Is there a place I can download these videos? I saw RT the same year or maybe the year before this video was taken and it brings back some good memories. Going to see several of his US dates this/next year. Houston TX and Petaluma Ca
Allen and Lordan both overplayed, because they couldn't get past what Dewar and Isadore had already played, in my little opinion. Trower were best a three-piece, but at the end of the day, Trower is Trower and he's all-f**kin'-right by me :)
Reg Isadore was a more talented drummer than Bill Lordan. Without Isadore, I can't imagine the Bridge of Sighs album sounding as impressive to me as it did. (The production was excellent too, including the sound of the drums.) My guess is that Trower and Dewar didn't like Reg much personally, not that I'd be likely to blame them. Maybe they also thought he overplayed and rushed songs. But he was an exciting drummer.
@Elmore3141 .As you know Trower pics his band ,who he records with and tours with,I love Trower his latest line up to me, is a bore sad to say!!I just feel that Rustee Allen and bill Lordan had so much balls as did Dewar with Lordan and Isadore .Trower picks his own cup of tea
@RIFFRAFFB , Bill let me copy these videos years ago as a favor- he was a real gentleman and I was honored when he visited me for a few days. I think Reg had some problems either with health or? so he was unable to tour. Dewar was so gifted. RT plays the Catalyst in Santa Cruz again next Feb...I'll be there- he rocked last year at that venue- I guess this will be called his "second farewell tour"...check out my vid set to 7 Moons- Bruce Trower elsewhere in my stuff...
Trower wanted to add funk to his music. Thats why Rusty Allen former sly Stone bassist was hired so Jimmy could concentrate more on vocals.Rustee Allen RULES and so does Bil Lordan. They Kicked ass!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jimi had a ton of raw energy, and great imagination. Robin has great tone, all his words ryhme, and great soulful bends/licks. Two different people expressing their souls through music. There is no right or wrong here. Its not an issue of "Who is best?" The issue is- Does the artist express his human experience through music? Does the artist advance the expression of the human condition? Both Robin and Jimi have done this to a great degree.
I'd like to add that Jimi started the genre, and Robin expanded on it. They are different enough to show that Robin isn't a total clone, but has put his own individual stamp on the style as well. A bit more refined than Jimi, but not as explosive. Again, two different humans, one genre of music. Credit for the concept would go to Jimi. I love 'em both, but Trower is more accessible, since he is still here for us to enjoy. Make sure you see him on tour in 2008!
- btw the names have been changed to protect the innocent, fair use and creative commons- maybe everyone could talk about these unknown musicians by firat name only, and songs and albums by pseudonyms of yr choosing and perhaps we can keep the viewing rights a bit longer. Share on, brother. perhaps u heard about the cool new web crawler about to clean out YT. Maybe if we change the names of innocent files they won't get deleted. Get it?
Robin, where do you hear this? and is it likely to apply to trower videos? a load of trower videos got taken off in the past if you remember, it would suck for it to happen again.
Not just rt, babe- all copyrighted material. Viacom forced Google's hand it seems- the news was on "all things considered" on NPR- I think Tuesday- they said a new type of software was gonna clean all the copyrighted stuff off. So I dunno idf this will work- but I thought if enough folks change
names maybe their web crawler can't take all our fun away so soon. I dunno how its sposed to work tho.
ok. i used to have a videodownloader plugin for firefox which used to work- just downloaded them to my disk. now this has stopped working anyone know if any others exist?
I saw Sha-Na-Na there once- did Flash Cadillac and the Continental Kids open the show? or was it just Trower an Sha-Na-Na? U are referring to the 75 Winterland Show in B&W on YT? Can't remember who payed w him...Fuck what a great sound. better, louder, tighter and more full tone than even the first album...2 songs missed getting put up- the tool and me, and In this space...both psudonymous- read the above.
You mean Winterland 75? I was there but have no recollection of Marriot and Bolen...Did onnie Montrose and Gamma maybe play that show? Another possibility is I got there late but just in time to see Trower- I bet thats what happened.
@56BUICKRiviera Hey, 56BuickRiviera, You were right on the money! It WAS Steve Marriott's All-Stars at Winterland with Robin Trower and also, the group, "Thee Image", which was Tommy Bolen's band. Way to go, 56BuickRiviera! That was an awesome show!!!
Sorry, but there is chronology to consider. If Trower had come first he would never have developed the chops, tone and vibe he got. Whether the student surpassed the teacher will always be debatable, but its like saying REM was better than the Byrds. One should never compare artists of different eras- a waste of time. someone is never really greater than his greatest influence. It just is never quite true. Without the influence, the student never would have sounded the way they do.
I don't think so,. These were given me by Bill in return for a favor long ago. I think they may constitute what he had on video. He likes "AmatheaI "the best, with his spotless drum solo- nice stuff. I transferred them to hi-8, then to digital.
Schlaghammer-You can call God anything you want, pilgrim. He is still the best guitarist who ever lived (jimi, not God), and played before 1970, and Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, and Carlos Santana, as well as an English guy bamed Robin, agree with me. Go to Jimi videos to dis him, pal- you will be laughed out of there. .Also- who gives a fuck what we may think on this anyway? No one. So enjoy and drop the competitive, sports oriented, view of music.
I'm just saying as far as it comes to guitar work robin trower is definatly top of the game and for me there is just no way Jimi has the ability to take on Trower. Im not saying you have to like anyone but trower truly is a master.
Robin Trower is one of the greats when i was i kid we really loved this guys playing real musicians playing not this playing in sync crap they have now
GD right! The 'In City Dreams' tour was best I saw. Depending on where. I caught it in Chicago and then in Cinci. One was bad in comparison. PEESE!!!!! Just don't let it burn!
In classical music,Shubert was influenced by Beethoven, and it is said that on his deathbed he said bring me Shubert,he alone has the divine spark.I like to think Jimi would have said the same about Robin. They both display a great lyrical sensitivity as well as the drama and intensity one expects from Rock musicians.
Uhh- peteranal, Jimi rules. Simple as that. Certain folks who just wanna dis Jimi while pretending RT is a greater anything...I love Trower. Obviously. But music is not a competition. Music is about the love. If all u wanna do is fight from an untenable ridiculous position, I ban you. Go dis JH on some of his videos and grow up- you have no argument. Bye.
Nah that peteranal knows exactly what he is talking about while Hendrix was cool he is also very overated as guitar player but Trower just had all the little intricate detail and structure to his music that in which makes him a great player while Jimi he lacked in areas of overall guitar work but a great entertainer.
yes well thats all good but Jimi will always rule w/ me/ If u wanna see an amazingplayer btw, ck out Monte montgomery playing Little Wing acoustc on YT- pretty amazing. And peteranal is gone as he was 2 anal.
well I have seen a lot of Jimi videos and non were really that impressive to be honest the fact of the matter is however Hendrix got so elevated as this so called great player is really flumoxing and for pure musicanship and guitar mechanics Hendrix wouldn't be able to sit in the same room as trower.
If there was no Hendrix, there would be no Trower,he's just another great Jimi imitator better than SRV for sure but Hendrix? He came up w/this style what did Trower invent?
I really don't want you to comment on my texts I don't care who think is better but don't feed me this bullshit and lies. Obviously Hendrix wins because everybody knows his popularity but I'm glad to represent the guy who has immense talent even though he is not as well known and it sucks that such guys get missed.
You're crazy (continuing from my post below). I mean, one or two albums is more than enough to get Trower's whole range. Yeah he was talented, but he was totally walking in Hendrix's footsteps. You can listen to all the albums from Hendrix's short career and see a real evolution that progressed way farther than Trower has in 30 years.
you see the total ignorance of music Hendrix fans seem to have Trower did like Hendrix and was influenced by him but that in no way shape or form means Hendrix was better guitarist in any respect. Trower does not play like Hendrix like at all he may sound like him maybe but that is definatly where comparison stops Trower totally dominates Hendrix's overall knowledge of guitar every which way and out.
Right: Machine Gun vs. Day of the Eagle. Well I can't play either one, in fact, I can't even play 'Polly Wolly Doodle'. But if you're seriously going to argue the merits of Robin Trower vs. Jimi Hendrix, not which one has a song harder to play, but just in general, well....
OK, fair enough. If I can't have an opinion on guitar because I can't play it, then you can't have an opinion on any instrument that you can't play. Nor on any other subject unless you have mastered it. Do you have a view on the Iraq war? Well, unless you've been in the military, by your logic, 'you should keep your mouth shut'. Give us all a break and grow up.
Jimi's best show for me was some moments in the concert he played at Maui in 1970- Hear My Train, Red House, Beginnings, Straight Ahead, Dolly Dagger, Voodoo Chile, Villanova Junction- ther e is video of part of this show on YT... you should get this- it may still only be on boots. I don't want to debate anyway- lets just listen some more. Trower is superb. A new one, "I Climb above the Rooftops" is up now on YT, and a great ""Rock Me Baby" 9 and 1/2 min long...chek it out...
jrwise, you sound like a Van Halen fan. If Triwer isthe Charlie parker of guitar- who is Hendrix? The Roland Kirk, or Miles Davis, of guitar? hmmm. I think of Jimi had lived a couple more years he and Robin Trower would likely jave formed a band. THAT would have been awesome.
Twelve years before you were born, petr anal (if tha IS in fact your name) I was watching Robin Trower play at Winterland.
20 years before you popped up I was a kid listening to Are You Experienced." You got yr view, I got mine. Nothing you can say makes yr opinion more correct than mine. They are both opinions- unshakeable. Hendrix wrote and played in 4 years as much as RT has since.I love them equally-we can agree on this- glad Trower is still with us!
Peter ANAL bassically you are a fucking idiot, if you think playing day of the eagle is harder playing the WHOLE of machine gun, then your more dumb than i thought you were.
THe first chord progression is harder and more musically complex the whole of machine gun. Hendrix can play basic as hell riffs all he wants and put a bunch of fills in there but it isn't going to help Hendrix become a great musician. Now shhh Hendrix needs his rest and to compare him to this masterful muscian which you see here. HA super fast vibrato if you play vibrato it isn't supposed to be fast it is supposd to be thought out super fast you'll end up with a buzzing sound noob.
You fool, vibrato can be used in different ways for different effects, if you start it off wide and slow and gradually build up speed it has a feeling of increased intensity. I can play Day of the eagle easily, got the tab book, but ive tried machine gun a few times and cant get very far. if machine gun is so easy why dont you post a clip of you playing it?
Super fast though thats just not good vibrato. First off don't challenge me unless you have a video of playing day of the eagle. Tabs blah. If you can play machine gun and not day of the eagle you obviously have guitar autism. God I used to play machine gun way back I think I was like nine man I used to love Hendrix until I got older and wiser and found trower and never looked back and glad for it.
Hey turdslinger, you are livin up to yer name. Thats cool- but choose yer battles and consider yr audience too; lets lay off the so-called peter anal. He is only 20 and doesn't know that he doesn't know shit compared to you or me. Also, I am sure he just wants to flame somebody- To need to compare Jimi and Trower is a personal problem- he has no leg to stand on. Let him rant. His position is ridiculous and amounts to a weird idolatry for RT and a strange distaste for the Master. .
Right on Robin- there are many times when i wish i could take back a comment on here, i dont wanna be rude to anyone, but when you see something that is so obviously wrong its hard not to try and fix it.
oh my god dude you are in a fucking fantasy land. I mean obviously you have been brain washed by popular media to such a harsh extent. It really is a shame how naive about music you really are. Acting like you going to fix something. You owned yourself with super fast vibrato and think that Machine gun is a hard song to play. Seriously your opinions are giving me ulcers from all the laughter.
Yeah Hendrix is the master of what oh wow I'm so impressed by a guy that played basic blues progressions with a tint of jazz which he had cover up his average playing with massive amounts of distortion and every new effects pedal out at that time because he knew that that he couldn't compare with people who were already out.
I mean just trying new things doesn't make you a guitar master. Yeah Hendrix sounded different but doesn't make him better than anyone else. Its is very obvious if you look past the distoriton and all that other crap it is a no brainer that Trower is a better guitar player better musical structure,Technique in every aspect, chord work. I mean the list could go on and why Trower is a better player.
I mean and your like is Hendrix's legacy in just four years. Seriously you don't think that Hendrix got as big as he did because he died or that he was promoted like crazy by bigger record labels because they didn't have to pay his wage after he was gone.
At musical validity stand point no doubt that bridge of sighs emcompasses so much more diversity in playing the instrument than all of Hendrix's work combine. However it is a really shame that trower isn't as noticed because was under a smaller label and wasn't as much as a marketable rock star because You say Hendrix is the master and that just makes me glad to be a 20 year old with a sense of finer wine.
To compare Robin & Jimi is, I suppose to be tone deaf. No doubt about Jimi. His history is etched. It's like comparing Dave Brubeck & Lionel Hampton (just lost the rest of the audience)...Robin is the Charlie Parker of the Strat.
Trower never covered ONE Hendrix tune- why? I bet he doesn't want to encourage comparison, but more out of respect and a desire to be original- not the best Jimi clone- who wants to be a clone? Sign here.
He probably didn't copy Hendrix because He already knew that he was head and shoulders better. He is not a Jimi clone whatsoever He is the real complete musician something that Jimi never truly evolved into.
wow- peteranal-there you go again! Robin Trower himself would utterly disagree with you, whereas Jimi, very humble and low self-esteem personally, might agree- his career was much shorter, but he played all kinds of music- RT's bandwidth is narrower by a bit. Rt has had 40 years to dent JH's legend and never even put a ding in it.They are both incomparable- no reason to argue that.
Jimi Hendrix might be more well known and popular but Robin trower is definately a total step up in class in guitar playing. If you think he plays like him you are actually totally wrong. Sounds like him maybe but his playing is way more intricate than Hendrix. Robins chord progressions are out of this world. His vibrato is unmatched and his string stretcing he is with out a doubt a way way way better guitar player than Hendrix.
Yeah he probably would disagree because he influenced him and he likes him but this truly is a case of the student becomes the teacher or whatever you want to call it. HA i'm glad that he never put a ding in Hendrix's legend its nice to have a truly great unique player more under the rader that is 10x better the original. Oh yeah that's not opinion thats a fact.
pathetic by the way how you try to argue popularity and rt bandwith. Lol this song right here involved more diversity in play than Hendrix's entire song catalog.
It really is a shame that you are really that musically ignorant. I mean I'm sure you like both but opinions like that are why truly great players go unoticed for guys that inadvertly sounded different from using drugs.Oh Hendrix plays Basic blues progressions yeah guess who else plays that um blues players and he was not the first to combine the two chuck berry did that first so yeah he might of had some cool hard rock songs but his legend is fickle.
dude this song kicks and rocks the living shit out of machine gun. And of course the guitar technique is just something that Jimi doesn't have in his arsenal. Its good song machine gun though trower is the pure bred between the two.
This song is nothing like machine gun, and much as i love it is nothing on its greatness. I dont know how much you know about guitar, but i know a little bit and machine gun would be a hell of a lot harder to play than this song, and not just because its 4 times the length. Name me one technique of guitar that trower could do and jimi could not.
Well I don't want to get into a battle over what people think is harder to play but if thats what you know about guitar its probably fair to say that it is time to go back and work on the fudamentals. One technique holding a vibrato of a note while changing to and playing a chord while the vibrato is still ringing. I really don't see Hendrix doing slide into notes on his lead play very much if at all.
Yeah I mean Hendrix does have "technique" but I could play with technique and I'm sure you could too. What I meant was more of a perfection of the technique. Trower's vibrato and Sustain probably unmatched and way better than Hendrix and When it comes to Robin Trower things like music structure I mean come on Hendrix just doesn't compare.
I think that as Robin is incredible consistant, it may appear as though his technique is more refined. However if you listen to the best moments of Hendrix's playing, it is clear that he is equally capable of utilising sustain. As for vibrato, I would argue that Hendrix had a superior technique becuase he adapted his vibrato depending on what the song required, whilst Trower would more often stick to his one type of vibrato, admitedly on the very best in the biz.
dude it doesn't appear that way it is way more refined get off the Hendrix kick he is overated. Yeah what was Hendrix's greatest moment Woodstock sloppy and what I guess never utilizing means that he just holding on to it for a rainy day. And please explain this more than one type of vibrato thats just one thing music structure wise Hendrix doesn't hold a candle to Trower.
In albert hall foxy lady, Hendrix used a super wide and super fast vibrato, which i have never heard trower do. As well as that wide vibrato similar to trowers, he also used a more subtle kind more often. I think songs like Izabella from woodstock transcend what Trower has achieved- sure, Hendrix made some mistakes, but the overall result of his playing is more emotional and inspired. The way he builds up his second solo in that song is great.
Also, Hendrix's Rythm playing is more advanced than robins, id like to hear Robin play the Izabella intro! It is quite annoying talking on here because of the 500 character limit! But due to hendrix's massive hands and thumb he could play stuff that Robin could never reach, check out Woodstock improvisation.
um ok please don't ever text again you have said what I needed to here and to be honest I'm sick of the lies or you are not telling lies because you can't comprehend the instrument. Its too bad the popularity of the media world has got to you as well.
I took some purple microdot and saw this tour at Winterland. Their first tour with a very good bass player relieving Dewar of his duties. Eddie Money opened.
Hey guys, think about this for just a moment. Hendrix taught himself on a broom and played a right handed guitar upside down without all the toys out there today. Just IMAGINE the Monster he would have been had he had and played with all those toys. Why everyone insists on comparing musicians is beyond me. Just enjoy them for what they are/ were and yes the great Stevie Ray learned & mastered many of Hendrix's licks. Agreed?
As for Stevie Ray and Hendrix, I saw an interview where Stevie states that many of his riffs were stolen from Hendrix. His words, not mine. Hendrix was truly in a class all his own. The guitar on his first album, in 1967, still boggles the mind. That was 40 years ago!! Hendrix stands alone.
I am not a fan of Hendrix, but he was a great guitar player,I too met Trower in 1987 and got up to the stage before the show and asked him for an autograph and he signed in legitably. He was a very nice ,down to earth fellow,I adore him as a human Being and Love Love Loove his music..
when robin came to north america he brought with him his entire show on the plane... he introduced the 'butterfly' sound system... one of the 1st 4 way sound system... he was very much ahead of his time... I was there as a road manager for the "special guest"
There really is no "comparison" between Hendrix and Trower... they were in their own universe. Yes, I'm sure that Robin was influenced - what true ROCK guitarist wasn't... that's like saying God had no influence over Adam and Eve... just not always completely :-)
as to last 2 comments; hendrix was a lengend beyond compare(short of stevie ray) and paved the way with a new sound. many played a wah-wah nd that was only an aspect of trower's spellbinding workmanship. he was the fastest at the time he began, and along with the amazing clarity with which he played, made him an icon in his own right. they were both reasons we rock today but can't be fairly compared. peace
I don't get the whole "Trower ripped off Hendrix's style" thing. Look at the timeline. Hendrix wasn't really around that long, and Trower had that style while playing with "The Jam" after Procol Harum. I love Hendrix...he's my fav, but Trower stand on his own
Hendrix created his on genre and other guitarists, like Trower, Frank Marino and a few others, fell into this category, although it still was just a variant of his style, it was great music.
I loved this stuff and can remember sitting by my old LP player learning this song, going back and forth,..
I'm sure there are other old school players that remember this method.
one of the damnedest things i ever heard, was stevie ray vaughan who once described robin as being 'derivative' of hendrix....check the record: stevie did a whole BUNCH of jimis songs, robin has a grand-total of ONE common song that he 'covered' by jimi (which wasn't an 'original' of jimis anyway)....'rock me baby', that's IT.
I got to meet Robin at a Soundwarehouse record store in Dallas back in the early 80's off of I-75. I got an autograph which was basically a circle, and he had had a few brews.
I asked him who is biggest influence was and he said B.B. King, very cool indeed.
he DID come before hendrix...he was with procal harum...but he didnt sound like this until AFTER hendrix died...and he claims he never really listened to jimmi all that much...i say bullshit....dont get me wrong,i love trowers playing, but at least say where you got the style from
I have a video of Robin saying that he listened to Jimi just once, and instantly knew that was what he wanted to do on the guitar. I see it as a style, started by Jimi, expanded on by Robin. Thats fair play, just like there are many blues artists, heavy metal artists, etc.
I'm a-lookin' for it, but all I have right now is this quote from the T r o w e r Power website- "I have to say Hendrix is a constant influence on me. I think it's his vibe if you like. That sort of feeds into, not everything, but a lot of what I do on the guitar is coming from his influence. He was a genius as far as I'm concerned. He was a creative genius, not only was he a wonderful player in the technical sense, he was very soulful."
Not completely sure. One account said pneumonia, another said a stroke. He had been ill for quite a while. He died in 2002. He was a tremendous singer.
I think it was a neurological illness similar to MS. He'd been a heavy drinker unfortunately. Together with Paul Rodgers, Jim was one of the finest white blues that ever lived. vocalists
I thought me speakers crapped out again. How could this be in mono?

Saw 'em in 1976 at what was then Grand Valley State College. (now University)
I remember it being in the wintertime w/ lots of snow. The concert was in the domed fieldhouse. (leaking)
Don't recall a 1978 show.. but then again..? (I was going to school out of town at that time)
A good show indeed then too.

I dunno how its sposed to work tho.

hey Robino........remember who was Headlining that night?.........Sha-Na-Na....way to go Bill Graham........most people left after Trower.....
gollomgov 4 years ago
I saw Sha-Na-Na there once- did Flash Cadillac and the Continental Kids open the show? or was it just Trower an Sha-Na-Na? U are referring to the 75 Winterland Show in B&W on YT? Can't remember who payed w him...Fuck what a great sound. better, louder, tighter and more full tone than even the first album...2 songs missed getting put up- the tool and me, and In this space...both psudonymous- read the above.
RobinofSactown 4 years ago
I think it was Steve Marriot & Tommy Bolin opened at Winterland. I have BW stills taken at the show. Trower headlined obviously.

Bye.
RobinofSactown 4 years ago
Nah that peteranal knows exactly what he is talking about while Hendrix was cool he is also very overated as guitar player but Trower just had all the little intricate detail and structure to his music that in which makes him a great player while Jimi he lacked in areas of overall guitar work but a great entertainer.

well I have seen a lot of Jimi videos and non were really that impressive to be honest the fact of the matter is however Hendrix got so elevated as this so called great player is really flumoxing and for pure musicanship and guitar mechanics Hendrix wouldn't be able to sit in the same room as trower.

I really don't want you to comment on my texts I don't care who think is better but don't feed me this bullshit and lies. Obviously Hendrix wins because everybody knows his popularity but I'm glad to represent the guy who has immense talent even though he is not as well known and it sucks that such guys get missed.
peteranal 4 years ago
You're crazy (continuing from my post below). I mean, one or two albums is more than enough to get Trower's whole range. Yeah he was talented, but he was totally walking in Hendrix's footsteps. You can listen to all the albums from Hendrix's short career and see a real evolution that progressed way farther than Trower has in 30 years.
myxztplyx 4 years ago
you see the total ignorance of music Hendrix fans seem to have Trower did like Hendrix and was influenced by him but that in no way shape or form means Hendrix was better guitarist in any respect. Trower does not play like Hendrix like at all he may sound like him maybe but that is definatly where comparison stops Trower totally dominates Hendrix's overall knowledge of guitar every which way and out.
peteranal 4 years ago
Right: Machine Gun vs. Day of the Eagle. Well I can't play either one, in fact, I can't even play 'Polly Wolly Doodle'. But if you're seriously going to argue the merits of Robin Trower vs. Jimi Hendrix, not which one has a song harder to play, but just in general, well....
myxztplyx 4 years ago
If you cant play polly wooly doodle than you should keep you mouth shut on who progressed the evolution of anything about music.
peteranal 4 years ago
OK, fair enough. If I can't have an opinion on guitar because I can't play it, then you can't have an opinion on any instrument that you can't play. Nor on any other subject unless you have mastered it. Do you have a view on the Iraq war? Well, unless you've been in the military, by your logic, 'you should keep your mouth shut'. Give us all a break and grow up.
myxztplyx 4 years ago
Jimi's best show for me was some moments in the concert he played at Maui in 1970- Hear My Train, Red House, Beginnings, Straight Ahead, Dolly Dagger, Voodoo Chile, Villanova Junction- ther e is video of part of this show on YT... you should get this- it may still only be on boots. I don't want to debate anyway- lets just listen some more. Trower is superb. A new one, "I Climb above the Rooftops" is up now on YT, and a great ""Rock Me Baby" 9 and 1/2 min long...chek it out...
RobinofSactown 4 years ago
jrwise, you sound like a Van Halen fan. If Triwer isthe Charlie parker of guitar- who is Hendrix? The Roland Kirk, or Miles Davis, of guitar? hmmm. I think of Jimi had lived a couple more years he and Robin Trower would likely jave formed a band. THAT would have been awesome.
RobinofSactown 4 years ago
Twelve years before you were born, petr anal (if tha IS in fact your name) I was watching Robin Trower play at Winterland.
20 years before you popped up I was a kid listening to Are You Experienced." You got yr view, I got mine. Nothing you can say makes yr opinion more correct than mine. They are both opinions- unshakeable. Hendrix wrote and played in 4 years as much as RT has since.I love them equally-we can agree on this- glad Trower is still with us!

peteranal 4 years ago
Peter ANAL bassically you are a fucking idiot, if you think playing day of the eagle is harder playing the WHOLE of machine gun, then your more dumb than i thought you were.
turdslinger 4 years ago
THe first chord progression is harder and more musically complex the whole of machine gun. Hendrix can play basic as hell riffs all he wants and put a bunch of fills in there but it isn't going to help Hendrix become a great musician. Now shhh Hendrix needs his rest and to compare him to this masterful muscian which you see here. HA super fast vibrato if you play vibrato it isn't supposed to be fast it is supposd to be thought out super fast you'll end up with a buzzing sound noob.
peteranal 4 years ago
You fool, vibrato can be used in different ways for different effects, if you start it off wide and slow and gradually build up speed it has a feeling of increased intensity. I can play Day of the eagle easily, got the tab book, but ive tried machine gun a few times and cant get very far. if machine gun is so easy why dont you post a clip of you playing it?
turdslinger 4 years ago
Super fast though thats just not good vibrato. First off don't challenge me unless you have a video of playing day of the eagle. Tabs blah. If you can play machine gun and not day of the eagle you obviously have guitar autism. God I used to play machine gun way back I think I was like nine man I used to love Hendrix until I got older and wiser and found trower and never looked back and glad for it.
peteranal 4 years ago
Hey turdslinger, you are livin up to yer name. Thats cool- but choose yer battles and consider yr audience too; lets lay off the so-called peter anal. He is only 20 and doesn't know that he doesn't know shit compared to you or me. Also, I am sure he just wants to flame somebody- To need to compare Jimi and Trower is a personal problem- he has no leg to stand on. Let him rant. His position is ridiculous and amounts to a weird idolatry for RT and a strange distaste for the Master. .
RobinofSactown 4 years ago
Right on Robin- there are many times when i wish i could take back a comment on here, i dont wanna be rude to anyone, but when you see something that is so obviously wrong its hard not to try and fix it.
turdslinger 4 years ago
oh my god dude you are in a fucking fantasy land. I mean obviously you have been brain washed by popular media to such a harsh extent. It really is a shame how naive about music you really are. Acting like you going to fix something. You owned yourself with super fast vibrato and think that Machine gun is a hard song to play. Seriously your opinions are giving me ulcers from all the laughter.
peteranal 4 years ago
Yeah Hendrix is the master of what oh wow I'm so impressed by a guy that played basic blues progressions with a tint of jazz which he had cover up his average playing with massive amounts of distortion and every new effects pedal out at that time because he knew that that he couldn't compare with people who were already out.
peteranal 4 years ago
I mean just trying new things doesn't make you a guitar master. Yeah Hendrix sounded different but doesn't make him better than anyone else. Its is very obvious if you look past the distoriton and all that other crap it is a no brainer that Trower is a better guitar player better musical structure,Technique in every aspect, chord work. I mean the list could go on and why Trower is a better player.
peteranal 4 years ago
I mean and your like is Hendrix's legacy in just four years. Seriously you don't think that Hendrix got as big as he did because he died or that he was promoted like crazy by bigger record labels because they didn't have to pay his wage after he was gone.
peteranal 4 years ago

RobinofSactown 4 years ago
Trower never covered ONE Hendrix tune- why? I bet he doesn't want to encourage comparison, but more out of respect and a desire to be original- not the best Jimi clone- who wants to be a clone? Sign here.
RobinofSactown 4 years ago
He probably didn't copy Hendrix because He already knew that he was head and shoulders better. He is not a Jimi clone whatsoever He is the real complete musician something that Jimi never truly evolved into.
peteranal 4 years ago
wow- peteranal-there you go again!
RobinofSactown 4 years ago
Jimi Hendrix might be more well known and popular but Robin trower is definately a total step up in class in guitar playing. If you think he plays like him you are actually totally wrong. Sounds like him maybe but his playing is way more intricate than Hendrix. Robins chord progressions are out of this world. His vibrato is unmatched and his string stretcing he is with out a doubt a way way way better guitar player than Hendrix.
peteranal 4 years ago
Yeah he probably would disagree because he influenced him and he likes him but this truly is a case of the student becomes the teacher or whatever you want to call it. HA i'm glad that he never put a ding in Hendrix's legend its nice to have a truly great unique player more under the rader that is 10x better the original. Oh yeah that's not opinion thats a fact.
peteranal 4 years ago
pathetic by the way how you try to argue popularity and rt bandwith. Lol this song right here involved more diversity in play than Hendrix's entire song catalog.
peteranal 4 years ago
It really is a shame that you are really that musically ignorant. I mean I'm sure you like both but opinions like that are why truly great players go unoticed for guys that inadvertly sounded different from using drugs.Oh Hendrix plays Basic blues progressions yeah guess who else plays that um blues players and he was not the first to combine the two chuck berry did that first so yeah he might of had some cool hard rock songs but his legend is fickle.
peteranal 4 years ago
Comeone man, when hendrix was off he was off, but when he was on he was ON. listen the machine gun band of gypseys again.
turdslinger 4 years ago
dude this song kicks and rocks the living shit out of machine gun. And of course the guitar technique is just something that Jimi doesn't have in his arsenal. Its good song machine gun though trower is the pure bred between the two.
peteranal 4 years ago
This song is nothing like machine gun, and much as i love it is nothing on its greatness. I dont know how much you know about guitar, but i know a little bit and machine gun would be a hell of a lot harder to play than this song, and not just because its 4 times the length. Name me one technique of guitar that trower could do and jimi could not.
turdslinger 4 years ago
Well I don't want to get into a battle over what people think is harder to play but if thats what you know about guitar its probably fair to say that it is time to go back and work on the fudamentals. One technique holding a vibrato of a note while changing to and playing a chord while the vibrato is still ringing. I really don't see Hendrix doing slide into notes on his lead play very much if at all.
peteranal 4 years ago
Yeah I mean Hendrix does have "technique" but I could play with technique and I'm sure you could too. What I meant was more of a perfection of the technique. Trower's vibrato and Sustain probably unmatched and way better than Hendrix and When it comes to Robin Trower things like music structure I mean come on Hendrix just doesn't compare.
peteranal 4 years ago
I think that as Robin is incredible consistant, it may appear as though his technique is more refined. However if you listen to the best moments of Hendrix's playing, it is clear that he is equally capable of utilising sustain. As for vibrato, I would argue that Hendrix had a superior technique becuase he adapted his vibrato depending on what the song required, whilst Trower would more often stick to his one type of vibrato, admitedly on the very best in the biz.
turdslinger 4 years ago
dude it doesn't appear that way it is way more refined get off the Hendrix kick he is overated. Yeah what was Hendrix's greatest moment Woodstock sloppy and what I guess never utilizing means that he just holding on to it for a rainy day. And please explain this more than one type of vibrato thats just one thing music structure wise Hendrix doesn't hold a candle to Trower.
peteranal 4 years ago
In albert hall foxy lady, Hendrix used a super wide and super fast vibrato, which i have never heard trower do. As well as that wide vibrato similar to trowers, he also used a more subtle kind more often. I think songs like Izabella from woodstock transcend what Trower has achieved- sure, Hendrix made some mistakes, but the overall result of his playing is more emotional and inspired. The way he builds up his second solo in that song is great.
turdslinger 4 years ago
Also, Hendrix's Rythm playing is more advanced than robins, id like to hear Robin play the Izabella intro! It is quite annoying talking on here because of the 500 character limit! But due to hendrix's massive hands and thumb he could play stuff that Robin could never reach, check out Woodstock improvisation.
turdslinger 4 years ago
um ok please don't ever text again you have said what I needed to here and to be honest I'm sick of the lies or you are not telling lies because you can't comprehend the instrument. Its too bad the popularity of the media world has got to you as well.

Agreed?
alphadrummer1 4 years ago
As for Stevie Ray and Hendrix, I saw an interview where Stevie states that many of his riffs were stolen from Hendrix. His words, not mine. Hendrix was truly in a class all his own. The guitar on his first album, in 1967, still boggles the mind. That was 40 years ago!! Hendrix stands alone.

There really is no "comparison" between Hendrix and Trower... they were in their own universe. Yes, I'm sure that Robin was influenced - what true ROCK guitarist wasn't... that's like saying God had no influence over Adam and Eve... just not always completely :-)
mmsmarjar 4 years ago
as to last 2 comments; hendrix was a lengend beyond compare(short of stevie ray) and paved the way with a new sound. many played a wah-wah nd that was only an aspect of trower's spellbinding workmanship. he was the fastest at the time he began, and along with the amazing clarity with which he played, made him an icon in his own right. they were both reasons we rock today but can't be fairly compared. peace

I don't get the whole "Trower ripped off Hendrix's style" thing. Look at the timeline. Hendrix wasn't really around that long, and Trower had that style while playing with "The Jam" after Procol Harum. I love Hendrix...he's my fav, but Trower stand on his own
TommySixGun 4 years ago
They were both products of thier time, like rhoads and halen. It just happened. No one is ripping anyone off here, just defining an era
careypeak23 4 years ago
Hendrix created his on genre and other guitarists, like Trower, Frank Marino and a few others, fell into this category, although it still was just a variant of his style, it was great music.
I loved this stuff and can remember sitting by my old LP player learning this song, going back and forth,..
I'm sure there are other old school players that remember this method.
One of my favorite Trower tunes.

one of the damnedest things i ever heard, was stevie ray vaughan who once described robin as being 'derivative' of hendrix....check the record: stevie did a whole BUNCH of jimis songs, robin has a grand-total of ONE common song that he 'covered' by jimi (which wasn't an 'original' of jimis anyway)....'rock me baby', that's IT.

I got to meet Robin at a Soundwarehouse record store in Dallas back in the early 80's off of I-75. I got an autograph which was basically a circle, and he had had a few brews.
I asked him who is biggest influence was and he said B.B. King, very cool indeed.

I have a video of Robin saying that he listened to Jimi just once, and instantly knew that was what he wanted to do on the guitar. I see it as a style, started by Jimi, expanded on by Robin. Thats fair play, just like there are many blues artists, heavy metal artists, etc.
