While watching this video, I didnt realize so many people had commented on it, so perhaps what I have to say has already been said.
Mostly I am trying to direct myself towards the people who put this video up (jag antar att det är labinot från AiP) but I'd be happy if other albanians from Kosovo or the kosovan diaspora read it too. Perhaps some serbian sympathizers would try to understand what I'm trying to say as well.
I think the first part of the video was quite touching; it was far more humane than the pro-war propaganda I was expecting, but the second half or so was quite an embaressment to all anti-rasist albanians out there, myself included.
Being raised and grown up in the diaspora my parents have often tried teaching me about the albanian history, and especially the modern wars have been heavily coloured by bias, meaning my parents have given a view on it which sounds good for albanian sympathizers, but which isn't factually correct.
The most common misconception about the Kosovo war, was that Serbians wanted to kill Albanians completely unprovocedly. What counts as provocation is of course very subjective, but when Kosovo wanted to have the same status as other republics in Yugoslavia and riots broke out in '81, albanians broke orthodox churches and architecture, some serbians were killed and it all resulted in 4000 serbs leaving kosovo for central Serbia.
The people who had to leave their homes were not necessarily politicians, nor were they responsible for the Albanians' situation, still they had to suffer.
Was this enough to justify the Serbian government's surpression of Albanians, and even enough to go into a war? Absolutely not! But the serbians who had to leave suddenly felt very distant from the Albanians.
Their misery was blamed on them, and the Albanians themselvs didn't help creating more understanding as they themselves were in a similar fashion distancing themselves from Serbians by trying to identify with other albanians as if they would be one single human organism, and not individuals.
If you have a hard time catching my drift consider the Balkan mentality: if civil serbians protesting the kosovan government would break mosques and kill a few albanians, Kosovo would approach choosing an albanian equivalent of Milosevic any day, even without the history albanians have with serbians. In fact, my greatest fear about Kosovo lies behind the unbelievingly high tolerance for utter racism and nationality. All balkan people seem to have the word "Inat" engraved in their forhead!
Because of the high acceptance for nationality, few people even care to see if the legends of what happened during the war were even true. Every year when I went to Kosovo as a kid, someone would tell me about how the Serbs had bombed one of the houses in my dad's village.Even my parents claimed this to be fact, still, no one had actually been left in the village to see it happen, or actually knew it happened. In hindsight, I have instead learnt that the serbians actually never dropped any bombs
Furthermore, NATO, which was supposed to help Kosovo, instead killed 50 people in an attack against an albanian refugee camp, and they similarly targeted many questionable objects such as serbian refugee camps, and the chinese embassy in Serbia (wtf?). Serbian factories owned by the government were also bombed, which raises the question of what motifs NATO really had. Were they out in a war against socialism or one against opressors?
There are also rumours (idk if it has been verified) of that the KLA killed albanian kosovans which didn't agree to going into war. Wether this is true or not, the point I am essentially trying to convey is that nothing is entirely good or bad. I love Rrugova for his peaceful mindset, but perhaps more Kosovans would be dead today if the idea of war wasn't introduced by the KLA. The KLA wasn't entirely good or bad, nor was NATO or the Serbians.
I think it is a great shame that a few Albanians I know here in Sweden are so OK with racist comments about Serbians and the racist mindset of many kosovo albanians, when on the other hand they condemn the politics of Sverigedemokraterna, which in reality is based on the same racism seen in Kosovo, heck, the entire Balkans!
