I'm SO glad they will repeat this concert this year in cologne, got my tickets the moment I knew about it. I don't even care for the rest of the songs, I'll be there just for this one.
Wow...!! Is this what it took to put the music in Squaresoft games back in the days?! No wonder it was so amazing... They really put effort into their soundtracks - that's for sure
At first I thought orchestrating video game soundtracks was sort of a gimmick, but the SNES RPG's I've played seriously have some of the most amazing music written. And yet, it seems most people will never get to hear them. :(
I'm glad to hear these guys putting this out there.
@TheOneartist It is a gimmick, but know that some of the most talented composers I've heard have created music for games. Some do both, like Harry Gregson-Williams (Metal Gear Solid)
I like the sound of the ostinato played pizzicato at 4:51, but I'm not a big fan of the way the principal violin articulated the melody a few seconds later. Flute had it right, though, and I liked his articulation at 5:59. Overall, this is a great arrangement and some of the greatest game music ever composed.
@rakninja You'd think by taking the two best SNES RPG makers and merging them, they'd come out with the best games. Unfortunately, the opposite case.
Besides the first Kingdom Hearts, they haven't come out with anything worthwhile. Just milking the Mana and Final Fantasy series with subpar sequels. All about CGI graphics and scanty teenage anime girls instead of real plot and music.
I have to give them credit, though, for re-releasing Chrono Trigger with the translation it deserves.
I always knew at that time when I played this game that the music was very very special indeed. It´s truely awesome to see a `real life` performance like his, based on a relatively simple nintendo 16-bit game.
from what I remember, the secret of mana soundtrack was written by some pure genius japanese composer.... I mean EVERY song on the soundtrack is mind blowing and fits with the mood of that particular point of the game PERFECTLY.
I am eternally devoted to Nobuo Uematsu, but as a matter of fact, I think Fear of the Heavens, by Hiroki Kikuta, is the single most beautiful melody ever written for a video game. It might have come from heaven; it sounds of the garden before the beginning of the world, of the holy places beyond thought and time, where evil things do not go.
2:25 - auditory orgasm, what an awesome build up! Secret of Mana really is something else, not just for its fantastic gameplay, but that beautiful soundtrack, its stuck with me for around 12 years since I first played the game - and no doubt will remain on my mind for years to come!
Wow! How did the composer.. the effects in the beginning were so beautiful! How did she get the effect of waves and rain??? I'm in complete awe right now
Hands down, best VG music of all time! If I was at this live performance I would have crapped myself from all the joy it would have brought me. Would have lost all control.
metroid 2 and 3, secret of mana, terranigma, chrono trigger, final fantasy 6(3 for europa), zelda 3 and 4, lufia 2, many other r not just products for sale but real artworks. compared with many todays games this artworks r like 3 earlyer episodes of starwars vs teletubbies.
No words to describe how this is magnificent.. My favorite music game of all time played like this. I'm shivering from the feeling it brings me.. Almost in tears.
OMG They're calling Flammie at 8:31 !!!!!! I didn't notice the Flammie drum the first time I listened to this!!!!! O_O The memories. The chills. The utter BLISS.
I have to wonder how many people who hear this stuff (as a performer or audience member) have never played these games, never even heard of them, then they were part of this performance. And they got interested in the game(s) to see what kind of game had such enchanting music. It's about time that the best of the Square repertoire becomes available on record instead of the tinkety-tink of the midis that we first learned the music from.
does anyone else notice that the music for super nintendo games blows all other systems out of the water in terms of pure orchestration? seriously, this, zelda, chrono trigger? all the scores are unparalleled in later systems, with the exception of the final fantasy series.
I definitely love FF musics, Secret of Mana, Zelda, castlevania IV and so on on the SNES... But you should not forgot great games music on the megadrive like the phantasy star series
the theme of altered beat, "last dungeon" wonder boy, the revenge of the shinobi full tracks and especially "terrible beat" and "long distance", sword of vermillion "last city", phantasy star III "main theme" "overworld" (the whole phantasy star II, III and IV have amazing soundtracks).
Of course this is personal tastes and keep in mind when listening to theme what they could be if they were plaid in a symphonic way

@shiloushilou Indeed. I agree. There are some good orchestrated music that has on the whole series of Phantasy Star; and I am not talking about the pso series lol
@trashedinaz hey you can not said thaht! many other song of game music are beautiful with an orchestre. see "the vidéo games lives" ot the cd Symphonic phantasy. anyway Secret of mana and Chrono are épic.
@trashedinaz Not just blows them out of the water in a few games, but consistently every single game has at least one memorable song. Do you know why? Because frankly the people making the games didn't make them for the money, but as an art. They actually cared about their games.
@jackattack923 sadly no one cares about anything but zombies and shooters and shooting zombies nowadays. on the subject of art though i've always remembered the theme music from... what was that game parasite eve or something like that? can't be asked to google it but it was a cool game. something about mitchondria. had this beautiful piano intro theme.
@trashedinaz I guess back then things were different, only 16 bit, so the music was an important factor in making it come to life. And they really made it count.
I was just searching around for secret of mana music since I started to play it again after a long while and wow I'm just blown away by this. Just plain incredible.
I still remember the moment when the ruby diadem dropped at the fortress, but i failed getting out of it to save the game... Guess i should try once again :)

That was crazy, absolutely crazy. Amazing. And the really weird thing that gets me, is that as a kid....this is how the music sounded? @leukrota You got it wrong about the musicians not paying attention to the conductor ;) Because they do ;) They actually use their peripheral sight, and if you look closely you can see them lift their gaze from time to time towards the conductor. Keep in mind that before the public performance there have been countless hours of rehearsal; so a good deal of things have already been timed and planned.

This is... absolutely amazing. I think I'm going to buy three of these. One for me, and one for my brother and one for my sister for their birthday. I'm blown away, this is essentially my childhood, orchestrated, and put onto a CD
I am absolutely awestruck! That was some powerful stuff right there! I'm not a hardcore fan of secret of mana but Ive just recently started playing it on my iPhone, awesome game so far....
Why a dictator? Why not a benevolent ruler that shares the magic and awe inspiring awesemeness that is awesome videogame music like these for all your followers to bask in? I would.
Add this to the list of games I wish I'd played as a kid, but at least I did get around to playing it. My kids will be sure to have this included in their library! NONE OF THIS 3D HD FPS TRASH.
Just beautiful...... I remember playing SOM back in the day the things that stuck with the was it's soundtrack and somber story. Chrono Trigger's sound track stays on my mind for some reason too....
@hecklovetch That is so so well-put and perfectly captures my feelings, too. People should respect video games they would a movie or play--so much craft goes into many of them, and it's obvious with games like Secret of Mana. How many people have left comments here regarding their nostalgia? And the music is so incredibly moving, could stand up on its own. Anyway I agree. XD
Oddly, I didn't like it. I didn't found the mood of SoM in these tracks...

XD

On the left there ist another concert piano. The piano you see is the one for the solo pianist which isn't playing in the secret of mana suite!
