I too am brewing the Coopers European Lager kit right now and I'm just thinking about how I'm going to do the 'lagering' process next week. I've been told you can either put the beer into bottles and chill them in the fridge for a couple of months or chill a carboy down then transfer it to whatever storage vessel you wish after the lagering is complete. What would you suggest? Cheers
@Gunnerholic I think a fridge is too cold, unless you have temp control. Don't tell anyone but I didn't bother with any of this, and mine was still very good. My basement is 64F.
@CraigTube Thanks for the reply Craig, I have a mini fridge with a temp control, the maximum being 5C (41F). I brewed the lager at around 15C (59F). John Palmer recommends that the lagering phase should roughly be 10f less than the brewing temp so I don't think I'll be too far out here, obviously the colder your fridge the longer the lagering phase will take.
I saw the video you posted reviewing peihomebrewer's Euro Lager a while back now, how did your brew compare to his? Cheers
Craig - I am new to homebrewing and have someone wanting to sell me a glass carboy.. Theres some mineral deposit sediment in the bottom of the carboy that will not come clean. Is that going to harm my beer ? Thanks .. I hope i get a reply
@snarygare Shouldn't be a problem as long as you can get the carboy for a good price. I personally don't like glass carboys because they get real heavy and if you drop them they make a HUGE mess and can be dangerous (espicially if you have pets or children around). With that said if you decide to get the glass carboy use some PBW and a carboy cleaner with warm/hot water and let it sit for a day or two and it will come out sparkling clean.
Nice stein! I'm jealous! the flowers on the side are edelweiss. Grows in the snow at the top of the European Alps. When a man wanted to show a woman that he loved her she would say "being me edelweiss to prove it," So he would have a challenge ahead to scale the mountain. The Mountain troops during WWII used it as their unit symbol to show they were fierce soldiers...
Cheers Craig! Thanks for your brewing advice, and videos! I'm a new brewer, and between you, Immo, Joe, and others, i've learned so much!
I've got my first batch just about ready to bottle, the day after tomorrow actually, and then my 2nd batch will come out of the primary the following friday.
great stein craig i wouldnt use it often either if i had it id be afraid of breaking it,as i break most all my good beer glasses 17 craig 4mcwatt/ sean
awesome craig . i got one lager that will be kegged this weekend..after that ..and after i brewa all the beers i have planned...i am going to brew a lot of lagers while the temps are right...nothing better than a good pilsner to me
Cool stein. I have 2 of the crystal & pewter steins, also from Germany. Since My family is from Upper Bavaria (south central,yo!),I have the Bavarian crest on the side. hop bines around the lid. Very cool.
Hi Craig ! I Brewed my first Coopers Kit this christmas after getting inspired on how simple homebrewing is, by watching your videos. But i have a problem. It fermented for 7-8 days before i bottled it with coopers carbonation drops (2x per 0.75 bottle) The beer has been sitting in the basement (18-19 degrees celcius) for about 2,5 weeks now, but theres no head on the beer. It has carbonation, but no head... What could be the problem? I am pouring it right.
my pilsner brew stunk aswell but know been in the bottles for over a month it,s looking really good, gonna leave for an other month or so. cant wait. cheers.
I wish I had 3 buckets brewing the cream ale right now! tis best beer I've ever had ... But then again, I haven't tried THAT many microbrews b4 - Except a Sierra Nevada which I loved ... Man I love this hobby! Also getting into cooking nice big stews now that I have the large SS kettle. Would love some good recipes -- tho I just wing it and come up with yummy stews n brews.
By the way, Craig: I did a lot of shopping and found very similar ingredients to the BB American Cream ale you liked so much -- Ordering DME and LME from Morebeer = just 18 dollars and you even get slightly more LME than the BB kit. Hops and Yeast from brewmasterswarehouse and found my local HBSS can get me 50 LB bags of Corn Sugar for $44 .... Austin Brew supply also has 50 LB dry malt for $144 - free shipping. More beer is also free shipping I believe. So $20 is all for the cream ale!
I ordered Mr. Beer kit on sale for $20 and I'm *SO GLAD* I went ahead and invested in a full 5 gallon kit + brewers best ingredients at the same time. If I only had Mr. Beer to taste as my first judgement on beer making, I would have been so disappointed! It's so bland compared to a good ingredient kit like Brewer's Best!
cheers craig....how long do you leave your beers before you drink..is there anything wrong to drink it early?? i seem to find it hard to keep my newbee hands off my beer!!!
I'm with ya! .. I just started brewing a couple weeks ago -- Was impatient and bottled my first 5 gallon batch just after a week in fermenter. Started drinking it just a couple days after bottle. Brewers Best American cream ale is so delicious - even at room temp! I'll only have a couple 6 packs left by the time it's 2-3 weeks old. I figure it's a learning experience so we can see how our beer develops over time.
@CraigTube If they're marketing the product to English speaking people then of course they're going to use the name that English speaking people are familiar with. The very fact that they have used the English spelling for "beer" in "beerstein" on the card that came with it shows who their target market was. Germans spell "beer" as "Bier".
The funny thing is that in Germany they don't call it a "Stein". In Germany it's called a "Bierkrug" which basically means "Beer Mug". "Stein" in German means "Stone", so naturally they don't call a beer mug a stone. "Stein" is what English speaking people call it, I guess just cause it's something they can pronounce that sounds German.
