend and Clapton turned him onto it. Learn your history, young-un.
Clapton / Townshend / Beck coming before Hendrix do not dispel the fact that the major modern rock concepts on tone, volume, pyrotechnics are Hendrix. He took their elements to the level that eddie is starting from.

I would not put Eddie in the elite guitarist category with players like Satriani , Vai, or Gilbert who focus too much on music theory and not the guitar. No one matches Ed's dedication to the instrument and no one makes it look as easy and fun as he did. That's what makes him a legend.
EVH is a legend, but you can't say people like Steve Vai aren't dedicated to guitar, Steve Vai is just insane, its like he flows into his guitar and it talks for him.
spanish fly is eruption 2, then there is cathedral which is another amaizing technique (i dont think ed invented it) but heaps of the later van halen solos are different to the early ones
It would be easy for Eddie to noodle around more, however when the masses come to see the show they want to hear what they cherished so much from the past.
Its stupid to compare EVH to Steve Vai, both are unique talents in their own right. Eddie is the most influential guitarist of his genre, he paved the way for the likes of Vai and Satriani to take guitar playing to new heights. For me, Eddie will always be No 1.
hey nms, how can dave be a higher respected musician since he bailed from vh to be a movie star.star is the key word. ed said he is amusician, not a star.ed let dlr back in.

All 3 versions of van halen are great .I hope they do a tour with all 3 singers, and michael anthony, so everyone will be happy and all the wiiiining stops .ROCK ON MIGHTY VAN HALEN..from Hank in Miami..
Vai and Satriani are the offspring of a one night stand in Reno involving Van-Halen's guitar drunk on a flanger and a gay Wizard. In the past 15-20 years Eddie got too focused on the "brown sound" and forgot to do what he does best with the guitar- have fun. I saw the show in NY in Nov and it was a Van Halen that hasn't been heard in a long time. It was Awesome.
Who do you think Vai and Satch learned 1/2 of their technique from? Van Halen's influence is all over Satch's music. I love Satch, not so much Vai but they both borrowed from him.
eruption is just a sliver of his playing his ryth playing was awesome and overlooked but the guitar solos in just about everyone of the DLR era songs was groundbreaking forget eruption listen to the rest of what he did..
I respectfully disagree. I believe Via is a much more experimental player than Ed. Ed's whole thing is tapping, divebombs and a very percussive style. His influence was Hendrix-like back in 1976, but things have moved on. If you listen to Jeff Beck back in the 60's you hear where Ed got much of his style.
Ed was the best about 20-30 years ago, but you now have a whole host players today who are better. Paul Gilbert, George Lynch, Steve Lukather and Neal Schon to name a few.
edward never really like hendrix. no offense but people like hendrix because he is overrated. the guy flipped a right handed guitar strings backwards so he could play left handed. :o bet ed couldnt do that.
I seriously suggest going through Van Halen's entire catalogue and listening to the songs. You can ignore all of the solos. It's what Eddie does before and after the solos in the songs; the technical fills. He manages to make it sound like they had two guitarists back then.
Wonder why VH was not performing on the American Music Awards last night? VERY STRANGE THAT THE BIGGEST BADDEST REUNION TOUR...THE MIGHTY VAN HALEN EITHER DECLINED THE INVITE OR was not INVITED???
Its thrue that E.V.A. always does the same solos over and over, add some new riffs less tecknical but more harmonious, more from the heart than for the show off.

Every Eddie solo clip I watch / listen to, is exactly the same note for note from every single show. Same solo actually from 1984. It's still good, but damn, learn a new riff or 2 would ya Ed?
you say that !!! but if it was'ent for players like eddie van fucken halen who set the limits for guitar playing which is no limits !!! and for your info BUD our guitar players of today would'ent be pushing the boundreys if eddie did'ent show them what to do with that six string thing that we the guitar just a little food for thought
When I see things like this I know it was a blessing that Hendrix died. See, if Eddie had died after his 3rd record, everyone would be wondering what he would be doing if he was alive today, instead of lamenting at how terrible he plays these days.
So if I understand Fundy here,he is saying that Eddie needs to take a vacation and come back with something original....So should Clapton do the same thing? Or I think Zeppelin...or at least Page/Plant are doing something....I hope they have some new techno out.Give me a break!
i would have liked to see eddie take a good enough vacation where he could be inspired to outhink his 20 plus year guitar box and come back and reestablish his gift.
dave is a disastor. no class. no respect for the audience, horrible singing now.
too bad.

well, maybe the stress of being on the road, year after each year- 6 straight platinum albums in a row, took its toll. whats the quickest way to get out of a contract? back then, every band i know of, put out a new album once evry 2 years.

i'm a huge VH fan but what i want is a new album. they have what?, 4 albums of new material they have been working on for the last? 3 years?? is ted templeton still around?

no shit, go fuck yourself. it was really that simple, why the fuck would he play it? ya, i can tap on the guitar, but hes just so smooth, hes perfected it, he really paved the way for tapping.
Its funny how everyone misses Mike - I don't recall anyone screaming his name at any concert - just EDDIE EDDIE EDDIE - the poor guy always looked like the forgotten one - Mike's doing fine jamming with Sammy and he ain't crying - as far as Wolfie - he's playing just fine too and get off the fat jokes - they are old and tired - stop being jealous
it's rehearsal... there is a relearning....and what so many think is so easy...well it's not.... Shows are not just getting together and playing songs...it's work. It will come together...
Eddie still delivers - looks and sounds better than he has in decades - I think he's hit his second wind. \m/ \m/ Can't believe Dave still has those pipes - most rock singers on comeback tours are singing an octave down ;) I wonder if Geoff Tate still can get up there.
Just O.K. . I'll be seeing them in 2 weeks and hope EVH is better than this . Both times I've seen EVH he has been boring as far as solos . Better live solos I've seen : Zakk , Frank Marino , Gilmour , Vai , Page , Chan Kinchla , Iommi , Tipton , Winter . Still lookin' forward to it .
I'm suprised that Eddie is still jumping onstage considering the fact he had hip-replacement surgery. He's got new teeth and just as skinny as he was back in the '70's.
I do wish that MA was in and Wolfie was out. Would have been SO much better IMO. However, I just hope this leads to a new studio album/NEW MUSIC!! Because all I really want to hear is Eddie's kick ass song writing again! The same old live solo shit is old. I WANT NEW VH MUSIC!!!
his playing is pretty crisp considering he's blown half his brain cells on coke, booze, and whores. he is the king of rock stars, after all. bravo on an amazing life, ed. i don't know if any of you have seen ed's "frankenstein" interview on here", but they guy's completely lost his marbles. the only way they're writing new material is if sammy sobers up long enough from selling cabowabotequila to sit down and write them. not bloddy likely, mate.
Definitely NOT amazing. This is a fraction of what eddie used to be able to do. I think it's great that they are out on tour, but I also feel a little sad when I see such an icon not at the top of his game anymore.
Eddie did some great work but this isn't it. Can it be that a player this talented and capable has run out of things to say and can only go on autopilot and hit the repeat button? He's playing like he's getting paid per note. If he has anything original & innovative left, I hope he lets it out, I'm sure it'd be amazing.
Um yeah, 'cause it's who they are and what they do. I heard close to 20 years of -not- Van Halen (keyboards? Sammy Hagar?) -THIS- is Van Halen, got it?
Oh, they definately made a difference mr "andyvastola". You know it...and it makes you mad!!!! All you people who bust on the fact that its not a reunion tour can shut up. They said themselves at the press conference that it wasnt a reunion, it was a NEW band.....let it go naysayers, there back and there aint nothing you can do about it!!!
"reunion?" isn't anyone wondering why they just straight up dissed Michael Anthony and didn't even ask him to play bass on this "reunion" tour? What a bunch of assholes. This band never made a difference.
I love EVH but it's true he hasn't progressed much... it is the same solo he's done for years... he's a very wealthy rock star who is no longer hungry... and the aggression is gone... still a giant though.. albiet a sleeping one..
Just got back from opening night here in Charlotte, other than minor feedback issues that I'm sure will be taken care of I thought they sounded great. Wolfgang was also pretty impressive in his debut.
Anyone who would rip on eddie is comprised of 100% pure ignorance.
Everyone has opinions on who's good and bad, but anyone willing to rip on him obviously knows NOTHING about creativity or his influence on today's guitar playing.
I love Eddie's playing...always have but it's the same solo over and over. I know he has to play eruption but I wish he would come up with something new.
Frater8....you suck. The guy is a genius and brought his tapping style and whammy bar dives to the front of guitar playing. The 1980's were all about being like him. Granted he wasn't the first to tap. He made just made it soooo gooood.
Wonderful

Observation: in all these video's I've yet to see the Frankenstein Replica that
Eddie was so amazed with. As well, I understand wanting to keep it in the

Wolfgang. He may be able play the parts but there's a lot to be said about
appearance. This has nothing to do with his weight, it's just that he looks
awkward and out of place.

no shit, go fuck yourself. it was really that simple, why the fuck would he play it? ya, i can tap on the guitar, but hes just so smooth, hes perfected it, he really paved the way for tapping.

Its funny how everyone misses Mike - I don't recall anyone screaming his name at any concert - just EDDIE EDDIE EDDIE - the poor guy always looked like the forgotten one - Mike's doing fine jamming with Sammy and he ain't crying - as far as Wolfie - he's playing just fine too and get off the fat jokes - they are old and tired - stop being jealous

they have been rehearsing for a year.....

He's been playing this same fuckin solo since the world was flat!!
Can this shit head please evolve???
mlmr11 4 years ago
hahahah thats true i hate to say, maybe some new songs would be cool or even better a new solo lol!
zappaelcrappa 4 years ago
Get the kid back in school. Mike was the core of this group. They will last 1 summer. Watch.
Maxwell2323 4 years ago
Oh yeah I said it earlier...
There is no Zeppelin without John Paul Jones and there is no Van Halen without Michael Anthony.
Once again Van Halen pisses in our face and calls it Lemonade

The magic is gone sad to say, but EVH tone is better than ever. How ironic !
zappaelcrappa 4 years ago
it's rehearsal... there is a relearning....and what so many think is so easy...well it's not.... Shows are not just getting together and playing songs...it's work. It will come together...

Does anyone know what bass Wolfgang is playing? Is he keeping it oldschool VH with the P-bass?

Eddie still delivers - looks and sounds better than he has in decades - I think he's hit his second wind. \m/ \m/ Can't believe Dave still has those pipes - most rock singers on comeback tours are singing an octave down ;) I wonder if Geoff Tate still can get up there.
rlholo 4 years ago
some dont. james hetfield is still singing as good as he did. he cant get his voice as rough as before, but still sounds good.
bryce123193 4 years ago
Just O.K.
AngusShanks 4 years ago
I'm suprised that Eddie is still jumping onstage considering the fact he had hip-replacement surgery. He's got new teeth and just as skinny as he was back in the '70's.
He looks great.

Its called classic- people.. I know we've heard it b4, but Im just glad to hear them back together again...
ranger0262 4 years ago
Yes very cool but same old same old. I konw he can come up with some new solo shit. I've heard all that stuff a million times. Boring!!
peanutavalon 4 years ago
I do wish that MA was in and Wolfie was out. Would have been SO much better IMO. However, I just hope this leads to a new studio album/NEW MUSIC!! Because all I really want to hear is Eddie's kick ass song writing again! The same old live solo shit is old. I WANT NEW VH MUSIC!!!
dajzilla 4 years ago
his playing is pretty crisp considering he's blown half his brain cells on coke, booze, and whores. he is the king of rock stars, after all. bravo on an amazing life, ed. i don't know if any of you have seen ed's "frankenstein" interview on here", but they guy's completely lost his marbles. the only way they're writing new material is if sammy sobers up long enough from selling cabowabotequila to sit down and write them. not bloddy likely, mate.
RRaceRB19 4 years ago
Definitely NOT amazing. This is a fraction of what eddie used to be able to do. I think it's great that they are out on tour, but I also feel a little sad when I see such an icon not at the top of his game anymore.
johnnycat65 4 years ago
Eddie did some great work but this isn't it. Can it be that a player this talented and capable has run out of things to say and can only go on autopilot and hit the repeat button? He's playing like he's getting paid per note. If he has anything original & innovative left, I hope he lets it out, I'm sure it'd be amazing.
sloiselle1 4 years ago
jesus, it's like hearing the same songs again for the 5000th time, the same solo, same shit eating grin, same old, same old, same old.
RRaceRB19 4 years ago
Um yeah, 'cause it's who they are and what they do. I heard close to 20 years of -not- Van Halen (keyboards? Sammy Hagar?) -THIS- is Van Halen, got it?

Oh, they definately made a difference mr "andyvastola". You know it...and it makes you mad!!!! All you people who bust on the fact that its not a reunion tour can shut up. They said themselves at the press conference that it wasnt a reunion, it was a NEW band.....let it go naysayers, there back and there aint nothing you can do about it!!!
netofgems 4 years ago
"reunion?" isn't anyone wondering why they just straight up dissed Michael Anthony and didn't even ask him to play bass on this "reunion" tour? What a bunch of assholes. This band never made a difference.

I love EVH but it's true he hasn't progressed much... it is the same solo he's done for years... he's a very wealthy rock star who is no longer hungry... and the aggression is gone... still a giant though.. albiet a sleeping one..

Plenty of tix left for Sammy at 800 seater Lakewood movie hall in Dallas!
Catch Sammy Hagar and the Wabos, with special guest Mike Anthony at a movie theater, High School Gymnasium or Church Carnival near you this Winter!

I know he has to play eruption but I wish he would come up with something new.

better than most people. but not like he was in that 5150 concert video of theirs. the speed just isn't there.

Frater8....you suck. The guy is a genius and brought his tapping style and whammy bar dives to the front of guitar playing. The 1980's were all about being like him. Granted he wasn't the first to tap. He made just made it soooo gooood.
