People keep saying, "he was laying there and no one helped him" as if they would have. How many homeless men have you seen sleeping on sidewalks? How many have you woken up? I guarantee none of the passersby thought he was dead. He's laying in a typical "Whino drank too much Malt" position, and in NY its a VERY common site.

Everyone who walked by him probably already walked by 4-5 other homeless men passed out on that same sidewalk.

He shouldn't have tried to physically stop the woman from being attacked. It was a naive act that led to his death.

if you stop and help a guy laying on the street, the police want you to give a witness statement which basically ties you up waiting. call 911 to report it while getting to work before you lose your job and end up on the street. Some other sources mention 911 being called, but not finding the body. I'm sure wherever everyone else lives is full of sunshine and rainbows.
