It's 2 feet longer, about 16 tons heavier than the A3 design and has a slightly lower coal and water capacity. So yes it is larger but only by a very tiny amount (not noticeable to the naked eye unless you were close up and had a tape measure).
Bare in mine when comparing the A1 & A3 design that Tornado was built with different design techniques and such and hence you can't use original A1 specs to make a comparison to 4472 (an A3).
why couldn't they just restore a locmotive in need of restoration. instead of building a new one. it would of been much nicer to see a loco from the dump brought to life again
no , a man purchesed a fully working A1 peppercorn for around £40 { around £100,00 today} and he missed every payment and the engine was cut up instead. im sure which one it was
This is the A1/A3 reincarnate but with all the latest technology.Looks like 4472 and will go even better..almost a clone of the greatest of British locomotives ever to hit the manganese.(rails)
well as reported on the BBC and Railway publications 4472 won't be back on the main line until mid-2010 at best. So the possibility of confusion between 4472 & 60163 among some people cannot be ruled out.
Wow, I'm still in shock that a NEW A1 Peppecron was built! Maybe they can build a new A1/A3 like Flying Scotsman? Eh, thats just whishful thinking though
well if the reports on the condition of 4472 are to be believed they probably will have to build a new A3. What would be nice is (if the cash is available) would be to build some A3's with detail variations so these "purists" are happy. For me I think the LNER Apple Green livery, single chimney and corridor tender (as 4472 was as I remember her when I was a child in the 1980's) but that's me. Each to their own!
As 60163 is using latest technology (within reason) for steam powered locomotion has there been any predictions as to possible life-span of boiler and other running gear.Maintenance will be necessary as is the case with any mechanical device but i guess it will be less than the original A1/A3/A4 types etc. When 4472 was here in Australia some years ago it set some records for continuous running (not speed) due to flat and straight terrain and of course extra water was carried behind in tankers.
I liked it in workshop grey but this paint work looks superb..too good to get dirty actually.Well done again to all those involved.Must have cost a pretty penny but worth every cent.
I think it's great that folks like you take the time to upload mobile phone footage (of the A1 or anything else) - I'd rather see it like this on youtube than not see it at all! :D

Sorry chaps, it's B.R. green for me please - even so, 60163 is a great achievement for which all concerned deserve great credit.

Because sometimes it's easier to build from scratch.
Besides, most of the worthwhile locomotives have been restored. At some point you're going to have build them from scratch if you want anymore.
I mean there are 20 Bulleid Pacifics still around so why do you need to restore a rusty burnt out one when you could build something different?

All A1s were scrapped in the 1960's

The last Peppercorn A1 had been removed from service in 1966 or something like that...and none of them were kept for display...:-(

I helped out on the project for about 4 years in the earlier part os this decade, and I'm really impressed with what the trust has now.

Grey was interesting but that's a superb paint job chaps. Nice one. Well done.

great video. They did a fairley quick turn around on this loco. when are the name plates being fitted?
can't wait to see this back in steam again, though I do prefer the grey livery it carried but this does look nice as well.
5* plus fav!

She had no name plates last weekend (27 Dec). Paint still doesn't seem fully hardened, despite temperature inside NRM.
Looks absolutely stunning!

Just goes to show that we can still build magnificent enginering pieces
Truely magnificent;; infact beautiful
I can remember seeing A1 Peppercorns on the ECML at Newark as a young boy in the late 50's and early 60's

does look awesome, quality of footage infuriatingly poor but thanks to who ever took the trouble...

Sorry for the poor quality, You can only do so much on the spur of the moment on a mobile phone.
