I think he should use his own hand on a trick like that. As you can see by doing a quick search, the old spike-under-the-cup trick often results in a stabbed hand.
This is a pretty risky thing to do. There have been cases when the magician has messed up. Just, in this case, he could definitely expect to be sued for a million dollars!

I've performed my own version of this trick many times. I was able to get my tutor in magic to create me a spike for this trick; Even he highly advised me against performing it though.
He DOES work out where it is.. but it does not involve looking or touching the cups
he couldn't have felt for pulse because ellen didn't know which one it was

he was able to see through his blindfold, but only the lower portion. When ellen looked through the blindfold, she looked through the middle portion. It's not too difficult to figure out. The coaster with the metal bit will have a different weight from all the others so when he mixes them up, he'll know which one it is. He moves three, so if one of them feels different, then he knows that it's the one with the metal bit. If they all feel the same, then the one that he didn't move will be the one with the metal bit.
Well, there is not doubt about that the Mentalist knows where it is from the beginning. At the last two cups Ellen says "Left" - but it is really her right hand he presses down. Was I the only one who noticed that? :)
I'm a Magician by Trade, i do mostly Kid's Shows and Restaurants. Last year I bought the Close Up version of this Trick. That one can't be done Blindfolded. I know how this is done but I can't give details. Only to say this, He knew where the spike was the whole time. He wouldn't risk it if he didn't.

Hes got a magnet attached 2 his wrist or finger which can detect the steel nail. Criss Angel used 2 do this too. Its an old trick.

Doing this trick with the hand _of_the_spectator_ is really stupid !!! Magicians somtimes fali, and when they do, I strongly believe they should be the one who suffer from the consequences -not a trusting spectator !!!
