As usual, Vinnie swings like a rusty gate. Seeing him even attempt to play jazz is a painful experience. Please Vinnie - stick to your lame west coast fusion bullshit.
Don't care what you say, Vinnie's amazing but just ain't even close to Tony Williams. Williams could play 3 times as fast, with a 'scrappy' 'careless' feel at the same time; thus not making his playing sound tense.
But even if I 'only' had Vinnie's skill, I wouldn't be too upset either. :P
I almost forgot Vinnie can swing like nuts; he's been playing mainly fusion/rock these days. I haven't seen him play swing since the Buddy Rich Memorial Concert video in 1992. Those who knows albums/videos where Vinnie plays jazz standards please kindly let me know. Thx in advance.
Check out Chick Corea live at the blue note in Tokyo. It's also a DVD of which there are posts here on you tube. Eric Marienthal's Cross Roads has a killer bop track that Vinnie rips to pieces. He also did some great work with Allan Pasqua.
Hi billyhw! You should listen to Unreel, by Randy Waldman. The standards are rearranged and tremendously so, and Vinnie on tthat album is simply... unreal! (pun intended ;-)
@billyhw man.... that's shit!!! that's not "swing" thats just too many notes and sounds... thats not music!!!! fuck what a great like Vinnie think when he plays jazz... dude he's a fan of Tony Williams well... he should learn his cymbal technique at least....
@billyhw Get Renee Olstead's second album. It's mostly big band style produced by David Foster. Phenomenal. Renee is beyond astonishing and Vinnie really swings on this stuff.
It's not a Stan Getz classic...It's "Seven Steps To Heaven" written by Victor Feldman when he was with Miles Davis. Tony Williams was the original drummer playing it on the Miles recording.
The true masters just love playing, period. It ain't money, it ain't fame, it ain't respect... it's just pure, mad joy.

@givinitsome everyone has his own playing style, if you have the guts to compare 2 giants, why don't you prove your skills then?

Listen to Brian Bomberg Wood and Wood II CD's, totally standard. Nice.

Vinnie needs to get a better sounding China, that thing sounds un-musical.
