Why is everyone in this thread talking as though Nina Simone wrote this song? I'm like a lot of you in that I have never heard a version that can really compare with Simone's, but the song was around long before Nina, and really, it's there for anyone to adapt and attempt to make their own. Lauren Hill has as much right to sing is as did Nina Simone or the Weavers or many others.
IMO Hills version sounds too condemnatory however, whereas Simone's was more compassionate, which spoke to me more

I agree with you.. its not about her sounding like nina... noone can. After watching this a few times maybe its the people playing the beat that is messing it up.. it just does not go together. Something about the unity of the vocals and the beat puts things askew.

I get what she is doing here, It's her thing and this sounds more like the peter tosh version not Nina Simon. Lauryn said in a song " anything that is not changing is not living" so many want her to be who she was and just won't let her change and that is unfortunate. This isn't her best but at least it isn't the same old stuff we hear everyday on the radio same mix, same flow, over the same " candy ass beats"

Whoever is there cheering must be either hard core fans, bust be confused about what's happening there or doesn't really know Ms. Hill by history, because it seems to me like she's tripping. I graciously withdraw from this display of Lauryn Hill's adaptation of Sinnerman and remain content to the original piece.

I thought this was good. In fact, Lauryn, more than other artist, could capture Miss Simone's highly nuanced, folk-soul-gospel and come out with a good product. "Lauryn Sings Nina Simone" that's an ablum I would definitely cop.
