Lots of 4WD road vehicles. Ferdinand Porsche's electric car was 4WD - in 1899, decades before Audi and the rest. Spyker and Benz followed in the early 1900s. Jensen, in 1966, were the first to use

4WD in a decent sports car, with the Interceptor. Audi's claim to fame is that it brought 4WD into the mainstream of performance rallying / road driving, with the Quattro. To many of us of a certain vintage, Audi's finest work.

That is not true, for example Subaru released the Subaru Leone 4WD Station Wagon in 1972. Audi started building the Audi Quattro in 1980.

Subaru's 4x4 was exactly that--4x4, vs. the AWD of the Quattro. But your point is well taken--Jensen had the 1st performance-oriented AWD car, though they were hand-built for only 5 years (330 units)

@quattroKKK ich komm aus ingolstadt und kenne einige Audi Sport Mechaniker aus dieser Zeit - keiner hat den Sport quattro Evo1 S1 genannt selbst der S1 wurde Anfangs nur intern so bezeichnet in allen Büchern aus dieser Zeit ist beim Sport quattro E2 (S1) nur vom Sport quattro die Rede oder vom E2. Gibt auch Original Datenblätter von Audi Sport auf der Webseite von ig-audisport... Meistens wurde er intern sowieso nur "der Kurze" genannt.
