For "Who Are You," I think Townshend put his guitar thru an Arp 2600 and used the auto-trigger to gate the sound and pan each note. It would be much cheaper and easier to use any modern synth that has an external audio input. The Evolver can do it very well along with dozens of others. Also, check out the new Boss "Slicer" pedal. You can nail Won't Get Fooled and Who Are You. I also hear good things about the Adrenalinn pedal too.
I take it that you are a radio announcer in the Denver area, judging by your speaking voice. It's funny, I never think of those people sitting at home, playing a guitar.
I'd be interested in knowing what equipment you have in all there, and what you recommend for getting electronic/ambient tones out of a guitar.
That's brilliant! Could you please explain how all the equipment is hanging together (I'm a guitarist!) For example what do you program into the MC50 - is it a sequence of timed notes, and what octave range etc? Also, what are you playing on the guitar - strumming a straight chord every few beats or some sort of arpeggio? I've had a GR300 from new but never used it. Inspired me to give it a go, but now I can't find the cable! Thanks.
I discovered the Joness site a few days ago. priceless in terms on info. great stuff. I will start looking seriously when i know for sure what i'd like. The 707+700 combo is not really for sale anyway, i just borrowed it from a befriended studio. Thanks for the nice contact and your informative demos.
The GR300 tracks infinately better but the 700has a ton more sounds. You can actually use the 300 on stage and not worry about it glitching. The 700 is great in the studio for fat pads and ballsy bass textures but you really have to adjust your playing. The 700 = love/hate. I use the 300 more - but my 700 is mint and looks awesome.
I currently have a borrowed GR700 + G707 but the guitar is not working very well so it's hard to tell how well it would respond if fully functional. I like the basic sound of the 700 (as i like the JX3P) and the system i borrowed also includes the PG200 programmer which is very neat. I am thinking of hunting down a G808 or 505 plus a GR300 and a GM70 which would pretty much cover what i want to do but i think that this constellation might cost me an arm and a leg.
I went thru three 707 controllers before I found one that really worked. People have a tendancy to unload junk on Ebay with a disclaimer they are "unable to test it." Also - its imperative to have the actual roland 24-pin cable with the metal ends. The plastic ones never seem to work right for me. I have a 505 as well. I hear the 808 is sweet. The Joness site has all the info you will need. He recommends the Ibanez controller and they come up once in awhile on Ebay.
Hey man thanks so much for putting this video up! I've been playing music my whole life, but really want to get into all this. How can I go about learning how to do all of this, and what instruments thanks a lot!!!
keep an eye on Ebay. The synth goes from $300 - $600 depending on condition. Make sure you get one where the seller has recently tested it. Often times people have sold the guitar controller and can only say the synth worked the last time they were able to play it...which may have been years ago.
I think they were used for carrying the unit. BTW - check out joness dot com for info on these and other ancient Roland guitar synths. (You Tube wont allow URLs) This guy is the premier expert on these things. I have a GR-700 which I love very much, but I learned from his site about the beauty of the GR-300.
its funny to have 1 000 000 of 1/4 jack all around. Nice sounds man! Someone said to me that Iron Maden use this roland guitar on album 'somewhere in time'
Adrian Smith brought synth sound to Maiden he used his Custom Jackson with midi pickup connected to Roland GR-700 guitar synthesizer look for some vids on YouTube - Somewhere on Tour
Another great vid! You do an unusually good job explaining what you're doing, showing the gear used, and editing it all to make it interesting to watch. And of course, it sounds pretty cool too. :-P Thanks!
Very cool... I just got GR-300 with the Ibanez X-ING IMG2010 controller... I'll have to try this. I think I could pull it off by going midi>x0xb0x>GR300 have to give it whirl
This put a smile on my dial... when I think of the GR-300, I usually think of Belew & Fripp, who used one on the 80s King Crimson. If I'm right, Fripp also used it on Bowie's "Scary Monsters", the HexaFuzz is how he got the hairy slashing sound on "Fashion". "We are the Goon Squad, and we're coming to town... Beep Beep!"
"The Relay" is one of my favorite Who tunes. Also...on the Who Are You album Entwhistle does a killer synth filter bit on the song "905" You can tell he cranked the synth thru an over-driven guitar amp which really gives it an "in-your-face" quality.
Patchbay synth-forgetb the name though. Leslie West was on the radio talking about session work with the Who-he talked about the 'Ernestine Phone patchcords'...
Nice 'breathe' progression at the beginning btw...
Baba O'Riley was actually done entirely on Pete's Lowrey TB-01 Berkshire Organ. Those early models had a feature called "percussion or marimba repeat." It was basically a chord repeat function. Tones would repeat as 16th notes. Many of the black keys would come in on the off-beat, creating what sounded like a 32nd note. If you listen closely you can hear times the entire chord is repeating...not just individual notes.
Like an arpeggiator...yeah, I realize the chord is repeating...thought it was a synth. Some stuff on Scoop liner notes about his love for the organs...
I can remember having a go on the Gr-300 when it first came out,and drooling over it but it was out of my price range.Your video is great,so well done and the music 5 stars.
Do you remember what the GR-300 originally went for? I was a drummer back then and had no interest in that sort of stuff. It wasn't until I started paying attention to the unconventional sounds Pete Townshend and Joe Walsh had been getting out of synths. Speaking of which - a Walsh sound from his "Barnstorm" album was the inspiration for another tune I recently did for YouTube called "Barbie Moog."
I made a slight mistake it was the Gr 700 I played ,you have the(ibenez made for roland)707 made for that synth. They were over £3,000 new. I love the way they tried to get rid of the harmonics with the material stabilizer piece running parallel from head stock to body.
So awesome...what was the the synced used for?
That is the part that I dud not understand.,,are you playing parts of that live and other gr300 parts were sequenced?
Thanks
