PUMP IT UP! PUMP IT UP! Me and the kids listened to this til we wore it out! We WUZ doin it! A spectacular gathering of talent rockin it out with Mr. Jones here.
@fitzbaby11 I thought the SNL performance was disappointing. Missing so many people, including McFerrin, Fitzgerald, and Vaughan, three of the most important here.
One of the best songs they composed Mr. Quincy Jones. It's an amazing songwriter and musician. For my generation of musical genius as S. Wonder, S. Clark, M. Davis, and many others. Today, wearing such a band and it's a great pity. When we leave those who have shown musical direction can not see their successors. Brother Quincy thank you for the inspiration.
The most remarkable thing about thing about this funky tune is that it was made with NO musical instruments whatever-just voice and the human body used to make the "instrumental" sounds, perhaps along with various studio amplifications. The genius of Q.Jones, Bobby McFerrin, Al Jarreau, Sid Garret, & Take 6.
The most remarkable thing about thing about this funky tune is that it was made with NO musical instruments whatever-just voice and the human body used to make the "instrumental" sounds. The genius of Q.Jones, Bobby McFerrin, Al Jarreau, Sid Garret, & Take 6.
OMG This takes me back! We need more human being bands. Musicians on the radio these days have lost true sight of what good music is, let alone talent. This was feel good music!
I now have 2 - count 'em - two copies of this CD. One lives at work and one in my car!!! Lotsa current music is great, but this CD has everyone on earth joining QJ!! And what better name for a band but the Human Be-an Band!!! And I want an invite to the next "a cappella party"!!!!
everybody who is anybody is on this album. OMG Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Al Jarreau, Barry White, Al B. Sure, El Debarge, Chaka Khan, Ray Charles, James Ingram, Big Daddy Kane, Tevin Campbell, Patti Austin on and on. It is a collector item for real.
OMG! THis just hit me right now! After owning and listening to this CD for 21 years (1989-2010) and after being a huge Take 6 fan for over 22 Years.. .
I *THINK* We B Doin IT *might* have been the inspiration for Take 6's "I-L-O-V-E YOU" on their second CD. Its the song of Take 6 where they did all the vocal percussion and sound FX similar to We be Doin it!
How fun is this song! Back On The Block was the first good music LP record I bought at 17 ! I hardly knew who Quincy Jones was, I only knew him because of his (truly well deserved ) "fame"...I LOVED and I love the kind of music in this Album!!
ok now, tell me who can put toghether an amazin group of artist an come up with such brillant work except Jones? Love this song! Its featuring Sehiada Garette, Take 6 & Al Jeru...dope as fuck...'we b doin' it'!! love it!!!
this song is amazing. Plain and simple. EPIC. But artistry is not always appreciated. This album was crazy. Definitely influential. I remember the day my mom bought his back in like 89 or something like that at Woolworths lol.. damn remember cassettes and 8tracks? geez
@Jreedhnic1984 seriously crazy an all the dope artist featured was also incrediable!! It was a vast arrangment of artist that was featured on this 'Back on the Block' from Al Jeru, Sarah Vaughn, Ray Charles, Tevin Campbel, Chaka Khan, Take 6, Kool Moe Dee...dawn don't get me started...they sure don't make 'em like this again do they?
a superb collaboration between bobby mc ferrin,Take 6 ,al,jarreau, ella fitzgerald, siedah and quincy jones.all the percussion is made by head scratching and hand claps plus chest beating.genius plus a little synth!!
Great album & tremendous acapella song. I still remember seeing the all star ensemble, which consisted of Siedah Garrett, Al Jareau, Bobby McFerren and a young Tevin Campbell, perform this on SNL. Wish I could find a clip of that somewhere cuz they sounded awesome.
@gmt10k actually my friend you forget....ah...steveland morris[stevie wonder], herbie hancock, wynton marsalis...among others.....mihael was a special ddude but he was not in a vacuum.....a lot of cats were involved to make those projects special...greg phillingaines, etc. quincy jones is atrue musical genius....like a tiger woods of music,...since age 15.........herbie was a child prodigy and played with symphony at age 11...i could go on............God is generous with his blessings
@gmt10k Hey GMT it was "Q" who was the driving force behind MJ's success in the 80's he got some of the best songwriting talent to work on "Off The Wall" and "Thriller"!!!!!
@dal4018 he helped, but a lot of it was mj, i think the collabo as more of a 60/40, with mj being 60 and quincy doing 40 for thriller, but he's still a genius, both of them were, this younger generation needs to know what a genius is, and it's quincy, and all the other old school cats.
@dal4018 Really? I forgot about that album, lol That would explain the difference in sound from one album to the next. Especially Dangerous totally different from Thriller and Bad
@bsbncandey Dangerous wasn't QJ, or MJ. It was Teddy Riley of Guy & later Blackstreet fame. MJ wanted to tap into what was hip & current at the time (youngsters may not know this but it was the ancestor of current R&B & Neo Soul) - New Jack Swing, of which Teddy Riley was the pioneer producer, of the sound/genre. That's why it sounds different to all the others.
Fabulous!!! I can't believe this came out 20 years ago! I was a teenager at the time. Still sounds good to me! In fact let me see if I can find another copy of this!
It still is unbeatable! But what Quincy did with this phenomenal record was after his disappointing release: "Listen Up!" he followed this with another triumphant collaborative release "Handel's Messiah: A Soulful Celebration" (1992), which echos and futhers the feel of "Back on the Block."
YES!! And Q even served as host, man! It was SO cool. I have it on VHS, but just the hour they used to show on Comedy Central, though, not the full 90 minutes from NBC, unfortunately.
Didn't y'all love the "Driving Miss Daisy" sketch with Q as Hoke? I'm laughing just thinking about it...
I was disappointed, however, that some of the performances were lipsynched. Then again, how could you pull together a Q-sized extravaganza like that in less than a week? They did great anyway. Loved it.
Oh yeah! I can still see it in my head-I haven't seen it since it originally aired. But that driving ms daisy sketch was too funny........and the cat they had driving the car was too hilarious. LMAO rite now!
