The funny thing is that when she her top off and he cups her breast, which the director told him to do without informing Bancroft, and she nonchalantly starts rubbing her top and seems to not to react at all, Dustin felt like he was going to bust out laughing so just as he is about to lose it he walks away and bangs his head off the wall and tells himself to stop laughing, get it together but Bancroft continues with the scene so he returns and finishes the dialogue. Pure accident....pure genius.
A classic film with a classic example of simplistic reverse psychology. Hoffman thought he couldn't act and was miscast. He was a nervous wreck making this film. Luckily his character was equally insecure so his on-camera meltdown was hailed by critics as great acting.
"Maybe we could do something else together....a movie"? I was 17 when this came out and Anne Bancroft was 37. I wonder if I could do it with an older woman.
"I find you desirable, but, I - for God sake, can you imagine my parents? Can you imagine what would they say when they just saw us here in this room right now?"
"What would they say?"
"I have no idea, Mrs. Robinson."
I couldn't help but laugh at that comedic exchange. Genius!
The funny thing is that the brast part and him hammering his head on the wall wasn´t in the script. He went to the wall and hammered his head on it because he thought he screwed up ^^
I can't stop watching this scene, especially that the part from 1:42 - 2:00 was unscripted. It amazes me how they carried of this scene without laughing, especially Anne Bancroft. They're awesome and so is the entire movie.
@cinerama62 I kinda did but it never went *that* far. It's how Mr. Robinson unwittingly describes the very struggle of "fighting them off" while at the same time he believes a man in his 20s should start "sowing his wild oats".
I have seen this movie so many times, and EVERY TIME this scene has me in hysterics. It's just brilliant. It's shot SO seriously, with such chic dryness, and against that energy the humor is just fantastic. Mrs. R's waiting to blow out her mouthful of smoke...the way she focuses on rubbing the stain off her collar...Ben's head-banging...it's SO GREAT! Not to mention how cleverly Mrs. R goads Ben into doing what she wants. ;)
Benjamin: "Oh no, Ms Robinson. I think--I think you're the most attractive of all my parents' friends." HA HA HA, one of my favorite movie lines of all-time.
@reedunculous If I am not mistaken, Dustin thought this out himself..and the beating the head was just a reaction not to laugh or sth like that - is that correct? Question to you who saw the bonus to The Graduate.
Both Hoffman and Bancroft are amazing... watch "Dustin Hoffman salutes Mike Nichols" on youtube for some info about when he bangs his head on the wall... nice little story :)
Anne Bancroft- what a tremendous actress! She could do no wrong. I had read that the hand-on-breast move was indeed unplanned; Mike Nichols told Hoffman to do it without any warning to Bancroft. The head-banging was NOT part of the plan..it was simply Hoffman working off his embarrasment of not having the ploy "work". Nichols absolutely loved the scene, so much that he began laughing hysterically. So fo him, it worked...as it does for most of us as well!
Every time I watch this film (probably a dozen times over the years) it still teaches me things that I can relate to in my life - the lessons change as my life changes - that's why this film is an icon - God Bless Mike Nichols - a true genius...
Absolutely excellent film making techniques. Love it how Benjamin kisses her before she exhales her smoke. And how she asks him for a hanger, he pulls it out of the closet and hands it to her, only to have her put her coat right back in the closet. Love how he just places his hand on her breast. Love how she shames him into making love by calling him inadequate... and love the last vision we have his the look on her face right as he slams the door, obviously enjoying her victory. Heh!
