When Maria said "What about Mary?", the movie "There's Something About Mary" popped into my mind. That's the alternative title to this game!! Omg I crack myself up!!! =P
Silent hill 2 is the best of the series... for what it makes us experience. But this Silent Hill is totally out of the SH "main storyline" with Alessa, Harry etc... that's why some people don't like it. But SH2 is truly awesome, we can't deny it (the characters, the music, the twist, the psychology, the tragedy...).
I think that In Water is the canon ending. James did say he will not kill himself to Angela, but he forgot that he killed Mary as well... so we can't believe all the things he said.
He killed himself with her in his arms by driving into the lake. When he sayed "Now we can be together", he meant that they could be together, in heaven.
The endings dont really work like the other silent hill games. There is no "good or bad" endings. The creators didnt want to have any ending be a "real" ending. They intended to have "the ending YOU get when playing is the real ending. Which ever ending you get is the "real" ending. Get it?

also in the maria ending, when mary finishes reading her letter, theres another scene where james and maria are walking. Maria stops and starts coughing, and James replies, "you better do something about that cough"
This could possibly indicate that maria is sick, and james having to experience the whole nightmare again. Poor james :(

The Leave ending is the most common ending, and the easiest to obtain if you play the game normally, and dont treat maria to bad or good.

the Maria ending just shows that he learned nothing and therefore his punishment isn't over. He will lose Maria to the same illness he lost mary to.
