@RandomTask3000 I think the syncopation. In the intro, the timp is dead on with the rest of the ensemble on every e minor. in the outro, it is the only instrument (maybe also bass drum?) that is playing exactly in between each of the chords, which sounds wrong
@RandomTask3000 No, I don't, but I've considered buying it just to check the last page against this recording. I have the score for Tromba/Short Ride, because there is a much greater interest in that stuff for me and in relation to my own writing. Yeah, there's no rule against it, but it just honestly sounds like a mistake on the percussionist's part- to me, and to fellow musicians and composers who I've shown this recording to.
@BorisGaquere It's possible, however unlikely that an orchestral timpani player would make a mistake that glaring and they would not do another take. It is inconceivable that the same mistake would show up in two different recordings. I'm sorry I don't see how it could be anything other than deliberate.
@BorisGaquere I wish I did. I've seen it before. There's no rule that says one instrument isn't allowed to deviate from the rest of the group without accompaniment. For that matter, do you have it?
Also, listen to this version at 16:45 /watch?v=nFj9NSh6x90 and you'll find the same rhythm.

I attended the live performance of this piece in March of 2007 at Powell Symphony Hall, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra performed it. The ending of the 1st movement received ENORMOUS applause after it was finished. FANTASTIC piece.
I have the recording of it from iTunes! It is incredible, a must-buy, Robertson and St. Louis really knocked it out of the park with that performance.
Ho Ho, good un!

@RandomTask3000 is the timp really supposed to be off from the rest of the ensemble?
BorisGaquere 6 months ago
@BorisGaquere Are you talking about the syncopation or the accelerando?

@RandomTask3000 Alas, this tiny sliver of hope is my drive to see the score and know once and for all!
