Top comment has it wrong. Jewish comes from the word Jew, which comes from the name Judah, one of the 12 tribes of Israel/sons of Jacob. The ancient Jews were generally referred to as Hebrews, ethnically, and Israelites, nationally/spiritually. The word Israel used to refer to all 12 tribes and Jew used to refer to Judah and one other tribe, Benjamin, I think. Nowadays they're interchangeable--hence Israelis are Jews, which are Hebrews, which are Israelites. This does not affect one's religion.
