thanks for the responses.insightful.love the sgi. as well as the nichiren shu and sho shu, tendai all the wonderful branches of the Buddhas family tree and its many colorful leaves.still i bristle at the factioning of the Nichiren schools.we only copied our brothers over seas by drawing dividing lines here too...but maybe its better this way? for now i will chant for peace my own and for others in solitude.

Excise any superfluous traditions created by those who have made careers of positioning themselves between the disciples ('Bodhisattvas of the Earth') and the eternal Buddha.

The tradition of Nichiren Buddhism is 'hon nin myo' - the future determined by the actions we take now, not constantly looking over our shoulder at what has gone before. We're practising a living religion, not running a museum.

The longterm success of your sect will depend on the degree to which you share the heart of the Buddha and to which you can inspire your disciples to do the same. Well, it's not "lyrics". They are chantinga sutra from buddhist teachings. This one, The Lotus Sutra talks about the equality of all people. It would be odd for kamikaze pilots to chant about equality before fighting in a war based on supremacy ideals.

The pilots were being fed obsolete samurai codes taken out of context, and being told to apply them to themselves. This is interesting in the fact that most of the samurai codes were written by the samurai after they were defunct, for nostalgia.

Actually, Toda, the leader of this religion at the time, was jailed during WW2 for opposing the militaristic practices of the government in favor of promoting peace.

The government were selling dyed-in patriotism while this religion preached that all people were equal. After rustling to many feathers, they sent the president of the organization to jail for thought crimes
