  • @bobpiquette Thank you Bob :)

  • I slowly become an expert in Irish songs (I am Dutch). I have just listen to the version of May Black. You are doing a fine job, nice voice but the mix is not so top (your voice is too loud and may be a little echo on it), still love your version too.

  • @JanMelet Thank you for your kind words and input. I look forward to hearing your channel! Music is wonderful isn't it!!!

  • The poem was written by Patrick Kavanagh and not WB Yeats. He wrote it in honour of Hilda Moriarty. She was a 22-year-old medical student at University College Dublin. Kavanagh, who was 20 years older, became obsessed with Hilda Moriarty. His love was unrequited and she later married Donogh O'Malley who became the Minister for Education in the Irish Governement.

  • @Vince1303 Thank you Vince! So my previous research was correct. Very interesting info. Have an amazing day!

  • i think you do a great job! comes from the heart!

  • @toriphile1989 Thank you! I do feel this song deeply.

  • Raglan Road was wrote by W.B Yeats not Patrick Kavanagh

  • @InchPeirDivingCrew Really! I researched it on the net and Kavanagh was who I found - Thank you for the clarification!

  • Good Lord! We should Practise at your house!!!!!!!

  • i love this song ,, but i dont like the way you sing it im sorry buh i sing it much slower ,, maybe thats jus your style jus sayinn ! :)

  • @ciaram9594 Thank you for your comment - it is true artists sing how they feel and the different styles is what makes it all interesting.

  • lovely

  • @madfortrad5958 Thank you!

  • One of my favourite songs really nice .

  • @rapala55 I am so glad you like it! It means allot when it is someones favorite song:)

  • Changing the lyrics to fit the gender of the singer is common in Celtic folk.

Robert Burns changed the lyrics and adapted the music all the time. So don't worry about it. Good effort - how about trying some songs of the modern Cetlic Bard - Dougie MacLean?

  • @flyfifer51 Thank you for your input. I always feel that I cannot really feel the song if I am singing it to a women. Just me:) I will look up Dougie MacLean for sure - thanx

  • Thanx for you comments Jimreihill. The story will certainly help when I redo the song:)

  • This is one of the most beautiful love songs ever written. I sing with a trad outfit in london and I love singing it .

Patrick kavanagh wrote it for his girlfriend at the time. The angel gives the girl every thing a human could ask for and even gives up his wings. Slow down and put yourself in his place. Imagine you gave your all to some one who you thought felt same but they walked away. Then sit down and tell a complete stranger your story.

  • @jimreihill I love this kind of input - thank you!

  • fuk thats brutal

  • nice try but kavanagh asked luke to sing it so he is still the best

  • Thnx for the comment ashfly. I am just sing this song because I find it moving - certainly not in competition to luke.

  • there is only one person who can sing this song. LUKE KELLY.

Its being sung way to fast.

  • Yes I have been told it was sang to fast - I may try it slower and with original words in the future

    Regards Belinda

  • please see Your YouTube Post box for more information

  • excellent performance, accustically and optically. Very nice Your gently appearance and that You bought this celtic dress. Is this now Your slower version? I think You shouldn´t play slower. I like this flow in Your guitar play. I l´d be very proud, if I could prepare people a joy like you do with this performance. (please excuse me for my mistakes)

  • Hello??? We're here in camera one! :O)

    Nice Guitar!

  • Oh yessss I see you now - LOL! Glad you liked the guitar :)

  • brilliant gutair playing but not sure about the song..yah need the irish accent =]..sean nos singing!...

  • Thnx for the input - I had never heard of sean nos singing - I looked it up and an quite entrigued. I dont claim to be good at an irish accend I just hope that people can appreciate a Canadian trying to share in your tradition :)

  • I guess this lady comes from the old world and does an excellent job. This should be enough. She doesn´t need a red beard. (sorry for my mistakes)

  • very nice job.well done

  • Thnx so much - glad you enjoyed it

  • Good on ya girl , I enjoyed listening to you..thank you

  • Thnxxx for listening :)

  • this is bad, to much of a bob dylan influence

  • You have a lovely voice suited to folk songs but in my opinion you have kind of ruined this song. This is a traditional irish song and you've made it "too folky" and taken away from the meaning of the song if you know what I mean. I'm sorry and I don't mean to insult you - just giving my honest opinion!. See Luke Kelly's version - simply amazing and how the song is meant to be sung.

  • Yes I have had feedback that I need to sing it slower - at some point I will record it again - but I guess we will never please everyone. Thnx for listening anyway

  • And yes, I'm know I'll get flamed by all your folks hardcore out there! Hell, I'm on the folk song "Wanted dead or alive" list as we speak but I prefer to be frank than to pretend and lie (not saying you guys are lying just that many do so not to hurt people's feeling).

Please reassure me that's not a plastic plant!

    hehe

  • Yep we have that poster up in my town LOL....and nope not a plastic plant....hope that is a bit of a relief to you :)

  • A little busy in the back, drum set right next to the plant which I hope isn't a plastic plant, I'd be very disappointed otherwise bead!

Did I ever mention you are very pretty? ;]

Ok the outfit works well, just don't cook with it, long sleeve=dangerous!

The song, again, my main problem I'm not really into folk songs, they do have deep meaning but are poor on harmonic diversity, 1 voice 1 guitar, that's it that's all.

  • Its a really different version to what Im used to. The main point of the song is that melody and air should be the same as 'the dawning of the day' and I don think that it is a "drone" it sets subject matter of the song nicely

  • Well I liked it just the way it is! Too many people sound really drone-y; this is quite a reasonable speed. After all you don't want to sound like everyone else, do you? This is fresh and above all YOU!

I've enjoyed playing along with you; wish you lived in Australia we could have some good sessions.

    Lovely voice, guitar and DRESS!

    More please..........

  • Thnx for your comment - I agree with you one has to make the song their own and it is a veryyy long song so slow would really drag it out I think. Would love to have a music session with you - who knows...anything is possible :)

  • Well, if ever you come to Canberra, Australia, please get in touch! If you don't mind playing with a 63 year old-enough-to-be-a-grandmother piano/harp/accordion/bandura/autoharp/dulcimer player piano teacher that is!

You would certainly go down very well in our folk clubs, etc.

  • you have sort off gone all country on us if you play it trad we would get along fine yer talented no doubt, but a fine entry anyhoo

  • Hi - I enjoyed this; you sing with great passion and feeling. I agree with the previous comment that the song Nancy Spain would suit your voice.

  • Hi there

Steve from Belast here. I'm so glad ye found, love and and enjoy this track....but serious hun. Slowly does it. Sing it like....your in love/ you dad just died. Serious. Go 1/2 speed and ye got a hit. :o)

  • Very good.

A little bit slower would be more suited though.

    Keep up the good work

  • You are so brilliant, I love the dress the playing and singing the whole thing. It's really great - well done.

  • I agree its a bit fast but its still good.

With your voice maybe you should give "nancy spain" a try?

  • Thnx :) I will check into 'Nancy Spain' I love song suggestions - one gets exposed to so many beautiful creations.

  • Hi - you sing and play beautifully.

This from a fellow folk singer, and with rgeat respect - too fast and you get "the Ballad of William Bloat" - a great song, but not in the same league as "Raglan Road"

  • Thnx so much - great to meet another folk singer! I will check out your site and will check into the tune you mentioned. Best regards

  • eh i dnt no far too fast but good singing

  • that is the consensus that it is to fast...I will re-record it slower and see how that goes. Thnx for the input! have a great weekend

  • Hi Beadazzle10,you have a nice voice and play the guitar very well but I have to agree with the comments that its a little fast and that the poem/song loses its context when you sing of "him" instead of her... perhaps you would try again and post as I would be interested to hear you sing it as it should be sung. Best regards.

  • I will give it a try soon...thnx for your kind words:)

  • I look forward to it... good luck!

  • too fast and by just changing her to him the context of the poem is lost!! theres nothing wrong with you singing this as a woman !! if you were reciting the poem you wouldnt change it _-would you?

  • Funny. I disagree. I was looking for a female version of this song that changes the context to a man. I find it creepy personally when a woman sings it about a woman, and I LOVE this song, and I think a lot of women can relate to it. It is too fast/upbeat sounding though, for such a sad song. :O) Finn's Fury (a Celtic PUNK band) :) does the most BEAUTIFUL version of this song, IMO. See their MySpace for same.

  • It does feel strange to me to sing to a woman so I always change the gender - then I can feel the song. I definately will slow it down - I can see your point. Thnx for the link and input!

  • If you introduce a song as "traditional" and with"beautiful words" then you should not go and change them.

The whole point of this song is to understand the author Patrick Kavanagh.

You can read a good background on the song on the enty of another Youtube contributor - celtic mist .

My view is arrange the melody what ever way you want but leave the words alone.

    Patrick Kavanagh was not gay

    Regards

    Bill

  • Last note.... sorry I meant Gaelic Mist

    Bill

  • Thnx for your input Bill - when I sing I feel the song and I find it difficult to sing such words to a woman. Because I am not gay:)

    Your view is duely note.

    best regards - Belinda
