  • Indisputably, the greatest saxophonist of all time. So many great tunes by the late great GWJ. Listen to "Juffure" and "A Secret Place". It's possible to have multiple favorites and GWJ is proof of this. RIP my brother, you live on through the soul touching melodies you blessed us with.

  • Wow.. Tears in my eyes to hear Grover live with Eric Gale, Steve Gadd and others. A Gift from God..The world would be a better place if everyone listen to this music. So smooth. That keyboard is banging!

  • "The Dark Side" that's what it was originally called, trust me, when I saw him perform it before the album was realeased.

  • oh my god! this is among the best jazz performers!

  • well, my kids hear grover often, my son even puts my songs on his ipod. he likes black frost to name a few.

  • GROVER WASHINGTON JR/Come Morning

    豪華バックに支えられて、ソプラノサックスを吹きまくる、メロウでホットな一曲。

  • One of my all time favoritr from Grover RIP

  • All best is under the gurus like my best man cheers

  • I love this and so many young people have no idea what good music is. I feel stress leave me listening to this. Very much unlike all the banging we hear in todays.. if we can call it music all all. I am 60 and still love this. what a shame old music seems to be dying but if we are smart we will keep it go on living like ourselves. God bless.

  • Eric Gale on gutair. great seeing this!!!!!

  • Mr. Grover Washington Jr.'s smooth melody jazz hits

has been one of my greatest inspirations for many years

now. I'm still sadden of his passing. But his wonderful music

lives ever!!! Thank you Mr. washington.

  • I am so sorry he passed, this generation don't know what good music is and no video will every do justice to the passion he generates with his music

  • classic, melodious, awesome!! SMOOTH JAZZ AT ITS FINEST. I IMPLORE THE NEW GENERATION TO EXPLORE THE FULL SPECTRUM OF MUSIC THAT MADE US WHO, WHAT AND WHERE WE ARE.

GOD BLESS GROVER AND HIS CREW

  • they don't make smooth jazz like this anymore : (

  • I'm 30 years old and my parents recorded this performance on tape. It was on HBO. During the performance he conversed with the audience and they hadn't yet picked a name for this song so they affectionately called it Black No.5 I think. Beautiful song.

  • If You are a true Grover fan Grover Live-Grover washington Jr Live at The paramount Center for The Arts will be released on may 18-Grover like you remember and loved him in his first live recording in 30 years

  • The first sax cassette i got and i've been a fan ever since. NO ONE DOES IT LIKE G.W. TRULY MISSED!

  • What a wonderful way to be introduced to Smooth Jazz Sax.

  • Damn... G.W. sure knew how to caress a melody. Beautiful!

And Eric Gale's guitar sound was legendary.

I miss this era of Jazz/Funk

  • My favorite sax man of all time !!!

    I love you Grover RIP

  • Yeah, they forgot about Grover!

  • Great song Grover!

  • Grover Washington + Eric Gale = TIMELESS MUSIC!!!!Two of the greatest musicians that ever lived!!Your music will live in our heart and soul forever; thank you and thank you for the unforgettable memories.

  • Lovely Lovely Lovely !!!

Someone said.....the skill is not to have a great talent....the skill is to know what to do with it.

Grover certainly knew....1999 we lost a true magician.

I love to think that someone will trip over this peice whilst surfing Y.T and hear it for the first time.......I almost envy them !!!

  • You know its grover as soon as he plays that first note.

  • r.i.p.eric gale i miss your talent.

  • i know i may be part of the young generation but this music is more soothing to me then listening to music now.I could actually sit on my patio and just relieve stress from listening to him.Its a shame i didnt get to see him in concert i wouldve LOVED to see him perform. He's one of my favorites along w/ Ronnie Laws,Kirk Whalum,Boney James,Richard Elliot, and the list goes on.I wish music could go back to this where they meant something even without words =)

  • It is an absolute shame that the young generation of today is not exposed to the genius, yet hipness and soul of such an artist, I feel our generation( 40's) are the last one to experience the diversity of so many genres of music that were not watered down as they are today, thanks to idiot music executives who choose fads over substance and creativity.....at least we have recordings, audio and video so as to remember.........

  • @starfly7 Yo i'm 20 yrs old and i've been exposed to the late great grover washington jr my whole life. I agree with you though, we have far too much crap that is barely worth being called music. I always loved how soft and passionate this piece was. It has a real range of emotions; Ah, what i'd give to be able to see him today, live performance.

  • @rawmaster514 Good thoughts, how unfortunate his passing was now 12 yrs ago.................

  • @starfly7 sadly i agree with you, this is why i expose my children to jazz and the diversity of world music!

  • @Forpeace4 yea when I have kids I refuse to let them grow up on this digital music crap that I grew up around.. I was blessed to find out about real music when I was about 15 or 16... picked up guitar at 17 and my life has never been the same

  • @starfly7 man, i'm a 90s kid, but i know exactly what u mean, 2 me this guy's up there with coltrane, parker, basie, adderly and so many other great jazzos, i detest current music thats just infinite pop sellouts

  • @starfly7 Right on Bro..

  • Dont forget Dave sanborn, Dave Koz, Stanley Turrentine, and Sam Butera for smooth jazz ;)

  • You are right on and then some, I sure do like your music style

  • lol thanx bud. music is amazing,

  • Don't forget Gerald Albright, for any jazz/blues/soul specialization. One of my absolute favourite saxophonists. A mighty talent of our time.

  • love jazz but dont know many artists someone put me d

  • Smooth jazz Kirk whalum Najee Kenny Garrett Boney James George Howard Richard Elloitt Straight Jazz John Coltrane Branford Marsalis Micheal Brecker Ben Webster Sonny Rollins Colman Hawkings
  • HEY don't forget who he's playing with. There will never be another Eric Gale either. Where is Richard Tee? Anthony Jackson is the man (besides Paul Jackson Sr-Headhunters) and Steve Gadd lays it "in the cut"! Cats just don't play like this anymore.

  • great music.thaks ,george!!!!

  • don't compare George Howard's out of tune soprano to nobody. He really sucked to me!

  • Grover was the man, the smooth jaz man. Great post straight to my favourates:0)

  • Grover and Donald Byrd. Two of the absolute best!

  • its dug!

  • The personification of Smooth Jazz. The innovator in true form. He along with George Howard (RIP) paved the way. Kenny G wish he had soul like Grover and George. May their spirit continue to live through the likes of Kirk Whalum, Walter Beasley, Paul Taylor, etc.

  • I agree with tank761st. No one sounds like KG and no sounds like GWJR. I love Grover and miss him dearly. What a classy guy he was in person. Spent some time with him in Atlanta (not doing the fan thing) and he was as pure and genuine an artist as I've ever met. Loved his art so much his respect came through loud and clear...miss you Grover and will never forget you...

  • Dig it!!!!!!!!!!

  • To bash KG is stupid...he found a genre that works...and that is to get to the ladies.

    I am not mad!

When Kenny Gorelick (Kenny G)was jamming with Jeff Lorber, he was off the chain!

Check out Najee, George Howard, Wayne Shorter, Ronnie Laws, Dave Valentino, Dave Liebman, Dave Tofani Steve Lacy, Art Porter and of course Grover to get an idea of the different tones soprano sax. During the 70's, 80's and 90's.

"Please stop comparing musicians and become one" - annonymous

  • I agree MsTexas, if you want hear true KG, grab a copy of duotones, or go earlier than that. Songs like Champagne and Tribeca.

  • Anthony Jackson

    Best. electric Bassist. Ever.

  • BlackCloud,

I appreciate your intervention into this disturbing discussion. Kenny G and Grover have two totally different styles but they are both great sax players. No one sounds like Grover except Grover and for that I am eternally grateful. RIP Grover.

  • Tired of this racial bullshit, just enjoy the music. This track is hot as hell, so much emotion in the performance that it gives me chills. This is what we live for.

  • On December 17, 1999, while waiting in the green room after taping four songs for the The Early Show, at CBS Studios in New York City, Washington collapsed. He was taken to St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital, where he was pronounced dead His doctors determined that he had suffered a massive heart attack. He was 56 when he died.

  • Wow, my band teacher showed us this video 10 years ago. I never thought I'd see it again...Did anyone catch Anthony's bass fill at 6:20? Brilliant!

  • Hey Hon...this is on dvd. It IS a great one... I remember seeing it YEARS ago also.

  • Never, and never forget Richard TEE.

  • amen to that! Richard Tee was a phenomenon... so many artists' records were enhanced by his wondrous sound, unique approach and extraordinary playing!

  • Yes, Amen. Yes Amen like Ottis Reding. Yes Amen as Percy Sledge. Yes amen guy. Sorry if my english is bad. I'm found of Eric Gale, R. Tee. Steve Gadd is the best. About Bob JAMES ? No comment. Without him may be I never know E. KLUGH and the others. He is a good father. lol.

  • right on, brother... these are some of the greatest musicians of all time! :)

  • Check out his work on Ashford and Simpsons So So Satisfired lp...*My fav of their stuff btw*...he's awesome on there!

  • Good as Kenny G! Don't do that to Gover's memory! Besides, Kenny G said he taught himself Grover's notes. Played to Grover's records one note at a time. As they say in hip hop he's bitin' (copying) off him!

  • Kenny G stinks

  • Why would someone even want to compare the greats. we should just enjoy their contributions an respect the authentic skill and dedication they have brought to the industry. Kenny G and Grover are great!

  • Good as Kenny G is (and he is massively popular in these parts), THIS IS BONAFIDE! There's Soul here. Ironically/incidentally, we are doing a feature evening/tribute for Groover Washigton Jr at our club next week.

  • Grover really can put music in motion...da'am I miss him!!!

  • Grover MY MAN! KG lives in elevators and supermarkets. And thats where he should stay. He aint even in the ballpark of grover. :)

  • You misunderstand me... I'm not comparing G to Grover - Grover pioneered this sound undoubtedly, whereas G was clearly influenced by GW. I'm just saying that G is more than just sickly ballads for Department Store music - when live he's pretty funky too. But the above band have far more funk and groove to them - no doubt.

  • To REALLY appreciate KG...you must listen to his EARLY stuff...and also what he did on OTHER artists' lps...he was pretty good back then.

  • keneth gorellick is a simple student post in the area of these 3 sax guru's

  • BY THE WAY IT'S NOT THE PLACE WHERE

WE CAN't COMPARE THE TWO ARTISTS ... THERE ARE THREE GREAT G'S /GROVER GERALD GEORGE - what you think about this???

  • I can agree with this...as far as the smooth jazz rhelm goes...but even Grover surpasses Gerald and George...and you as far as jazz period...you CANNOT for get Coltrane, Parker, Yusef Lateef, and some of the others greats that even Grover modeled himself after.

  • aveo hear again this performance and then talk

  • This is a sweet jazz-funk ballad yet Gadd and the bass player still give it a sweet groove to go with Washington's beautiful melody. To rubbish Kenny G though is harsh. KG modelled much of his earlier stuff on Grover and you can hear the similarities between this and a KG ballad. Kg live with his band are very tight and funky and have a similar sound to this but more updated. I love this tune :) warm summer days.

  • Maybe people who title KENNY G as a master of the soprano have not ever hear the great GROVER... After hear this performance THEY'll never comment who is a master now(RIP GROVER)

  • Steve Gadd's kick drum is gonna pop my speakers!
