A luscious performance. Do you have the totally lascivious scene where eats a pear like a pear's never been eaten? And is it just me, or did his and Mick Jager's ancestors come from the same village?
this was one of my favorites. I was a kid when I saw this film and i never forgot it. I remember a woman singing a song entitled. "Love is like music, beautiful music to my heart"?would love to see the whole film just once more, i'm sure i"m not alone.
Back when I was a kid in the 50's, I saw this movie several times on TV. I loved watching it, as it always gave me the creeps! This is the first time I have seen anything at all about the film in probably 50 years. The only other Karloff movie that gave me the creeps like that was The Black Cat. Karloff at his best. The scariest things are those that are never seen, only implied. After Gregor dropped the trap door on Anton in the pit, lying there mortally wounded...yikes!
I recently saw this movie for the first time. Amazing is all I can say. Karloff was pure genius...he was totally believable as both the evil twin and the good twin. His portrayal of the evil twin masquerading as the good twin was brilliant. Why do today's film-makers not seem to understand that innuendo is far eerier than special effects? (The Haunting and its remake exemplifies what I'm saying). Only a talented director can pull this off which is why we see so little of it these days.
I think they are simply hoping to cash in on the success of the original. If you liked it the first time you'll probably want to see what they do with it. But you are correct, they never can surpass the spark of the original, no matter how much glitz they put into it. It's really just a money grab as far as I'm concerned....similar to authors who just take one successful story and re-write it under different settings with different characters with the theme repeated over and over. Cha-ching!
@hardtimesincountry Yes, that's what I'm saying...the origininal "Haunting" was far superior to its remake despite the fact that the remake had big-budget special effects. There was simply no way to improve on the original.
@JanBee1122 I agree completely. The original THE HAUNTING was far more chilling than the remake. Special effects and computer animation don't impress me at all. Innuendo and suggestion is what's truly scary. Horror Hotel (1960) is another great example of this. Atmosphere is more important than anything.
Thank you for posting this! I saw THE BLACK ROOM for the first time many, years ago, and it has remained my favourite movie of Mr. Karloff's. Sadly, it is rarely shown.

Well, I never saw a remake beat the original. I wonder why they bother. They even managed to ruin The Italian Job!!!
