Bands grow and change with age, AFI has been around a long time. All of the members listen to and have ALWAYS listened to many different types of music. Them going in the direction they have taken was bound to happen, and if they stayed the same through all of these years then they wouldn't have as many fans as they do, or as much success. Get over it and just enjoy the music.

A great song by a great band. That's all there is to it. Calling them sellouts has no effect on anyone and AFI have been getting called sellouts since the release of SYMAOYE and it just isn't true. If they stuck with one genre they would get bored and cease to be a band.

None of us know who the better guitarist was. They played what they never sold I'm sure. Sit down with the two with some acoustics and electrics and I'm sure we'll know.

I know they're fully capable of doing their old music, but you can see how its evolved up until now, and thats a good enough sign its not going back. Just like any respectable musicians, their sound has/is changing (DU/Blaqaduio) I personally just don't like the direction its gone is all.
I like the live version of this song best. I'm also really curious about the new album, but you know every time I've seen them they've always done a wide variaotion of their music.

I disagree. AFI are a rock band now. Jade's good at what he does which is goth and rock.
What Mark played within the hardcore format is way more powerful and creative than what Jade has done. You only have to listen to The New Patron Saints And Angels or Salt For Your Wounds to see that.

i'll admit what Mark did in SYMAOYE was better than what jade was playing in R87, but STS was 100 times more complex and creative than anything Mark ever wrote.
I was disgusted when I first heard STS - it's just derivative pop music. I mean stuff like Girls Not Grey the riffs are so boring and predictable. The only song I can listen to is Synthesthesia.
Basically I think they were going in a really awesome direction with SYMAOYE but changed too much. Once they started having massive choir vocals starting from Black Sails, I think they lost their energy a bit. So that's why I prefer Mark's stripped-down approach.

The reason I think Jade is a hack is because he tries to do things that he's incapable of - that's the sign of a bad guitarist. The solos in Death of Seasons and My Michelle just make me cringe.

And thats not the sign of a bad guitarist, if you sit there and play only what you can play and don't push youself you're never going to improve. Also there is no solo in Death of Seasons.. You're thinking of Dancing Through Sunday maybe? if so i didn't think that solo was amazing or anything. but it was better than any solo Mark ever played in both terms of skill and emotion.

You've completely missed the point. Mark was a crucial part of AFI - Black Sails obviously built on his style on the AFI ep. All Jade has done is increasingly add clean guitar parts into the mix. He's not talented - I can play his songs easily. It's simple pop music.

Come on, listen to Fallen Like The Sky - its so predictable. It's always the same minor chord phrases. Yeah I did see that show but Davey does his screamo thing on it so it turned me off. I have nothing against them for changing but they should just avoid the old songs altogether. File 13 was a BIG mistake.

Now, Davey is obsessed with his looks, which seem to change with every new album. They have music videos of them hanging out with rich people and showing off how artsy they are. @1978deus wouldn't it be selling out if Davey stayed with the same style because thats what everyone wanted? i dont see how its selling out when HE and the rest of the band intiated the change, not the record company. They wanted another miss murder, and there isn't a song on the Crash love album that is remotely close to it. because he didn't like that song personaly to much.

I know they're fully capable of doing their old music, but you can see how its evolved up until now, and thats a good enough sign its not going back. Just like any respectable musicians, their sound has/is changing (DU/Blaqaduio) I personally just don't like the direction its gone is all.

u mean HAD. he doesnt play guitar anymore.. at least not in a band.. in fact hes a dedicated cyclist now who'd have known? and are u forgetting Jade used to play hardcore along with Mark? he actually played it better.. tho i like early AFI more than Jade's bands.. mainly becuz i dont like any of their vocalists but the guitar work was great.. and regardless of whether or not u feel his stuff had "more impact" (which i disagree with completely) its obvious tht Jade is more skilled than Mark..

I disagree. AFI are a rock band now. Jade's good at what he does which is goth and rock.
What Mark played within the hardcore format is way more powerful and creative than what Jade has done. You only have to listen to The New Patron Saints And Angels or Salt For Your Wounds to see that.

But the first 2 albums were really more punk than hardcore.
i'll admit what Mark did in SYMAOYE was better than what jade was playing in R87, but STS was 100 times more complex and creative than anything Mark ever wrote.

I was disgusted when I first heard STS - it's just derivative pop music. I mean stuff like Girls Not Grey the riffs are so boring and predictable. The only song I can listen to is Synthesthesia.
Basically I think they were going in a really awesome direction with SYMAOYE but changed too much. Once they started having massive choir vocals starting from Black Sails, I think they lost their energy a bit. So that's why I prefer Mark's stripped-down approach.

No you're wrong. Skill is only half of it. What about emotion? You can be the most technical guitarist in the world but without feeling behind the playing, it means nothing.
The reason I think Jade is a hack is because he tries to do things that he's incapable of - that's the sign of a bad guitarist. The solos in Death of Seasons and My Michelle just make me cringe.

Bottom line is, AFI were a hardcore band that made a conscious decision to change. It was probably Davey who was responsible and Mark didn't like playing dark music all the time or having a goth image. I like some of their stuff with Jade but it's nothing compared to Mark-era AFI. Jade just isn't a good guitarist.

You've completely missed the point. Mark was a crucial part of AFI - Black Sails obviously built on his style on the AFI ep. All Jade has done is increasingly add clean guitar parts into the mix. He's not talented - I can play his songs easily. It's simple pop music.

Come on, listen to Fallen Like The Sky - its so predictable. It's always the same minor chord phrases. Yeah I did see that show but Davey does his screamo thing on it so it turned me off. I have nothing against them for changing but they should just avoid the old songs altogether. File 13 was a BIG mistake.
