I'm Irish (I'm guessing a lot of people commenting this are too) and I think Ireland is one of the most Gay friendly places in the world, I don't think many people really care that much here who you love. I'm from Dublin (cities, I know, are always more liberal than the country) and I found it offensive only because we had to see how ignorant small town America was, although it was hilarious I felt as if I had lost a bit of my humanity after seeing it. Equal rights for everybody!!!

You can't really count them as representing anything, or popular opinion. You don't see gay hate groups in Ireland like you do in other countries, and all parties are pro some form of gay partnership. It made me proud that only 10 people turned out to protest civil partnership. In most other countries it would have been thousands. (I am gay btw).

I'm from Tralee and lived in Dublin for 4 years and there's no difference in attitude towards gay people.

I disagree with your negative connotation attached to the portrayal of prejudice. Showing it is a very important step in understanding it. There is a difference between explaining something to someone and actually witnessing/experiencing it. It makes for a more vivid realization of how needless and "human" it is of us.
