  • I admit I have an unusual view - I don't need to compare his performance to Janet Baker (who I also love, of course) to find what is beautiful about it. The intonation isn't perfect, but neither is that of many well-known opera singers. And I hear much singing of successful singers in the operatic world (including the Met, where I have worked) that is so dull and uninteresting. This has heart, and he has a feel for making music.

My two cents only, of course.....

  • I think it's astonishingly good. My work is in opera, and what I wouldn't give to hear my singers sing with this kind of attention to the musical expression. You can hear him navigating through the song and giving every note his full attention. Really, truly, impressive. He is a true artist.....

  • @scutmorgan52 - I have to disagree. It's Dreadful! I can't believe you actually work in opera if you think this is in any way acceptable. He could at least get it vaguely in tune.

Have a click on the Janet Baker clip and then tell me that this is anything other than a travesty.

  • To those of you who enjoyed this: Run, don't walk, to your doctor and get your ears cleaned out! Seriously, what Mr. Wainwright does to this song borders on criminality. If you doubt what I say, listen to this piece sung by Janet Baker. I am not familiar with Mr. Wainwright's singing, but I presume he has a certain amount of talent: however, I believe he should concentrate on less demanding selections (or maybe take about 50 more singing lessons).

  • yikes.

  • Flamin' 'eck! What in God's name was that??!! YUUUUCK!!

  • Um... I'm glad he likes this repertoire, but I think he should stick to listening to other people do it, quite frankly!

  • "de z'hameaux"? Oops!

  • Love Rufus... but this is not for him... Renee should be singing this.

  • Try the Regine Crespin version.

  • Thanks for posting :)

  • Lovely! I think Ru was quite nervous, clutching his hands together during the first verse but once he 'let them loose', he really nailed this beautiful song! Every rendition is another pearl in his crown :)

    Thanks for posting this!

  • Beautiful! His voice gives me shivers Thank you.
