There's a similar shortcut when you try to land near the river when going left instead of right. Although sometimes Lakitu drops you in the river and you're stuck forever...

I recall doing this glitch, jumping to the right just like shown here, but going to the first farthest tree... and then I got stuck forever :/ Then I tried going all the way on the left side after the jump, until I found the sweet spot, the center of a little hill next to the giant Yoshi sculpture and the Snowbombs area. BUT! You have to be extra careful to not touch the track on the way, or Lakitu will drop you in the middle of the mined area. >_<

The game appears to have been recorded on the N64, and he had the same copy before the Wii came out, so it probably is. It might also work on the Virtual Console, but there are more likely even weirder VC-only glitches.

If you want even a faster speed run, simply back up at the start. When you are just past the bridge, start accelerating forward. When the bridge ends you will see 3 terrain types, the main road, the bridge and the snow to the outside. You need to jump from the bridge to the snow without touching the main road. Then when you're in the snow, go right until it picks you up again. It will put you right at the start where you can complete the lap.

Takes less than 10 seconds per lap.
