If you want to defeat a UFC champion or a Karate master, buy a gun. If you want to learn how to fight in a ring, learn MMA. If you want to learn how to be more human and explore your potential, try a traditional budo free from competition. All this arguing is a waste of time.
It does matter what you learn, but only in relation to what you wish to achieve.
.. Have a kata guy compete a contest guy in the ring, yes the kata guy might not have an advantage. But if a contest guy picks a fight with a kata guy on the street, you'd be sure the kata guy will be able to easily defeat the contest fighter.
However. Any person graded 1st dan in any karatesystem do know the power of the skills they have and the damage they can apply to another human being. Therefore:
Do not strike others, do not be struck by others, the principle is peace without incident.
I notice when-ever someone puts down anothers way, they always looks stupid.
Even in this movie.
They said that he doesn't like the sporting way because you can't strike properly and pull your punch. And now a few minutes later here he is pulling all of his strikes for practice. So he does the same thing as those in sport.
Never put down a technique it is always useful for something and you will end up looking foolish.
@RicRagsLive So you think he shouldn't pull an eye strike for training purposes or he is some kind of hypocrite? What idiocy. His criticism of sport karate is that it doesn't use a full range of technique and promotes 'winners' within unrealistic sets of rules, often narrowing the range of karate learned around the world. I have trained under Higaonna Shihan and found him far from foolish. I cannot say the same for your post.
@darrenlad Sorry but he said that every blow has to be done at full speed and power, then 2 minutes later he is pulling his blows. Has nothing to do with what I believe. I think the guy is amazing. But I recognize when someones ideal done not align with their practice. It's impossible to always have your blows be 100% And sport does help a person become better at fighting. have someone who only does Katas fight a person who competes in sport and watch the kata person get destroyed.
@RicRagsLive You are simply wrong on both counts, he is (obviously) referring to pulling blows in contest NOT to pulling blows in training, and anyone with half a brain can see that. Also it does not follow that a competition fighter (especially one who trains in points fighting) automatically beats someone who trains hard in kata, the kata are filled with techniques you banned in contests. Your comments simply prove that you don't really know a lot about the martial arts.
@RicRagsLive He is speaking in badly translated Okinawan Japanese, I am fully aware of what he said and what he meant. It is obvious that he is referring to contest and not training, who would suggest that you hit people with full contact eye strikes during training? I am not going to continue this exchange with you as I can't bring myself to enter into a battle of wits with someone who is so obviously unarmed.
I can why Bill Duff from Human Weapon called him "The Rocky of Okinawa." Its is really amazing to see the dedication he puts into his training and teaching.
this was really nice to watch, thanks for upload it. I practice Shaolin Kung Fu, but this was very interesting. By the way, both Kung Fu and Karate follows the Way of Budo (o Da Mo in China)
Doesn't matter what you learn, it's all within oneself and if you stick one way that's fine as long as you train hard in it. What I do is constantly evolving and working on Martial technique or concepts, But there is no lower or higher way of fighting. As long as the techniques are trained to a practical and efficient standard it is good.
I agree with you there, like having your partner resist, and sparring are one of the best ways to practice your techniques. I need to practice harder!!!!
@modernmartialartist It depends on the person too. Certain styles are best suited for certain people. Like for me, I took Tae-Kwon-Do for a number of years but it wasn't for me because it is heavily dependent on kicks and speed. Karate on the other hand is heavy on focus and power, which was best suited for me.
@modernmartialartist That's right it's really a matter of your own will and character becoming stronger.
People should not train in martial arts so that they can beat others. beating others has already evolved to guns, so there is no reason to use martial arts in this way. Just train to better yourself in the mind and spirit.
Any person who waste his time "dissing" the forefathers of MMA fighting is a fool who needs to get educated. Without this and other combat styles around the world MMA would never exist.
Ryoto Machida is a Karateka and he's doing succesful in MMA. Can't really say the same for Semmy Schilt. And don't forget GSP, Ryo Chonan and Bas Rutten
So what will the mma guy do in a street fight, surrounded by 10 guys all cowardly enough to strike from behind or with a weapon. Stand and box one man? Go to ground and wrestle for five minutes with one, possibly knife weilding opponent? I don't think so. MMA is powerful and effective but if you're looking for rounder martial art I would say it has suffered from over specialisation.
I've yet to see one guy ending up "dead" in a MMA or UFC fight, so much for realism. Most of the dangerous techniques have been banned in MMA, so that matches last longer and give greater entertainment value. Suckers are those who watch MMA but don't know what its about.
Not sure how much this is in agreement with me or whether I am the 'sucker'. But yes fair enough MMA competitions do tend to be more watered down than they used to be. Even so, although I have no experience with MMA directly I have never heard of much in the way of street defence (or weapons defence) being taught in an MMA gym. I'm talking managing your space in a group of people/fighting more than one opponent? Does this training go on?
No, not heard of it before. But sometimes one guy gets pinned on the ground and all he has to do is reach out and bite at the other guy's neck and the other guy will bleed to death, but he doesn't do it, why? Because it isn't a street fight, its for our entertainment.
Yes thats what I was saying though. Every style or system is restricted by its own rules and situation and so MMA or any other martial arts cannot really be considered the best. Its just MMA is in vogue at the moment and so often claimed to be. And its all very well to know about things like biting or finger locks as an effective street defence, but without training regularly in thse techniques the chances are that under pressure your mind will draw a blank.
@fbling I dont personaly like MMA too much but you never know who might snap somebody's neck someday accidnetally, but anyway a person who trains any traditional martial art the right way is more dangerous then any sport marital artist regardless of style.
MMA is a controlled situation, one-on-one in a designated space with soft mats and someone who will stand in a predictable guard. In this respect it is typical of all martial arts all of which developed to deal with local environments and situations.
1000 years of tradition, skills being handed over for countless generations and then someone comments with the usual mma stuff. Hey, I love mma but martial arts are MORE than fighting. How shallow can you be?
is this rellay karate because u are ment to put power into kata
