the car in this video makes the 0-100 km/h in 8 seconds. It's very slow for a 8 Cylinder engine with 3.6 liter! The Mercedes-Benz E280 CDI of my father has a 6 Cylinder with 3.0 liter and 190 hp and makes the 0-100 km/h in 7,4 seconds. I do not understand!

I got one of these last week. aside from damage to the grill and some interior damage, its a good car. I stepped up to this one from a 1.8T 1999 passat and dang, what a difference!
Couldn't stand the worry of buying such a poorly made and designed car (owned a few VAG cars and had nothing but trouble), I'd be on tenter hooks all the time waiting for things to malfunction, break or fall off... Nice car on the face of it though...
Also my Passat is quick as hell, the owner before me must have been rich and done some of his own tune ups on the car because 0-60 is in 6 sec if not less and it pulls hard even when i am going 70-80mph it still can pull like its doing 40-60 which is rare for a car. But in the end i am happy to have a limited production car that will go up in value. Oh did i mention i have a Wagon? Even more rare, 1/3rd of all passats are wagons :)
Although a lot of people are saying go with the manual i am happy with the automatic. I read the reviews and hard to believe it but it said that the auto with the Tic was a better choice because the gears where just right. I like the Auto and it's not like that cannot be made in a pretty fast as car :)

It's not the lightest, and for good reason. It's a midrange luxury car that just happens to be from the autobahn, so it's sporty. Yeah, you can all have a fast car, but a fat AND refined car, now that's good thing. Who'd think a Passat would do that when you've pulled up at a red light! It's the most damn subtle car... ever.

I bought an 03 with 33,000 miles on it last year for 12,500. they have dropped even more so that might be in line. don't buy an automatic though. 6 speed= no torque converters and waaay more fun to drive. make certain you get one with sport package too otherwise you'll be very disappointed. dealer warranty of some sort would be great to, to cover the motor...
It's two VR4s joined on one crankshaft, making it a "w". There's a really good article if you google it, going through the history of the VR6 as a 12 and 24-valve design.

That´s not the reason. In fact diesel engins don´t rev high, because the fuel injection valves aren´t fast enough yet. But as you mentioned already there´s no use for reving a diesel high as they have plenty of torque on the low end of the engine speed range.
That's not true. They have electronic fuel injection...the injection is plenty fast. They don't rev high because they have a long stroke because they need a higher compression ratio than regular gasoline cars.
They rely instead on compression ignition, which requires a really high compression ratio. To get that kinda compression, you need a really long stroke, which sort of limits your options in terms of high revs.
You don't need a log stroke to get high compression, primarily the compression ration is determined by the geometry of the piston crown and the combustion chamber in the cylinder head. The engine stroke doesn't have much say in this at all. Diesels rev slowly because the fuel burns slowly.
That is simply not true, longer stoke does not gaurantee more compression.
Its all down to simple ratio of volumes, which is what the compression ratio is computed directly from. Stroke can play a part in compression but its perfectly possible to get compression ratios independant of stroke length. Diesel engines have lower power output than equivalent size petrol engine because its speed is limited by the time required for combustion", which ultimately limits the useful rpm.

the manual gearboxs gear ratios weren't right: First was short, and second a bit too tall to use in its place for a smooth takeoff.. even one self-declared stick-and-clutch guy said the W8 would indeed be best ordered with the Tiptronic instead - that's what I've heard! :)

W8 in good condition and manual it's less than 6.5s, mine tiptronic is about 7.2s so it's not bad as for big and loaded car like this...and the sound - priceless.

You can't judge a proper drivers (sports) car on power alone. A Caterham 7 or Exige would demolish almost anything on any road short of a drag strip and have sub 2.0 engines and usually well short of 250 bhp.
Engines begin at 4000cc & V8, and are always gasoline. I mean, when one buys a diesel, people around him ask themselves weather he's kinda short on cash... TDI is for the ones who can't afford a real engine.

diesel:5500cc, gas 4000
boost overpressure - diesel 2 atmospheres, gasoline 0,5. If you have a boost of 0.5bar on a 2000cc engine, it will have the same power of a (2000(standard engine)+2000*0,5)=3000cc. So for gasoline we will have 4000+4000*0,5=6000cc, and for diesel 5500+5500*2=16.500!!
The ONLY reason diesels even stand a chance is because they raised the boost. That's it! No commonrail bullshit etc, that's for efficiency, not power. A 2.0diesel can make 150hp ONLY because it has about 3 atmospheres absolute pressure, that's like a 6 litre engine. The turbocharged 3.0 gas engine that bmw has makes 306bhp, but with only 0,4 boost.
Diesel is loved by those who hadn't had a real engine. Ever. Thay can't feel a thing when they floor it, so their conclusion (on their pathetic 150-200hp cars) that more torque is always better. Well, let me tell you no, it's not. It's good for cruising, but not for sport. And don't talk to me about consumption, because you reiterate what I said: if you look at consumption figures, it means you're short on cash, ergo go get a diesel.

Now really, too much torque can hurt performance (when we go over 300PS, at least). My first car was an E39 540i, it drove ok. I put a ZEX nitrous kit on it and went to 470PS & 762Nm torque. Because of the torque, wheels would spin almost everytime. Look at TRUE sports cars, they have huge power, but not too much torque, and that makes them very controllable! It's tons more to explain, but should you interest yourself in the matter, there are loads of places to get informed. Cheers!

i drive a passat vr6 syncro @ 184 hp it goes almost faster than that really i swear! may be not the vmax but its way faster @240 kmh. i'm honest :)

It's not 9 seconds, I used a stopwatch and came out to 7.82 seconds.

The manual transmission does it in 6,5 seconds from 0 to 100km/h.
You can chiptuning your car, that will make it faster.
The Passat W8 is a great car, be proud of it.

The diesel limit is reached when the fuel can't be completely combusted and the characteristic "clouds of black smoke".
This limits the speed of the engine, as the fuel simply can't combust any quicker.
All that low end torque is of course ideal if you want to plough some fields, albeit slowly.

No the Opel inline 6 is just the better engine. Anybody who knows something about engineering of otto engines will also say, that the Opel inline 6 is nothing else than the best engine ever made, vene better than BMW, because it lasts even when put under hard pressure. The Opel inline 6 24V alve engine has dreamcar quality. VW could never afford building luxury engines like this. VR and W and V Crap is poor mans luxury front wheel drive shit :)

the manual gearboxs gear ratios weren't right: First was short, and second a bit too tall to use in its place for a smooth takeoff.. even one self-declared stick-and-clutch guy said the W8 would indeed be best ordered with the Tiptronic instead - that's what I've heard! :)

W8 in good condition and manual it's less than 6.5s, mine tiptronic is about 7.2s so it's not bad as for big and loaded car like this...and the sound - priceless.

lol - you mention that diesels "cheat" by running high boost levels, and then a few comments later you got a petrol 5 series to 470PS using nitrous!
You can't judge a proper drivers (sports) car on power alone. A Caterham 7 or Exige would demolish almost anything on any road short of a drag strip and have sub 2.0 engines and usually well short of 250 bhp.

Rules for LeMans:
diesel:5500cc, gas 4000
boost overpressure - diesel 2 atmospheres, gasoline 0,5. If you have a boost of 0.5bar on a 2000cc engine, it will have the same power of a (2000(standard engine)+2000*0,5)=3000cc. So for gasoline we will have 4000+4000*0,5=6000cc, and for diesel 5500+5500*2=16.500!!

The ONLY reason diesels even stand a chance is because they raised the boost. That's it! No commonrail bullshit etc, that's for efficiency, not power. A 2.0diesel can make 150hp ONLY because it has about 3 atmospheres absolute pressure, that's like a 6 litre engine. The turbocharged 3.0 gas engine that bmw has makes 306bhp, but with only 0,4 boost.

Diesel is loved by those who hadn't had a real engine. Ever. Thay can't feel a thing when they floor it, so their conclusion (on their pathetic 150-200hp cars) that more torque is always better. Well, let me tell you no, it's not. It's good for cruising, but not for sport. And don't talk to me about consumption, because you reiterate what I said: if you look at consumption figures, it means you're short on cash, ergo go get a diesel.

Now really, too much torque can hurt performance (when we go over 300PS, at least). My first car was an E39 540i, it drove ok. I put a ZEX nitrous kit on it and went to 470PS & 762Nm torque. Because of the torque, wheels would spin almost everytime. Look at TRUE sports cars, they have huge power, but not too much torque, and that makes them very controllable! It's tons more to explain, but should you interest yourself in the matter, there are loads of places to get informed. Cheers!
