Enlightenment comes in two forms. The first as a burst of light. The second as described in the film is the divine peace; the still Lake. Mara is the beast within, the shadow self, the lower self. Mara is in all men. Buddha surrender, was enlightened and was ascended. There are other spiritual gifts of awakening as well.
Buddhism is often flatteringly misrepresented by western authors. Buddhism is very much a religion in addition to a rational philosophy. If you want to see what Buddhism really is, read the suttas. Bhikku Bodhi, a western born monk has an excellent anthology of the most important suttas in Buddhism called "Word Of The Buddha"

Nepal is Nepal, and not northern India. Lumbini (Buddha's birthplace) is in Nepal.
