Probably the best version I heard so far, including studio version. Plants voice is still higher here and the guitar riff in the beginning... musical orgasm.
Raiden: Chris Cornell? Really? I'd use him as a textbook example of a singer who's range has slipped. Nothing against the guy, he's an amazing singer, but he isn't doing what he used to.
This is back when Plant would still sing the chorus in the proper octave. When you listen to other live recording, even as early as 1973, he sings the chorus in a lower register... and it's disappointing. Thanks for posting this version!
@tabermark Yeah but it's not surprising with the amount of touring they did in 1969-1972. Singing in such a powerful voice is bound to push your vocal chords to the limit. I agree it's disappointing listening to later live performances, but I least we have a live album from their golden year (IMO).
This is ridiculous. This band is so goddamn tight and loose all at the same time. Jimmy, JPJ and Bonzo take you on a journey of folk, hard rock, and funk all at the same time. Plant is singing high notes that a 12 year old girl singing through her nose couldn't hit AND HE IS PROJECTING REAL CHEST VOICE VOLUME AND CONTROL.
God, Robert had the voice of God in the old days. It's a shame that didn't treat it properly. You can listen to guys like Chris Cornell who have kept their range for decades because they took care of themselves.
Very cool. What did Robert say the lyrics were? I can never understand him really when he speaks. He's great, but I'm always like, "What is he talking about?" :)
@POOPOOSOLDIER io think his voice was never the same after 1972....it was still beatifull, but not the same...he is and will be the greatest singer of all times...i studied his voice for a long time, and how it changed....he is the greatest life influence to me
@toxigef i heard that he lost his voice or something like that in 1972, do you know if this is true? because i always thought that was the reason for him always playing it safe live in the later years
@persbol i've heard and read stories about his voice..lots of them..by one of them, which is for me the strongest truth,he smoked a lot and drank, and used marijuana in the early days.so his voice started to be thin, and he had a surgery in the mid '70 s.by other stories he used a lot of chest notes, which are very destructible for voice, and he hadn't trained voice reguraly.but he smoked, and i dont know if he is still smoking.his voce, around 1970.began to change, and thats it..he knows why i guess :)

@17ledzeppelin The heavy part of the song from this night is from this night. The mellow opening and closing is from the next date in Long Beach.

@TheDrummerTy
I went ahead and double checked. You should be able to find Heartbreaker in the playlist.

@Grubbsy Totally my fault, well youtube's fault, typed in 1972-06-25 in the search and it thought it was a duplicate of other videos.

just get the How the West Was Won CD - much better quality, and yes, rober hits all the high notes, cuz it was 1972

One of the great musical tragedies is that Plant lost his voice after this year.

I concur, he's rather obscure when making references most of the time. :p
Grubbsy 1 year ago
@HuntersMoon73 I think Robert Goes, 'the lyrics on that one were a bit, eeee"
xD I don't know what that means either. He always is sketchy when it comes to changing songs, but he is Robert Plant, and we all love him still :)
