@wmdc1230 Calling Tom Paxton a gay wad on a Tom Paxton video? That's a paddlin. Calling Tom Paxton a gay wad anyway? That's a paddlin. Saying Tom Paxton is a horrible singer? Oh you better belive that's a paddlin!
I've known Tom, off and on, for many years, even worked a show or two with him, and we've had our share of good conversations. What you see with him on stage is exactly what you see off stage. He's one of the truly great performers who is actually real, and comfortable enough to show that to anybody willing to see it. A treasure, indeed!
he Federal National Mortgage Association (FNMA) (OTCBB: FNMA), commonly known as Fannie Mae, was set up as a stockholder-owned corporation chartered by Congress in 1968 as a government-sponsored enterprise (GSE), but founded in 1938 during the Great Depression. cont...
The corporation's purpose is to expand the secondary mortgage market by securitizing mortgages in the form of mortgage-backed securities (MBS),[3] allowing lenders to reinvest their assets into more lending and in effect increasing the number of lenders in the mortgage market by reducing the reliance on thrifts
@jazzmanpete Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (like AIG) are the names of big Banking organisations in the U.S. that when the banking crash happened got bailed out by the U.S. government. A truly ridiculous amount was given to them. So of course Tom said "changing my name to Fannie Mae" means he'll get his bailout too.
Thank you for this, but I find it sad that the same song - albeit lyrically updated - is just as relevant today as it was thirty years ago. Its almost heartbreaking.
Actually, it IS heartbreaking.
Not only is it a brilliant song, its proving to be timeless.
Probably not a tune you would ever hear on the NBC Nightly News (owned by G.E.). Wait until the Washington crooks get really desperate, then we will see some real nasty business.
I first became aware of Tom while a Progressive Rock DJ in the late 1960s when I played "Singing the Viet Nam Potluck Blues" among others. Thanks for posting, Gere
Don't feel bad about it, Tom. They get all the money but you get all the love. History has a different fate in mind for you than it does for them, you can be sure. (Sorry you can't take that to the bank...)
Originally written as "I'm changing my name to Chrystler...I will tell the finance broker, What you did for Iaccoca would be perfectly acceptable to me!" I see Tom is staying timely! I laughed like crazy when I saw him perform the first version at the time... He is such a gift!
Just getting to appreciate this generation of wisdom...Tom, Arlo, Pete, Bob, thank you and your message is still relevent 50 years after you started with your remarkable talents. Thank you muchly
This guy just gets better..just brilliant..been a fan of Tom's for a couple of decades..and more...thanks for putting this up here..thanks Tom love you.
Loved it! But then like Renee I've loved Tom's music for a very long time. "Ramblin' Boy" was one of the first songs I ever learned, with my Sears and Roebuck $25,.00 guitar in 1965. He's still got the magic!
I've scoured the 'net looking for them. Try "Changing my Name to Chrysler" (written in the '70s, this is an update) or buy a fake book that contains it. The music industry has been cracking down on tablature the same way they did on downloading songs.
Yay for Tom Paxton! He is one of my favorite folk singers of all-time. Our local (liberal) representative sent a link to this video to all her constituents! :>
Bad economy? Think again. That was soured by the Democrats and their Fannie Mae friends who insisted on giving loans to poor people who would never be able to pay back their loans. Republicans have some of the blame, but don't blame the Republicans entirely for this one. The Democrats are mostly to blame, including your Senate pals Barney Frank, Chuck Schumer, Chris Dodd, and Barack Obama (and others) who put America in this problem. They all kissed the ass of Fannie Mae lobbyists for years.
just an observation from an outsider... but the dems may have started the ball rolling (there will be blame-throwing and buck-passing on that one for decades, I'm sure), but did the republicans do anything in the last 8 years to *stop* it?
I hate to get involved in a private matter but from the other side of the ocean it seems that the rich who voted Bush got all they deserved. I feel sorry for the "little people" in the good old US of A and how it's dragged down the rest of us. Truly America sneezes and the whole world catches a cold. Maybe Obama has too heavy a burden to carry in the form of the unrealistic hopes and expectations BUT at least you now have a leader who can inspire rather than the grubby little man you had before.
Now you have me thinking about your brilliant "I'm Changing My Name to Chrystler". I just love your modification here, for it demonstrates the folk song process as it pertains to the concerns of the day.
You've inspired me to spread this call into action...you've really hit the mark on this one!
What a treat it is to find you on youtube - your ascerbic wit and inate ability to just hit the spot running is a joy!! May you continue doing what you do best - chillingly astute observations coupled with truly memorable tunes!! Live long and happy
Capitalism isn't working! Time for a real change. The lessons from the 1930s is that we need mass movements to push government into protecting jobs and welfare. Don't wait for Obama...
I love it, both versions are good, being an Aussie the names still do not mean that much , perhaps tom could do an Aussie version. Talking about Aussie versions I would love an Aussie version of "This land is Your land"
What a thrill to see you've joined us here on YouTube. I first saw you do the Chrysler version of this song on PBS in the early 80's and have carried the tune in my head ever since. Well, I WORK for Chrysler now, (Toledo Jeep plant), and times with the company are on the downturn again. Do you think you could give us a modern Chrysler version? I would think there would be plenty of inspiration considering the amount of mis-management involved. God bless you for the music you've given us, Tom.
Sadly, as artists and songwriters get old, they lose their creativity.
Looks like Tom didn't get that memo.
