I just read the book "pitch Perfect, The quest for collegiate a capella glory" by Mickey Rapkin and had to come online and search for all of the talented groups mentioned in the book. What a treasure I found! Thanks for posting this up and sharing
@andreaburnett I read the book too, and don't you think these are really just students who are making these wonderful music, despite the politics and drama?
@darik60 I would agree with that asessment! I think the book was just my treasure map that lead me to these hidden treasures! They work hard, and are enormously talented. What beautiful voices!
i don't think they were that much better than the group on the sing-off. i think that group from california golden overtones is better, but that's just me
This is the most impressive, talented, and dynamic female a cappella group I have ever seen, especially at the collegiate level. The level of enthusiasm and passion displayed alone is moving enough, but mixed with true musical talent just makes it a complete package. And the sustained chord near the end with "inhibitions"... I rewound it about 20 times!
Oh, and unfortunately I don't have a video--I would like to get one of them doing that piece and Homeward Bound, but we'll see.
I would like to say, however, their outfits, presence, and overall performance is really good for a female acapella group. I find that too many all-girls groups don't put in the pizazz needed because they are embarassed or just don't buy in. But these ladies do have that :)
could u post a descent vid of NCSU Ladies in Red if there so great? cause the 2 vids on youtube there horrible.. i mean at least BYU has atractice singers to pic up where there voices lack... and btw theres a difference between pushing to hard and projecting your voice over a choir... she just has to be so loud on the normal notes that the high notes are nearly impossible..
Hah--those videos are from a long while ago, and they SUCKED for a long while. They've improved, and I mentionned them b/c I heard their arrangement this year--tasteful and balanced.
And the projecting over the choir thing, that doesn't count as much b/c she's got a mic, and the accompaniment doesn't necessitate that. She's not straining--she's using her diaphragm and all, she just.. it was too abrasive for the song; I felt her excitement got the best of her and it made some phrases droop.
I really liked it, especailly the main vocal, but the others could've done something better wiht the background, I give them a 8.7/10,just bcuz the backgroudn sounded a bit..bland?
its ok i guess. but in my opinion, i just cant stand all girl a capella groups. Not to be sexist, but they cant compare to guys. Men can go as low as a base, and as high as a soprano, and while women can go very high, not even the best of female singers can hit a teners low, let alone a basses. but thats just how i feel
I personally prefer mixed groups. The mens can deliver a good baseline, but for those dramatic points a rising soprano part can give a counterpoint that a tenor just can't.
not that they did bad they were very good. But even listen to the other BYU a cappella choir (the male one) Vocal Point. The God one will make you cry. :D
I'm actually a bass in an all-female a cappella group (Duke's Lady Blue) and I agree that it is more difficult for us to fulfill the range of a guy group, but thats what makes good girl-groups even better...because we do the best with what we have.
I'm a female who used to sing tenor in HS choir. I was the only female singing tenor, and the only tenor who didn't need help with pitch or volume or any of that. We women can compare to guys, we have our own set of strengths, just as men do! So they're different,so what!
This is very true. We have a girl that sings Tenor with us in our Show Troupe, and she is the ONLY one in our section that wasn't constantly reminded about pitch, and she was never told to get on top of the pitch because she was already there. Its nice to know that there are people that comment on youtube that actually DO have a knowledge of vocal music!
I just checked out the other music groups ref. below and find this group to be much better than those listed.
WIth regards to mens groups, BYU Vocal Point, Spider Man is good, and so is Indiana University Straight No Chaser - 12 Days. It has over 4 million hits.

Who cares about the competition?? I'm just saying overall, the tones are better, that's all. The competition is only once a year, 12 minutes a group. Hardly a measure of true quality. I've been in the competition several times personally, I know. But no disrespect to this BYU group though. They're awesome!
the chord at 2.29 is quite frankly genius! love this group, i'm very jealous that im not in it... you look like you have so much fun! well done for your success, you deserve it!
i caught a glimpse of this comment while i was watching and didn't know what to expect at 2.29. but wow, yes, genius. like birds singing in the morning. haha.

The lead stole too much--not because she was good but because she wasn't. Her voice was horrid, she pushed too much, and she was flat.
Try the NCSU Ladies in Red doing that song.
