the chipset spiked before i could do this though (cheap motherboard with a dangerous combo of NVidia chipset and AMD),
i recently got a 3Ghz all AMD bundle, amd chipset, 3Ghz 64Bit dual core amd cpu and an ati card (AMD owns Ati) therefore i doubt anything can go wrong this time.
except the fact the heat plate is soldered as this is 3Ghz+
LOL... Without the IHS the processor would overheat easily because the heatsink's so big. The heatsink's contact would need to have perfect contact to maintain a stable temperature. Without the IHS the processor would die. FYI IHS stands for Intergrated Heat Spreader. ;)
With an ihs, its like a sandwich: processor core -> thermal compound -> IHS -> more thermal compund -> waterblock. What physically rests on the processor core in either case is a flat surface of equal surface area, so cooling performance is improved.
The problem becomes seating the waterblock - where before it was on a larger stable surface, it is now balanced on the smaller processor core and needs to be perfectly flush.
i can't stink anything in any of my processor. not enough room. most ihs are glued to the surface of the pcb.

Are there any advantages for doing this on a non-overclocked CPU?
Will the decrease in temps improve the CPU's life at all even if it was running at normal temps with the IHS attached?

i wanted to do this so i could put real thermal compound between the spreader and die, not their thermally conductive (insulating) rubber.

@RavinTekman isn't it mostly soldered on so there is excellent conductivity

@themassau
usually only for their 'high performance' chips,

@RavinTekman so blakc edition and other tdp at 125watt and there next high end phenoms at 95 watt (the x4's)

I usually like having the ihs to prevent damage to the die. Getting an e8600 that already has been modded.

Wouldn't that have been easier with a single-edged razor blade? Less risk of cutting yourself

Maybe he's emo and would welcome the cutting.

Super thanx it all makes sense now what I read in the internet about IHS

nice work dude, which athlon/opteron was ??

Why you clean the IHS? lol
aispopar 4 years ago
Probably so he wouldn't make a mess or so it wouldn't slide all over.

Those are the safest razors for avoiding nicked traces. I wish CPU's didn't have these noobshields in the first place *sigh*

Noob shields? These are to help cool the processor.

there only in place so people dont crush the proc die... removing them decrease temps usually by 5 C

This was pretty good. Now I just don't know what I can use for a shim T_T
