  • Thanks Mrjoey for the info, I'll definitely follow up.

I saw Hugh Cornwell a few weeks ago play Rattus straight through plus much more Stranglers and he was amazing, unbelievable high energy and right on. Shocking that he could pull it off without a keyboard, really, and the place was way sold out (in SF) Incendiary

  • @ziggybin You've put too sharp a point on it. He's saying don't be a fool. "Make sure.... you're receiving the signals they send" Everyone is not skin deep.

  • You better watch out for JJ's Triumph RS

  • When did people stop looking like the average bloke?

  • Always thought they said "you better watch out for the Scooby".

  • I used to think it said better watch out for the scoobies when I was a kid. Always thought of Scooby Doo

  • so glad they came to the states, Richmond VA, early 80's. Great show

  • they just started playing this song a lot on XRT, I wouldn't have known it was over 20 years old

  • Long live the stranglers and their great music from the eighties...MORE FANTASTIC ´80´s music on my channel!!!!

  • words to live and die by

  • Jet Black, lol? Now that sounds like a 70s punk name.I heard these on a tv show and now I am hooked.I dont know their music but it sounds BRILL"""The Stranglers, lol, great name. This is punk I reckon, not hippy ramones for gods sake!!!!!!!!God.from what I heard, ramonmes are SHIT compared to this sound!FACT!!!!!!!!

  • Tune of my childhood, gotta love it. I've fallen in love with Stranglers and, of course, with Hugh Cornwell. I really don't understand how people can not love such music, you can't compare today crap, which you're forced to listen beacause of the media, with true great music like that. Please send me back to the past :(

  • all time classic!!!

  • sound like its in mono sound quailty

  • Watch out for some really good punk 1970s 1980s from me. Really do miss those days so bad!!!

  • love this!!!!!

  • Jeez, 25 years ago, remember buying the 12inch

  • Absolutely love this song. Jet Black looks just like my brother in law...guess we know what brother in law will look like when he's around 70 then going by current pics I've seen of JB :) Love him playing the hand drums in this.

  • pure style

  • Thanks for a friend for sharing this with me. It was a song that always touched me I never knew the name or performer of.

  • Timeless.

  • This is just about the time that the drummer Jet Black started to metamorphosize into Private Doberman from the Phil Silvers Show. It's quite an interesting phenomenon to watch.

  • Thanks for sharing flybreath. Yes - very apt considering what we were discussing. Got to get past the "Vessel" and get to the "Essence". Great song, my sister is a massive Stranglers Fan.

  • No the song is about phony Americans.

  • I always thought this was about girls who look older than they actually are! Like getting your collar felt by the old Bill for under age sex. Amazing what make up can do to transform a face, Hollywood have been doing it for donkeys years. Saw this class group in Koln, whilst stationed in Germany, and Coventry in the 70's when they were kicking Ass!

  • AC/Dc are`nt Australian matey, look up Kirriemuir, you`ll find the Original singer wore a Kilt, FREEEEDOM! Gotta love those wacked out cock smoking Aussies who have been butt fucked from Dingos, I blame Rolf Harris he was instrumental and having all Aussies interbred with Dingos.

  • @woodyfurball, do your research properly. The Young brothers who founded AC/DC might have been born Scots, as was Bon Scott, but not their band. That'd be like me saying that because because I was born in South Africa the IT firm I started and own in Auckland (NZ) is a South African firm. That's nuts. Acca Dacca is an Aussie band regardless of what Rolf did with the dingoes.

  • well you've got Rolf now so perhaps he can get you interbred with stoats

  • Is this an Australian band?

  • No man there English and have been going for the last thirty five years. You don't get good Australian bands on the scale of English bands.

  • ACDC is one of Australia's best

  • excellent song..THANKS!

  • I see I was not the only one to her " You'd better watch out for the scoobies"!!!! What did Scooby Doo and Scrappy Doo ever do to the Stranglers? Although, Scrappy Doo should have been 'put down'!!

  • Great Band, great song:) Thanks for posting it:)

  • Don't make a long story out of this. For me it's ony memories.

  • The Stranglers really came into their own about this time - 'Golden Brown', 'Always The Sun' - better than their earlier stuff.

  • I dunno it sounds like two completely different bands, this stuff sounds dated badly whereas the earlier albums still sound fresh

  • Everyone to their own taste. They are the only punk band (I would class them as punk, though many would disagree) that I prefer their later stuff to their earlier. I love early Clash, for example, but went off them when they became just a rock band (London Calling and later).

  • I saw them in the 70's too. Going to see them this month. Looking forward to it but not sure about the current lead singer as I thought Hugh Cornwell was THE MAN!

  • saw them live three times in 1970's. i am 48 years old and still have them in my blood......cant move on...addicted..probably play a track at my funeral....

  • I saw them at the Glasgow Apollo at least 3 or 4 times in the 70s - half the audience was up on the stage with them at one gig.

  • Like this song. Good message. This world functions on the principle of 'skin deep'.

  • Great song -probably one of thie best with the mysterious, spooky melody and mood -always worked for them, as was the song 'Duchess'. But what is themeaning of this song 'SKIN DEEP'? What's it about?

  • @XMARINEmax

...i reckon its just simply warning everyone to be careful who they trust...as some people are just 'fairweather friends'...and that your life is only what u make it to be...could be wrong but don't think so :-)

  • Ah. ok thanks. that explains some of it. What about Hugh? What do you think? : -)

  • ...well Hugh was one of the founder members and left in August 1990 citing differences with other band members and a desire for a solo career.

My personal opinion is that the the band lost one of their best talents at this moment.....he was the man :-)

  • "what is themeaning of this song 'SKIN DEEP'? What's it about? "

My understanding, for what it is worth, is that its about 'users' - the type of person who pretends to be your friend just so they can get something from you.

  • My childhood heroes!!!

  • Bought their first albums from bootleg tape stores in San'aa, Yemen. Great then, great now.

  • The singer kind of looks like Wolverine from the X-Men. Good song.

  • That is an excellent comment. Please accept my heartfelt congratulations.

  • fantastic group gr8 era as well

  • Better watch out for the scoobies!!!!!!

  • LMAO! I never could figure out what they were saying and used to substitute "scoobies" in lieu of "skin deep". Oh that's funny.

  • I used to listen to this song back in the 80's on a new wave radio station in NYC..WLIR 92.7FM.

  • That was were i heard it from...WLIR was the greatest station back then..If you like that station I strongly recommend going to New Wave Outpost website..You can get many uploaded WLIR Tapes from there.

  • what's the website because I am a big WLIR/WDRE fan, well I rather when it was WLIR.

  • @cheffdoggy New wave outpost website,,look for vintage tapes of Wlir and kroq California 80s music and many more user uploaded tapes

  • @subalfie 1980 Dallas radio station KZEW the zoo, every sunday at 10:30 for 98 min. they had a show where they played new wave and punk music. If it wasn't for this show I would have never heard of the Stranglers and all the other punk and new wave bands like the Pretenders who are nowadays played on classic rock radio. What the hell was wrong with the world back in those days?

  • @subalfie malibu sue

  • skins skins skins (:

  • No left channel

  • Great song by a great, yet very underrated band.

  • Они не недооценные. У них просто оцобых качеств нет. Я согласен, что они хорошая группа, я сам их долго слушал, но сейчас знаю, что есть группы намного лучше них.

  • The Stranglers at their absolute finest. Thanks so much for posting!

  • @chuckschilling

    Don't know about that...

  • When this song came out it took my breath away - so serious and so right. I heeded it.

  • My brother called his band "SKIN DEEP"

He was a punk in the '80's but a great family man.

    RIP Russell Stephen Hall.

    Love you Bro.

    Michael James Hall.x

  • Being a punk and a great man aren't mutually exclusive are they?

Some of my best friends were punks whilst I was heavy metal, happy days indeed.

    RIP

  • @JOCKWYLER07 Nice share,RIP to your Brother Russell,how sad...prayer said.

  • Cheers for the vid Wormster. been years since I've seen this. I'm a massive Stranglers fan. since 78. Seeing them in March It will be my 9th time

  • This band really changed over the years, and they didn't get worse as they got older. This still sound fresh today!

  • super band, super song!

  • ufothe lighten up its only a song u like it or hate it would have been enough

  • haha lol, BOTH of you :)

  • @ziggybin I agree man, who the f**k does that pretentious p***k think he is ?

  • thanx for posting! And of course, not making money - I doubt the writer of this song saw much himself...all the best

  • A Fine Atmospheric Song in the Rock Tradition with Lyrics more Thoughtful than most A Likable, though Repetetive Piano "riff" holds ones interest, the Tune not being the most Melodious Composition, but Agreeably Infectious, like many a Rock Song However,in case I am perceived as being too Critical, I do Enjoy this Song very much Pianists please note: This Melody Sounds Great on "your" favoured Instrument Enjoy!!!

  • @ufothe3 BEHAVE !

  • You better watch out for the schoolies.

  • Great haunting song

  • Great song, lame video...even by 1984 standards.

  • a long long time ago when i was 4 stone lighter i saw the POLICE and 7 days later THE STRANGLERS. i had been looking forward to seeing the police for months but its the stranglers i remember and the stranglers i am still a fan of.

  • concierto genial en la playa de esa ciudad que se llamaba La Coruña en las fiestas patronalesde 1994

  • One of the best songs ever..and my introduction into the stranglers..by this time they had gone sorta mainstream..but still good...

  • Briliant song, timeless and legendary!

  • Great song - brings back some memories. still have the LP somewhere in a box of old records?

  • Fabulous song! Thanks for posting

  • I bought this album at the time when i was 16, on casette ! lol CD was just coming out about then but i didn`t have a player at the time. I have it on cd now though ! GREAT ALBUM !

  • if you knew the band better you would not say such thing.

jet black was really far from being a self important drummer - he was just an unlikely, sensitive conga player ..but the stranglers ever struggled with being undefineable being attacked by people thinking in categories

  • I love this song. when I first heard it on the radio I misheard the lyrics as

"better watch out for the skinned knee"

  • I always thought they were saying (Better watch out for the scoobies) (1:18)

  • Ha! thats even funnier!

  • I was driving home from work the other day and was tuned to this song and after they played it the announcer said he went for years thinking it was "skinned knee". I didn't even know what the words were until he mentioned it was "skin deep". I think you generally pick up words a lot easier when they're spoken, rather than sung.

  • 1:08ish...Kevin Spacey...thoughts???

  • that audio quality is really shitty. bring the stereo mode!

    HEY, it's the internet and it's 2009!

  • Comment removed

  • you dork, stranglers are english u complete pillock
