Call me crazy, but in this case I think American Airlines has the right idea... (polish the dam skin, ad a decal, and you're good to go... doesn't paint add to the weight & aero/drag of an aircraft?)

@eyestoenvy Agreed. Now, I'm a Conservative, but even I'm a bit concerned about the environmental impact of painting a whole plane. What happens to the acres of masking tape, plastic, paint-tainted paper, the overspray, the tainted water resulting from when they strip the original paint, the stained coveralls, the dust from all the sanding, etc? All that stuff ends up in dumpsters, landfills, ground water. And this is just one plane. Imagine the waste left behind by thousands of them.

@eyestoenvy It adds to the weight for sure but not so much on the aerodynamics. The major downside with polished aluminum (like AA) is the corosion tends to be worse despite the sealant, etc.

Zinc Chromate Primer. It prevents dissimilar metal corrosion and its a primer for bare aluminum and semi painted aluminum. Its a FAA requirement for all metal parts on a plane.

How was the rudder balanced when painted as it appears that it was not removed by leading edge of Victorville, California within this video. As we recall Leading Edge at times utilizes Pacific Aerospace to handle the nuts and bolts of such work.

Only on the fusealage we take the paint off to the bare metal and if the wings are all chipped and cracked; including the belly and wing to body we take it down to what is called the honey comb.
