  • I don't agree with what this lady said about gymnastics. Gymnastics on balance beam can be beautiful and art. I love gymnastics, especially Russian gymnastics.

  • I understand what she said in this post via English translation. Thank you.

Skill in ballet should be a form with which one's emotion can be tangible.

Full of skill, but less emotion makes a ballet dull!

  • какая же она красавица! И годы ее не тронули. Браво, Майя!

  • Thank you! for giving us an opportunity to see this interview. It is great that you put English translation. I would have love to see the next part of interview. Is there any way you can upload it?

    Many thanks

  • RoughDancer ! Thanks for video so much,

but not complete..is there any chance to see full version ? Thank you.

  • Perhaps this is just me... - isn't there something about her that reminds you of Audrey Hepburn? I don't know, it's her general manner, or her expression sometimes... I first noticed this in the video about her celebrating her 50th wedding aniversary.

:) :) Anyway, i think she is lovely, and in my opinion, she is especially good the the spanish roles, like Don Quixote and Carmen.

  • she's a fascinating woman! I'm always captivated by her wonderfully strong look! and I totally agree with odile77 about the skills and the art. it's good to have people who can remind us what art is! thanks for sharing AND for translating! I think I'm going to start learning Russian soon! :D

  • Как она красиво говорит по-русски, со МХАТовским произношением: "верте", "танцавать"!

  • Вот то, что Майя Михайловна говорит о танце-модерн, относится ко всему современному искусству.

  • Thank you for translating.

  • Thanks for the translation, she is not only the greatest ballerina ever, beautifull and gracefull, she is right all we see these days is great skill not ART!

  • The English translation was great, but here's what's bothering me about art. I don't think it's about "the soul"..I don't like explaining things with mysterious answers like that. I think it's about experience. As a child I thought a Picasso wasn't art until I was exposed to other art..THEN I knew it was art,I understood the expression. So what bothers me is that artistic experience changes impression..the very nature of art changes for a person over time. It is then not one thing or universal.

  • I very much agree with you how one's perceptions and experience of the world can be expanded by art. But I also agree with her that art that's only cerebral and not emotionally engaging becomes cold and ultimately an object of thought, not of a full experience. And a thousand years from now, who's to say what from this era will be considered great art and what will be considered junk.

  • Such wise words...if only their meaning was better applied to dancers of today.

  • thank you for the video roughdancer, and of course the translation!

  • she is a genius

  • RoughDance, would you be so kind to put in the description of the video the date it was filmed, or Maya's age? Thank you so much for adding these details!...

  • It was shot most probably on December 18, 2005. The program was devoted to Maya Plisetskaya's 80th anniversary.

  • She was 80 years old when this was shot? I'm sure she's incredibly well preserved, but no way is she 80 in this video.

  • my cousin is 89 and u would never ever guess it. an ex fisherman on the island of ischia. haveing a young mind is the trick

  • Yes, she is 80 years old here. She is still dancing at 83 (not the same roles she's famous for) still with an amazing body and movement.

  • The subtittles are simply excellent! Great job!!!

  • Thanks for your help, RoughDancer, I got it now!

  • aorry, but I can't get a translation

  • Click on link 'more' below the title 'About this video' to expand the description. Or read the comment by shebrushka - another version of translation.

  • Thankyou so much for the Translation!

  • "Hence, you can make a hundred of fuete, but it will not reach the soul. "Tricks are great!" -- some would say. But in that case, you should go to the circus, there it is made much better. Or freestyle exercise, gymnastics - what tricks they have not maid! They bend and even tie their bodies! "

  • "This happened to me when I was in India. When I was dancing the Swan there, no one had a question: "what was it about?" In the next performance I was dancing Pas de Deux from Don Quixote with all the tricks and fuete. Hindu people started to ask me: "what was it about?". I said I didn't know either. May be about 32 fuete, I said. And this doesn't touch anyone.

  • That's why I don't like it "about nothing"..."the dance about nothing". In that case it is "about nothing" in the soul. What is it for, then?

Nowadays you can often hear: "oh, this is modern, probably you don't understand it". A person thinks: "may be I am stupid, I don't understand it" and he doesn't trust himself, but this is wrong. Trust yourself people, trust! If it creates an impression on you, it means this is good. If there is no impression, then it is not good.

  • "I can feel, when I take the audience away...and I take away because I give something back. Sometimes, I even don't know what it is.

I feel I can make people to be intent and to hold their breath. After that, a huge success happens. It means that I played that part well. And it refers to any audience, because all the people are the same. People apprehend life and art in the same way. The question is: "Will it touch the soul or no?" And there is nothing else.

  • Translation in short: doesn't matter what the dance or art is about, it should touch your soul, than it's good. If it doesn't - it's not good enough, whatever technical tricks there are or "modern and fashionable" it is. Trust yourself people.

  • She is 82 now. She was born in 1925

  • Maya Plisetskaya is simply amazing! A true artist!
