  • I can not tell you how many times I say "this is my favorite" to every song I hear from Waylon but this one is definately my favorite for the day!! Nobody does this song better than OL' Waylon!!!! Thank you!!!

  • I sure can relate to this one. Great job writing it Kris. Kris said, when Johnny Cash recorded it, it put him in a higher rate to pay the IRS. He said it with tears in his eyes.

  • Waylon said he was one of the first to record KK songs like 'SMCD' not the first.

'Sunday Morning Coming Down' was already released as a single by Ray Stevens in Oct 1969 when Waylon recorded his version.

'Sunday Morning Coming Down' - Waylon recorded Oct 29 1969 RCA studio Nashville. Released on album 'The Taker / Tulsa' 1971.

  • 1966 Kris K worked as a janitor at Columbia Studios not RCA.

By 1969 he was working as a helicopter pilot for a Louisiana firm, Petroleum Helicopters Inter. "I would work a week for PHI, sitting on an oil platform and flying helicopters. Then I'd go back to Nashville and spend a week there pitching songs."

Ray Stevens (Harold Ragsdale) worked at RCA as a studio musician on some of Waylon's early RCA recordings.

  • What a great video

  • i had a lot of sunday mornings like this.god bless waylon i sure miss him.

  • Kris Kristofferson's janitor job was at Columbia Studios in Nashville.

Harold Bradley (Owen's brother) and Brenda Lee recalled the days when Kris Kristofferson worked in the building as a janitor-(Columbia Records purchased the studio in 1962), with Bradley remembering that the musicians would curse the future Country Music Hall of Famer for not keeping the studio coffee pots filled.

"Bad janitor, good writer," Bradley said.

RCA's famed facility known as Studio B was their chief rival.

  • The first to record "Sunday Morning Coming Down" was Ray Stevens.

1969 Monument LP "Have A Little Talk With Myself".

And 45 rpm single.- Sept 1969.

Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down b/w Minority

It was Ray Steven's first single on the country music charts. Charted #55.

Kristofferson recalled how Stevens took a chance on his tune, when he was still an unknown songwriter. "I remember the first time I heard it I had to leave the publishing house and I just sat on the steps and wept."

  • It was not Ray Stevens who first recorded this, if you would have read the description would have known. Kris was working as a janitor at RCA and had just written the song while Waylon was playing around in the studio, Waylon recorded this in 1969, the same day that Kris finished writing it. Johnny Cash had a very big hit with it, but Waylon recorded it before ANYONE else did.

  • where did you get that information exactly? I'm not saying it's wrong, but with regards to charts and documentation, Ray Stevens is shown as the first cut. The whole Janitor story is correct and Kris gave most of the tapes to June, to see if she could get John to look at them.

  • It came directly from Waylon's autobiography, he'd know, he's the first one who got the tape because Kris gave it to HIM.

  • scardybug loved waylon bug singing this. thx for making scardybug happy with this video. 5 ***** plus.

  • WOW! I don't remember ever hearing Waylon do this song before.... He did a great job too. But then I guess I've never heard him sing badly either....Thanks Katie

  • Great video Waylon pictures are excellent Sounds great sung by the best voice country ever had or will have thanks

  • So much heart and soul when Waylon sings it...amazing and thank you so much Katie

  • The Picture at 1:45 is Cowboy Jack Clement...

Waylon is in the lower right corner, but he got cut out...

    Nice song and pictures thought!!

  • I believe that everyone relized that, no one has asked.

  • Hi Katie! you know by now, how much I love Waylon, but must admit that Johnny Cash's version comes very close to Waylon's on this song. tks so much for putting it on you tube.

    kindly, bridget

  • Excellent !

    Quelle belle chanson !

    Quelle voix !

    Quelle émotion !

  • OMG what a beautiful version of this great classic by the MAN we call Waylon ...I sure miss the hell out of my friend God bless you Waylon up there in heaven....Chief

  • Thank you acashfan for sharing this beautiful song!! He sure had a wonderful voice!

  • excellent katie, no one can sing this song like Waylon or Johnny can. wtg. ty for sharing :-)

  • Well, Kris Kristofferson does a pretty good job on it too.

  • Yes, he does do a pretty good job, it's a song he wrote. But that doesn't mean that one is better than the other or anything. It also doesn't cover up the fact that Waylon was the first one to record this one.

Waylon and Kris were probably not a pair that you would call "best friends" either, but a lot of these types claiming that people like Willie were better friends with Waylon is also wrong too, one of the closest friends that Waylon had besides his wife and family was Johnny Cash.

  • Honey, I know it's a Kristofferson penned tune. I was just poking a little fun at LuLupoo because I don't think she knows it. But I'll give you credit for your musical knowledge. I did not know that Waylon recorded

this before Cash. I am one of your subscribers and I hugely enjoy your collection of postings.

  • My favourite version of this song that is for sure thx Kaitie

  • I think with this song in particular, the words speak more then the voices.Though the voices make the song more genuine sounding, wonderful song no matter who sings it.I've heard johnny and kris sing this but never waylon.
