If you ask me, a real DJ is anyone who doesn't press a button to beatmatch. I don't really think it matters what you use, as long as YOU are the one doing the mixing, not the software. If you use software, use it as a guide, a last resort, to slightly ENHANCE your mix, don't rely on it fully. However, vinyl is the rawest of the raw. If you can mix vinyl, you can mix anything. While I am a bit of a "vinyl purist", I do respect my fellow DJ, and I don't think the medium determines your DJ "rank".
thats real talk i been cutting and scratching since 77 half the records u cant replace u cant replace half the worn records and cant buy most new ones so i welcome the change my cdx actually improves my technics with records help is when a dj needs serato and tractor

bro i use the cdx and i love them man, there's always haters out there no matter what you use. if they ain't complaining about what your mixing with they complain about some other stupid things. props to you and all djs that are there doing their grind and loving music for what it is and that is keeping the crowd rocking. if you rock the mic, rock the one's and two's and smile and peeps when they smile and not be a prick about it then your ok in my book homie.
A REAL DJ is anyone that can put on music and keep people entertained. Whether your using an NS7, a mixer and two vinyl turntables or even an iPod with an app it doesnt matter. If people are enjoying what you're playing. Your not a DJ to make things as difficult as possible, your a DJ to play music that people enjoy. 99% of the time the audience doesnt care what your using as long as music is playing, and thats what matters.
OMG a REAL Dj can use turntables and beat match, rather it be on vinyl, serato, tractor, etc. The numark cdx is very similar to real vinyl FYI because Ive had one. Just because you know how to press start on an iPod / controller and get people to dance on the dance floor doesnt classify you as a DJ. Im not hating but im just stating the facts. Look where djing came from, 2 turntables, mixer, and vinyl. AGAIN just because u can keep people on the dance floor with music DOES NOT mean you a DJ
Omfg who gives a shit if the sound came out of an egg carton attached to 2 metal cans. It's the music that matters, anyone with a mentality above the age of 5 can work that out.
a dj is someone that can keep the party going regardless of what they are using. I like to use vinyls but I dont judge djs based on what they use if they can keep the party going then theyve done there job.
I consider djing with CDJs or with software like tractor (not traktor scratch) cheating. Anything that does the beat matching for you is killing DJing as an art form.
I personally spin all Vinyl for many reasons. 1. It makes you really know and love your music. 2. It sounds better through any decent soundsystem 3. You mix by listening not by looking at a computer 4. You watch the crowd your rocking instead of a computer screen. 5. All you need is your needles headphones and records. 6. You don't need to screw up someones set by unpluggin everything to plug in your serrato box. 7. People won't dare to request anything! Who buys lady gaga wax?!?!?!
totally, all real djs use both now, and since the technics are no more, yes panasonic has discontinued the technics turntable, it will be moving into the pioneer cd2000 and pioneer 2000 mixer. for me i dislike the pioneer cd players. an active plater makes all the differance. since i play dnb and learned to speed cue vinyl im having a hard time going digital. serato is my friend.
its not the equipment that makes you a dj, if you can please the crowd, and thats that. use whatever you want, if being a cdj, using software is cheating, then using a a disc and or vinyl and software is also cheating because its not a real band!!!! if you wanna go there, who gives a shit, love technology dont hate, and let the music play!!! ns7fx and V7's are dope from numark! you can also use vinyl still and software to beat match, just because you dont do it the hardway doesnt mean its fake.
For all you quote-unquote experts out there... If you aren't on the radio, you're not a "real" dj at all. The original function of a Disc Jockey was an on-air personality who played records for the radio stations. So if you wanna go there... any of you who don't know anything about radio production AREN'T REAL DJ'S... you're just playing music and scratching up records.

Learn to fucking Beatmatch. On Cdj you only have to press one fucking button to beatmatch (Sinc) so stfu, i only play Vinyl Hudson Mohawke and Flying lotus and all that and thats fucking hard to beatmatch on turntable, so learn to use turntables...
DJ = Disc Jockey CDJ = Compact Disc Josckey PLEASE don't joke! It's not a game or a moda! Deejaying it's an art & a disciple! In the hiphop music it's a must use vinyls & turnatables in the others musical genres i don't think can change somethin'.....
so, the equipment doesnt make the party, the DJ makes the party. those would have been better words, probably what you meant to, but i think we all got the point. love your vids man.
Err... to all the "Experts" here, facts: 1st of all, Analog has & always will have a better sound then Digital. If you don't know this then maybe you chose the wrong profession? 2nd, mixing with Vinyl is a completely different Art & feel than mixing with CD's or other digital audio sources. Now personally I mix with vinyl since day one. I tried loads of other approaches, including CD but I prefer Vinyl. I agree that it's up to the Dj to make the party but I've even seen so called Dj's use Ipods?
iv been using vinyl for years and recently i got on a team we have five djs n im the only one with vinyl n iv seen first hand vinyl or cds dont matter if u kan dj u can dj period..'by ear'. also serato i use it becus some traks i kant get on vinyl idk if ppl dont kno but serato comes with vinyls basikly spinning vinyl with a laptop great vid btw abs. dats exactly how its sed
-djFiend(iPartyproductions)
btw the blindfold is proly to show he spins by ear...
To beginners i cannot stress enough to learn on vinyls, as you dont have the privilages of a bpm counter or wave forms or any sort of stuff like that. But then again people can use whatever they enjoy mixin on. If a dj uses a laptop at a gig but everybody's on there feet who gives a shit what they're using its all about the music. Not the equipment. Peace.
I still use vinyl, for three reasons. First of all, when it comes to just listening to music, vinyl sounds better. Secondly, I do a lot scratching and juggling, so I have to mark off a lot of different spots on my records with stickers, and this can't be done with CDs or Serato. Lastly, shelves filled with vinyl look fucking cool in my apartment.
I started DJing 15 years back on a pair of SL1210s, then took a break of a few years and now i'm back on M-Audio Torq. People have mentioned the possible use of the BPM counters but tell the truth cos i learned on vinyl i rely on the pitch controllers and don't notice the BPM counters.
Youre right about that Cdjs are very similar to vinyl, just that most cdjs have bpm counters and only some vinyl players have. Now even pioneer plyers often fail at counting the beats, which makes it kind of unreliable, so mixing on cdjs is very much mixing by ear. Serato shows very precise and reliable bpm. Nobody should ever rely on any kind of infrmation they get. no matter if its Virtual Dj, Serato, CDJs or any bpm counter. because no software will get it more precise then your own ears.
I use mainly midi and a laptop. I really believe its now taking over cds, but now most of the djs still use cd/vinyl. There are some years between the introduction and the main use with these things.
I love the accessability of a midi controller. Its very modern but I feel like something is missing. I also use a turntable and I buy records and i love it! I still think beat matching is a basic skill and using vinyl has the feeling.
But cds changed the way djs mix and it opened new doors for ev
Lot of people here seem to know what they're doing.......Vague question...How do you choose tracks? Do you buy albums made to mix, mix your favs? How does that decision come about? Let's say a party wants to hear all breakbeat, Where do you get the tracks and how do you choose them? Sorry if that just sounds stupid....
this topic has been done millions of time... this is equivalent to producers that used Fruity Loops vs MPCs. And like 9th Wonder said...its not the program or tool...its what you can do with it. If you have a fetish for vinyl...get technics 1200's so that you can go back in forth between vinyl and mp3s via software like virtual dj or serato.
Beat matching is pretty much where I draw the line. If your equipment is doing it for you....that's not DJing. You have to at least match up the tempos manually. If you think about it, that's really the only way that this art form can be preserved.
hey bro ,,im hardcore vynil, still ,and i agree with your comments that you still need to no when to mixx etc,,,,unfortunatly the computer has fukd alot of the dj world as far as the artist can no longer make millions because of free downloads etc and then closing record stores and evrthing connected to it,,, its a big topic ,,, to talk about ,,so respect bto your passion djnedroy oldskool vynil warrior to the end cant beat the sound of vynil OLDSKOOLKING DJNEDROY NEW ZEALAND OG 81
i started off djing with dj softwares used in conjunction with controllers. that way i had auto-sync which syncs one track to the other. thats totally "cheating" if you put it that way, but the result is whats important. now i use a full pioneer 400K setup, and i totally love it. what i miss the most about the dj softs is the waveform. because i dont consider it normal that you should remember each track. where the crescendo is, where it breaks etc. thats why you have a waveform to see it.
@LogoMproductions I don't judge anyone for what they use, To each his own. But one thing I used to love about buying records was listening to the tracks until I learned them. I didn't take long, just a couple of times. Even though i'm more digital now, I still listen to all the tracks I get just so I can know my music better. It's a habit for me. Regarding seeing the changes coming, you can do that with records also by reading the grooves.
@AbstractSteeloShow most music [especially dance music] sticks to a predictable structure, the drop is obvious when its coming lots of the time. but i do agree, if you're carrying you're setup round then the vinyl box would make it a mission.
and even though i mix with vinyl i have Traktor too, VINYLS ARE EXPENSIVE. a dnb record [tune on each side] costs 5.99 plus postage here in the UK. so the guys being haters are obviously rich pricks
@LogoMproductions a real DJ starts off with mixing by ear. If you can't do that, you're dead in the water. Let's say you're asked to spin at a party without all of your fancy software and you can't use your ears to transition if your life depended on it...then what? Are you going to run home and pick up your PC software and whatnot and bring it back to the party? i Haven't tried CDJ's but I can imagine it's like spinning vinyl. As far as serato, same as vinyl..if you don't rely on the waveforms.
@LcancerA seriously, im not dead in the water. i started off with software and controllers because i didnt have the money for more. i brought my controller and laptop to parties i knew i would need to spin. i just couldnt afford anything else. theoretically i was practicing to mix by ear on my controller aswell because its also got jog wheels for bending and pitchslider for speed too. But its also got that sync button. there are actually many tracks that the auto sync does not analyze properly.
@LogoMproductions I know this is old and you have progressed since this post, bu think of it this way, "the guitar(ACOUSTIC) then the development of the electric guitar. To play a guitar you don't have to start with the acoustic! I've been a DeeJay longer than some people have been alive, I've been DeeJayin since the 70's. Iuse it all. Of cousre no software can caputure all the facets of LP's but with the CDX at least you can get an idea of what the table feels like. Best advice use it all!
fuck all the haters abstract i seen djs on vynil that fucking suck a real dj is not the dj that uses vynil but the one that could keep people on the dance floor i use cdj's ...and fuck wow06 you calling him lazy than why dont you just take all your gear walking and carrying everything to the party ,im pretty sure you use a car is called technology google it you piece of shit like he said a the equipment wont make the dj
@salfirebird92 I don't trip on anyone. It's just their opinion. Most people don't know I learned and used vinyl for a long ass time. It is what it is. I'm surprised this video still gets so many comments on it. lol
The final product is all the matters in the end. If one cannot hear the difference. This said, if one can spin vinyl and make the final at least equally as good as a cd/computer mix, the experience and fullfillment is irreplaceable. It's like building your house, modifying a car, putting together whatever physical elements with creative conception. IMHO, I would bet anything a cd/comp person would feel 100X more gratification if they produced even a single successful track/mix using vinyl.
@MrSicariohiphop blablablablablabla. If you were here you would have seen what I did, but oh well. This video wasn't meant to show anything, just a topic of discussion.
Man,I definately agree with you on everything man. you just have to know that, there's going to always be critics out there, people who's insecure in what they do & people who know nothing about music or dj'ing that always have something to say. Your not going to really here a dj bashing another dj unless his mixing is poor. Its all about your creativity, I believe there's no such thing as " your not a real dj because you don't use vinyl", Bro keep doing your thing & keep up the good work.
I feel like the argument is basically stringing from this...say you have a weightlifter who trained his whole life to be the best in the world. But then somebody else comes along who is just as good but did it in only a few years using steroids. While both are really great you can say the other "cheated" in his way of getting their. Thats exactly how I see this argument.
I have decided to get into Dj but I am not exactly sure how to use vinyl where to get it and the music etc. If somebody could point me to a good video I wouldn't have to go to Mp3's or Cd's
I use/d all three, Vinyl, CDJ's, and Programs (midi keyboard controlled). And NOTHING COMPARES TO SPINNING VINYL!!! Anyone can use a program or cdj's but not all can use vinyl. There is a mastery in it.
@salfirebird92 Indeed there is. But (for me) it is so much more difficult to fly through records than to hit cue points. I'm talking about turntablism, beat juggling ,and scratching on vinyl, not on Serato or Cdj's. It is much more difficult and rewarding in my opinion. I've seen people do that on Serato and cdj's and fumble on records. That is why I believe true vinyl is the best.
I don't really care what one uses to mix. I cannot knock something I have done and sometimes still do.
@Batman83 I get what your saying, I have much respect for dj's that use vinyl with no type of software but also got respect for any dj that keeps people dancing no matter what they're using
Djing is progressing and vinyl is dying out! I don't know if vinyl will ever be gone or not but it will be rear enough in the near future IMO. Some people prefer vinyl and some prefer cdjs. For someone to say that you're a fake dj because you didn't start from the origins of djin bla bla bla... if you start driving in a honda civic and not in a 1820 mercedez benz does that mean you'll never be a real driver?
I put in the blood and sweat in the Tobacco Fields of Eastern NC in the 80's to buy my 1st set of 1200's I carried the 8 crates of records and I have put in the practice time.I have the right to call out any person for his dj skillz. I don't knock CD Decks -- they are lighter but I prefer vinyl. The Technics 1200's are still the True, Original DJ Standard.
Its a difference between someone DJing and Someone Being a DJ
I've been DJing for 12 years. I started on vinyl. I'm very big on the fact that If U didn't start on vinyl you can't consider urself a "real" dj. Now that's not to say that I have anything against using CDJs or software (I'm on Torq now) but I DO think that In order to progress to using Serato/Torq etc. ITS A MUST that you take enough pride in your craft as a DJ to start from its origins...Vinyl.
Now I'm not gonna lie, Cratedigging is the most fun part of Djing though. IMO
hey bro i tottla agree with u ive seen alot of djs who use serato scratch live .... and its time code i agree that its just as hard that why i do all digital i have all my music on an external harddrive.... so screw them it all good dont sweat the small shit...
If you live in the desert you can order vinyl online. Cd's sound like crap. The true dj's dig not Down load. Only wedding dj's and strip club dj's use cd's. Your style sucks. And no one respects it unless your 12yrs old and djing at a mall.
I don't care if people play with their laptop, iPod, XBox or even with their handy.... if you make dj-ing with your CD, you are not far away of using mp3 files..then you are not far away of using your ipod..and iPod and your handy does count in same category. A real DJ should use Vinyl, because there is nothing more broing then a DJ who is working with CD's,iPod, MAC!! SAVE the vinyl, it's our bible and our dj culture
@deniskneifeld So by your definition, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Dj Premier, DJ Kool Herc, DJ Red Alert, Funkmaster Flex, Jermaine Dupri, & DJ AM are not "Real DJs" ???
I know for a fact that they ALL use Serato. Does that make them not REAL DJS?
@iigunzent It makes them not authentic, even if they are famous djs and really know how to spin records. Vinyl is the way to go and all that CD/mp3/laptop spinning comes from the industrie who want to make products. Since you have 100.000 tracks in 1 case, the real groove get lost, because people play more and more same music.. I just say a guy who is spinning cd's is not the same dj league like vinyl djs. A vinyl also sounds deeper then any digital music...
@deniskneifeld That doesn't make them "Not Authentic" They do the same things the same way. Only difference is that instead of digging in crates at their gigs and having to ship records ahead to their gigs (risking damage, loss, & not being able to use their records for 3-4 days while they're bing shipped) they have them at their hands in their laptop. I guarantee I could play my vinyl and my digital and u wouldn't be able to hear the difference. Esp. in a club. I spin BOTH every night.
You dont go to a club and not get up to dance because the Dj is using Cdj's
AS long as he or she is playing good beats who cares, also trying to find alot of stuff on vinyl is hard using, serato is like using cdjs all ya music is stored on a computer and played using time coded vinyl,
the point of djing is to make the crowd dance and have you ever seen any crowd stop dancing just cuz u dont use vinyls? i dont think so, the point is playing good music, no mater if your using vinyl or CDs...oh and good luck playing new music using vinyl, i mean, go ahead and find lady gaga for example on vinyl records...
Do people that play electric guitars automatically become shit guitar players because they don't use an acoustic guitar? same thing, it all comes down to practice.
To those people saying that using CDJ's takes all the work out of DJ'ing, I have one thing to say... so what? why start a fire with flint and sticks if they've invented the lighter?
Well I have to say this..... It is important to learn on vinyl...
I'm still a begginer a little under 2 years.... Hiphop (the classics and shit) I started learning how to mix on serato first..... It IMPEDED my skill... once I put my nose to the grinder (or whatever the saying is) and really tried to learn on vinyl it changed EVERYTHING.....
Im not close to perfect yet.. but I know If I want to be called a GRANDMASTER I have to learn it on vinyl....
@DJJ3M : that wont happen to most people? One good hit from a solar flare can wipe out EVERYTHING on earth.... It will happen to everyone....
Time code is COOL! I like it and use it.... But vinyl rules.... most anti vinyl cats are just haters.... and most of those haters are cats that were too lazy to learn the real way to mix.... I LEARNED MIXING ON TIMECODE.. at least I thought I learned how to mix till I went to vinyl.... Vinyl is GRANDMASTER STYLE..
@DJJ3M : mehh... Analog vinyl is the king. I like time code but it dont beat analog...
Analog is the FUTURE.. Yes the future... Its the present now and future but specifically distant future as I already discussed.... NO POWER NEEDED TO ROCK THE HOUSE....
You may LOL and Im COOL WITH THAT. as long as you tell your friends. "This Loadfaster guy is crazy! Talking about rockin the house when the power goes out." I want a discussion on that. So dog me.. its cool cause its funny! but Im serious!
@Loadfaster hmm ok :P ill stick to my methods u stick to urs... tbh i guess its just what u feel is better for urself not what every one else sais is good XD
I'm a DJ, I learned to do everything on vinyl. I switched to a professional Numark NS7 Controller a few months ago. The guy in the video is right. There's absolutely nothing wrong with using CDJs or digital equipment. Go to a club, disco or big gig and take a look at the booth. You'll see Pioneer CDJs and rarely some SL1200s. Stop whining and get stuff done instead of shoving your opinions down peoples throats. CDJs still require alot of skill to mix decently. Trust me on that one.
If I go to a club Ill also see the type of people that dont know good music
people trying to pick up chicks and only play popular music
IF you did a mix on your NS7 but did the exact same mix on VINYL and I was watching I know Im gonna be more impressed about the vinyl. In my heart I know Im gonna care more if it was done on vinyl.
So the ignorant club hedz wont care. But what if they actually knew how it worked? They would care to. We are now basing technology on the ignorance of the masses.
WOW06 is a tool. Vinyl is gangster but digital stuff is great too and allows for alot more creativity. I personally learned on vinyl but now rock digital stuff because mixing or scratching two songs just doesnt cut it anymore. If you want to be a DJ learn vinyl and appreciate the roots then go off and enjoy using what you like. Its all about the music not about your personal agenda or your cocky @ss attitude. Abstract Steelo this is the first time I watched one of your vids and your right on man
@ChrisCorsaMusic : i agree fully... LEARN VINYL FIRST. Understand what all the hubub is all about then go learn wehatever... personally though I have no intrest in CDJ shit...
Anyone against vinyl is a fool.... Vinyl is the best still.... Vinyl has the best advatage of all other formats... I dont need electricity to hear it...
When the bombs go off and the lights and power goes out and your little memory stick cant work youll be glad that there were vinyl cats out there.. Ill still be able to rock the house...
Do they pay you to do what you do? (And I don't mean just free beer)
Do some of them hire you again?
Then you are a DJ.
Period.
I can't do on CD what I can do on vinyl but I can perform the function of a DJ with CDs. I just can't create my full club mix vibe like I can on my vinyl.
@wow06 You sound like the kind of dumb ass that complains about everything. Diggin' is cool, but it doesn't make you a better dj. I'm pretty sure you don't dj, but if you do you're probably not that good anyway. You probably think you're true to the scene and represent what's real. So stop bitchin' about everything and start doing shit. If you want to change shit get off of youtube and out of your parents house and do stuff.
@AbstractSteeloShow : BOOO... Im sorry. comming from a person who started learning how to mix on timecoded... pure vinyl is the best coolest and the standard of what makes a Deejay.... I think most people who hate on vinyl are lazy cats who want the fame of a deejay...
Im not saying you have to do it vinyl.. what Im saying is there is a MASSIVE learning curve between vinyl and all other formats...
I can never call myself a grand master until I can rock the house on vinyl..
@wow06 just switched to mp3 because vinyl is to damn expensive. i use timecoded technics and count my beats but use a mixer with effect. so in your eyes am i a real or fake dj?
@DUDEmethaar: as long as you can mix vinyl then your cool. but if you went to midi cdjs or timecode cause you cant mix vinyl then you I personally think its BS...
@Loadfaster mmmmh... agreed but i do use tmecodes because vinyl is to expensive, and the music i normally mix isn't brought out on vinyl. and besides you can achieve so much more with timecodes, as long as it is in the love for the music.........
@wow06 so do you walk every where even to gigs please u use a car or a horse carriage pretty sure a car ...my point is technology get with it plus i bet you suck even on vinyl . fuck the haters cdj vinyl serato a dj makes people dance and keeps them on the dancefloor the people dancing dont give a flying fuck what your using as long ass your playing good only stupid mother fuckers like you that hate on other dj's biatch im outs
I will consider myself as a beginner, and I started out using Virtual DJ, and then progressed to using Traktor. However, I get a lot of flac for using a software based DJ software since it's considered as cheating. People tell me that I'm not a real DJ when I use software. Personally, I think it doesn't matter what you use. In my opinion, a real DJ gets his/her audience to dance on the dance floor, by whatever means necessary. If he can't do that, then he truly isn't a real DJ.
hmmm???? all the best djs ive seen are useing only pioneer cdjs and denons i thought vinyl was dead with the pros haha , yeah dont listen to the people stuck in the past they die out soon :))
its not the format or the media its the dj its how you mix computers are just another tool djs will soon realtze you have to be there working the mixer and the decks be they cdjs midi controllers timecodes or vinyl its the skill and imagination of the dj that matters i use all kinds of gear i dont use auto beatmatch but i will take advantage of effects loops and other stuff to enhance my performance it all comes back to control and performance
and also if you have a certain kind of CDJ you can save all you audio files right onto you cdj's internal memory..that way you dont need any cd's at all.....i honestly dont think there is any difference in using cdj's from vinyl aside from the fact that there is a cue button......so what im saying is...the cueing process is a little easier cuz you dont need to keep rewinding to the beginning all the time....asides from just mixing....so in my opinion CDJ'S ALL THE WAY!!!!
also i like cdj's cuz you have alot more options to expand you knowledge of dj'ing with via FX's, hot cues, loops ect......i first started dj'ing with vinyls and to be honest i loved it....but i found cdj's had more to offer me personally use CDJ's only for the same fact that you use them for....its alot easier to carry music around...
IMO "real" DJ's use music. Whatever you use to control it be it Midi, timecode, cd, or vinyl. Like he said at the end of the video. As long as you know what you and your equipment can do and can rock a crowd than you are a DJ.
a learned on vinyl but am sick of havin dusty vinyl plus it costs £12 a record with 6 to 8 tracks so cdjs are 20 times better more smarter and experianced djs use cdjs coz they dont have dusty records and broken needles and you need to have skill to mix with cdjs also its more fun anoll got more effects and its a greater feeling and not as boaring simple as that. and am a scratch dj and am goin to by cdjs denon s3700 so a can use vinyl feel but use digital decks.
little by little vinyl has been returning to stores... I've noticed that last year. I guess electronica is making a great impact. Thanks for clearing this question up for me.
ahh man your hella talking the truth .. and well i be mixing with dual cd players but now i got lazy mxing with vurtal dj ... i also learned with vinyl but i rather mx with vinyl it feels very aswome and very classic
@djerbe So you mean DJ'ing is all about mixing and beatmatching? Selecting the right tracks, for the right people, at the right mood, at the right club, at the right time is more what is about...Make people jump
Im a Dj and i say it dosent matter what you use. its all about how you use them. a real Dj has the skill to use both CDJ and Vinyl, turntables and mixers are just the tools that a Dj uses to mix
I'm not a Dj, but a listener who respects them for how they make the crowd move. Most big time djs now are usually just pushing buttons and turning knobs, and I could care less as long as it sounds good. And for those Djs that say only real djs use vinyl, I bet your one of the few that still stands on the corner next to the public telephone waiting for a call or making a call because you haven't advanced with the times and bought yourself a cell phone.
What I think makes a real DJ is being able to beat match without looking at your DJ software such as Serato and looking at the wave form or the BPM and matching them like the new DJ's that are starting.
Also, you have to know how to scratch, I'm not talking about having skills like DJ Qbert, but knowing how and when to throw a scratch. For instance, don't don't ever scratch at a Club, but only when it's appropriate while your playing at a club or party.
I'm with you on that also, about not staring at your pc to match up waves. Not because i'm a hater, but because it will help you in the long run. Scratching is an art in itself, the basics come in handy. Most definitely you should love all music.
Sup Abstract and Steelo.... you guys are the shittt!!!!
I been DJ'ing since I was 17 years old in High School, how I'm 27......(FYI) I fell in love with DJ'ing since the 7th grade, 1994. (Rebel years hahaha) I was using records for a while, but In 2006 I went into Serato because I got tired of caring my Milk Crates everywhere. However, I still carry records just in case something weird goes wrong.
I still have all my records and don't ever plan to sell. Great Memories using them!!!
The only DJs I don't consider to be real are the ones that use IPODS or strictly computers to play the music. Where's the showmanship in that? We're supposed to be entertainers not computer programmers. The IPOD thing is the equavalent of me bringing a couple of walkmens to a party back in the day. That's wack!!!!! But if your good I'll acknowledge that. I won't call you a DJ though. Maybe a music jock or human juke box. Just my opinion.
HEY DOG!! ARE you still using the cdx and any problems yet mine are still kicking ass and i use them about 5 HRs per day no kidding man!! later hit it up ABSTRACT
I'm not sure if i answered you already, but one of mine are still cool. The other, i think i messed up by leaning on it too much because it doesn't spin as smooth.

Pauliticiann 3 months ago
OMG a REAL Dj can use turntables and beat match, rather it be on vinyl, serato, tractor, etc. The numark cdx is very similar to real vinyl FYI because Ive had one. Just because you know how to press start on an iPod / controller and get people to dance on the dance floor doesnt classify you as a DJ. Im not hating but im just stating the facts. Look where djing came from, 2 turntables, mixer, and vinyl. AGAIN just because u can keep people on the dance floor with music DOES NOT mean you a DJ

I recommend to use vinyls for everyone.. just because its easier to beatmatch.. better when pitchbending.. Vinyl FTW !!

Omfg who gives a shit if the sound came out of an egg carton attached to 2 metal cans. It's the music that matters, anyone with a mentality above the age of 5 can work that out.

a dj is someone that can keep the party going regardless of what they are using. I like to use vinyls but I dont judge djs based on what they use if they can keep the party going then theyve done there job.
zpot420 7 months ago
I consider djing with CDJs or with software like tractor (not traktor scratch) cheating. Anything that does the beat matching for you is killing DJing as an art form.
GROMSF 7 months ago
I spin real wax or use a DVS. Anything else is OK for someone else. I am not into CDJs. The players and the CD format are uninspiring.
GROMSF 7 months ago
I personally spin all Vinyl for many reasons. 1. It makes you really know and love your music. 2. It sounds better through any decent soundsystem 3. You mix by listening not by looking at a computer 4. You watch the crowd your rocking instead of a computer screen. 5. All you need is your needles headphones and records. 6. You don't need to screw up someones set by unpluggin everything to plug in your serrato box. 7. People won't dare to request anything! Who buys lady gaga wax?!?!?!

totally, all real djs use both now, and since the technics are no more, yes panasonic has discontinued the technics turntable, it will be moving into the pioneer cd2000 and pioneer 2000 mixer. for me i dislike the pioneer cd players. an active plater makes all the differance. since i play dnb and learned to speed cue vinyl im having a hard time going digital. serato is my friend.
tbbokun 9 months ago
its not the equipment that makes you a dj, if you can please the crowd, and thats that. use whatever you want, if being a cdj, using software is cheating, then using a a disc and or vinyl and software is also cheating because its not a real band!!!! if you wanna go there, who gives a shit, love technology dont hate, and let the music play!!! ns7fx and V7's are dope from numark! you can also use vinyl still and software to beat match, just because you dont do it the hardway doesnt mean its fake.

real guitarists can only use acoustic.

a pianist can only use an acoustic piano.
a real singer cant use a microphone.

Err... to all the "Experts" here, facts: 1st of all, Analog has & always will have a better sound then Digital.

To beginners i cannot stress enough to learn on vinyls, as you dont have the privilages of a bpm counter or wave forms or any sort of stuff like that. But then again people can use whatever they enjoy mixin on. If a dj uses a laptop at a gig but everybody's on there feet who gives a shit what they're using its all about the music. Not the equipment. Peace.
mctechno1234 1 year ago
I still use vinyl, for three reasons. First of all, when it comes to just listening to music, vinyl sounds better. Secondly, I do a lot scratching and juggling, so I have to mark off a lot of different spots on my records with stickers, and this can't be done with CDs or Serato. Lastly, shelves filled with vinyl look fucking cool in my apartment.

I started DJing 15 years back on a pair of SL1210s, then took a break of a few years and now i'm back on M-Audio Torq. People have mentioned the possible use of the BPM counters but tell the truth cos i learned on vinyl i rely on the pitch controllers and don't notice the BPM counters.

tbbokun 9 months ago
Youre right about that Cdjs are very similar to vinyl, just that most cdjs have bpm counters and only some vinyl players have. Now even pioneer plyers often fail at counting the beats, which makes it kind of unreliable, so mixing on cdjs is very much mixing by ear. Serato shows very precise and reliable bpm. Nobody should ever rely on any kind of infrmation they get. no matter if its Virtual Dj, Serato, CDJs or any bpm counter. because no software will get it more precise then your own ears.
LogoMproductions 1 year ago
I use mainly midi and a laptop. I really believe its now taking over cds, but now most of the djs still use cd/vinyl. There are some years between the introduction and the main use with these things.
I love the accessability of a midi controller. Its very modern but I feel like something is missing. I also use a turntable and I buy records and i love it! I still think beat matching is a basic skill and using vinyl has the feeling.
But cds changed the way djs mix and it opened new doors for ev

I was a vinyl freak/DJ for a long time.. but downloads were so cheap and convenient i bought a cheap dual mp3 unit to run alongside my setup.
I then got asked to do a quite big gig and the other djs were using mix of vinyl, cds and memory sticks.
Serato was hooked up and i was totally blown away! I got through my set with only my pen drive in the end! Best of both worlds imo.

Entreprenoobur 1 year ago
this topic has been done millions of time... this is equivalent to producers that used Fruity Loops vs MPCs. And like 9th Wonder said...its not the program or tool...its what you can do with it. If you have a fetish for vinyl...get technics 1200's so that you can go back in forth between vinyl and mp3s via software like virtual dj or serato.
djmrnelson 1 year ago
Beat matching is pretty much where I draw the line. If your equipment is doing it for you....that's not DJing. You have to at least match up the tempos manually. If you think about it, that's really the only way that this art form can be preserved.

i started off djing with dj softwares used in conjunction with controllers. that way i had auto-sync which syncs one track to the other. thats totally "cheating" if you put it that way, but the result is whats important. now i use a full pioneer 400K setup, and i totally love it. what i miss the most about the dj softs is the waveform. because i dont consider it normal that you should remember each track. where the crescendo is, where it breaks etc. thats why you have a waveform to see it.
LogoMproductions 1 year ago
@LogoMproductions I don't judge anyone for what they use, To each his own. But one thing I used to love about buying records was listening to the tracks until I learned them. I didn't take long, just a couple of times. Even though i'm more digital now, I still listen to all the tracks I get just so I can know my music better. It's a habit for me. Regarding seeing the changes coming, you can do that with records also by reading the grooves.
AbstractSteeloShow 1 year ago 4
@AbstractSteeloShow most music [especially dance music] sticks to a predictable structure, the drop is obvious when its coming lots of the time. but i do agree, if you're carrying you're setup round then the vinyl box would make it a mission.
and even though i mix with vinyl i have Traktor too, VINYLS ARE EXPENSIVE. a dnb record [tune on each side] costs 5.99 plus postage here in the UK. so the guys being haters are obviously rich pricks
manfork 1 year ago
@LogoMproductions a real DJ starts off with mixing by ear. If you can't do that, you're dead in the water. Let's say you're asked to spin at a party without all of your fancy software and you can't use your ears to transition if your life depended on it...then what? Are you going to run home and pick up your PC software and whatnot and bring it back to the party? i Haven't tried CDJ's but I can imagine it's like spinning vinyl. As far as serato, same as vinyl..if you don't rely on the waveforms.
LcancerA 1 year ago

Batman83 1 year ago
@Batman83 i agree with you but it wont make you a better dj just because you use vinyl even serato or cdjs take skills on there on way
salfirebird92 1 year ago
@salfirebird92 Indeed there is. But (for me) it is so much more difficult to fly through records than to hit cue points. I'm talking about turntablism, beat juggling ,and scratching on vinyl, not on Serato or Cdj's. It is much more difficult and rewarding in my opinion. I've seen people do that on Serato and cdj's and fumble on records. That is why I believe true vinyl is the best.
I don't really care what one uses to mix. I cannot knock something I have done and sometimes still do.
Batman83 1 year ago

Djing is progressing and vinyl is dying out! I don't know if vinyl will ever be gone or not but it will be rear enough in the near future IMO. Some people prefer vinyl and some prefer cdjs. I don't knock CD Decks -- they are lighter but I prefer vinyl. The Technics 1200's are still the True, Original DJ Standard.
Its a difference between someone DJing and Someone Being a DJ
Every DJ at least owns a set.

IMO

question: "Do "real" dj's only use vinyl?"
answer: If they are real, yes!!
SAVE the vinyl, it's our bible and our dj culture
deniskneifeld 1 year ago
@deniskneifeld So by your definition, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Dj Premier, DJ Kool Herc, DJ Red Alert, Funkmaster Flex, Jermaine Dupri, & DJ AM are not "Real DJs" ???
I know for a fact that they ALL use Serato. Does that make them not REAL DJS?
iigunzent 1 year ago
@iigunzent It makes them not authentic, even if they are famous djs and really know how to spin records. Vinyl is the way to go and all that CD/mp3/laptop spinning comes from the industrie who want to make products. Since you have 100.000 tracks in 1 case, the real groove get lost, because people play more and more same music.. I just say a guy who is spinning cd's is not the same dj league like vinyl djs. A vinyl also sounds deeper then any digital music...
deniskneifeld 1 year ago
@deniskneifeld That doesn't make them "Not Authentic" They do the same things the same way. Only difference is that instead of digging in crates at their gigs and having to ship records ahead to their gigs (risking damage, loss, & not being able to use their records for 3-4 days while they're bing shipped) they have them at their hands in their laptop. I guarantee I could play my vinyl and my digital and u wouldn't be able to hear the difference. Esp. in a club. I spin BOTH every night.
iigunzent 1 year ago
I agree a Dj is a Dj
You dont go to a club and not get up to dance because the Dj is using Cdj's
AS long as he or she is playing good beats who cares, also trying to find alot of stuff on vinyl is hard using, serato is like using cdjs all ya music is stored on a computer and played using time coded vinyl,
As long as its good its good

@DJJ3M : what happens when the lights go out? Or a solar flare wipes out anything on a hardrive or magnetic strip?
Vinyl will last a post apolcolyptic catastrophy.... Ill still be rockin the house on my gramaphone (yes I own one FOR THIS VERY REASON)...
Loadfaster 1 year ago
@Loadfaster dude O_o that wont even happen to most people. unless u r a dopey twat. XD so no.... time code vinyl does own good day sir.
DJJ3M 1 year ago
@DJJ3M : that wont happen to most people? One good hit from a solar flare can wipe out EVERYTHING on earth.... It will happen to everyone....
Time code is COOL! I like it and use it.... But vinyl rules.... most anti vinyl cats are just haters.... and most of those haters are cats that were too lazy to learn the real way to mix.... I LEARNED MIXING ON TIMECODE.. at least I thought I learned how to mix till I went to vinyl.... Vinyl is GRANDMASTER STYLE..
Loadfaster 1 year ago

DJDoctor95 1 year ago
If I go to a club Ill also see the type of people that dont know good music
people trying to pick up chicks and only play popular music
IF you did a mix on your NS7 but did the exact same mix on VINYL and I was watching I know Im gonna be more impressed about the vinyl. In my heart I know Im gonna care more if it was done on vinyl.
So the ignorant club hedz wont care. But what if they actually knew how it worked? They would care to. We are now basing technology on the ignorance of the masses.
Loadfaster 1 year ago
WOW06 is a tool. Vinyl is gangster but digital stuff is great too and allows for alot more creativity. I personally learned on vinyl but now rock digital stuff because mixing or scratching two songs just doesnt cut it anymore. If you want to be a DJ learn vinyl and appreciate the roots then go off and enjoy using what you like. Its all about the music not about your personal agenda or your cocky @ss attitude. Abstract Steelo this is the first time I watched one of your vids and your right on man

@ghettobrown209 : Vinyl is stone age? bullshit..
Ill still be able to rock the house...

to beginners DO NOT BEGIN with CDJS get Technics Turntables
noezelaya7 1 year ago
I don't care what medium you use.
All that really matters is...
Do people call you wanting to hire you to DJ?
Do they pay you to do what you do? (And I don't mean just free beer)
Do some of them hire you again?
Then you are a DJ.
Period.
I can't do on CD what I can do on vinyl but I can perform the function of a DJ with CDs. I just can't create my full club mix vibe like I can on my vinyl.
I am however impressed by those who can.

lokenovez 1 year ago
the fuckin point is CDJS ARE FUCKIN WACK! You missed the entire point. You don't dig, you download, you don't count thats bullshit.
Sounds like you don't know much of anything.
If you don't have access to get vinyl look online and buy vinyl lazy fucks. That's no excuse.
The sad part is, is that you say you learned on vinyl, BUT WERE TO FUCKING LAZY TO CARRY AROUND YOUR VINYL so you switched to CD's?
You ain't a fucking DJ, you are a fucking lazy ass, and miss the point of real turntablism.
wow06 1 year ago
@wow06 You sound like the kind of dumb ass that complains about everything. Diggin' is cool, but it doesn't make you a better dj. I'm pretty sure you don't dj, but if you do you're probably not that good anyway. You probably think you're true to the scene and represent what's real. So stop bitchin' about everything and start doing shit. If you want to change shit get off of youtube and out of your parents house and do stuff.
AbstractSteeloShow 1 year ago 7
@AbstractSteeloShow : BOOO... Im sorry. comming from a person who started learning how to mix on timecoded... pure vinyl is the best coolest and the standard of what makes a Deejay.... I think most people who hate on vinyl are lazy cats who want the fame of a deejay...
Im not saying you have to do it vinyl.. what Im saying is there is a MASSIVE learning curve between vinyl and all other formats...
I can never call myself a grand master until I can rock the house on vinyl..
Loadfaster 1 year ago
@wow06 just switched to mp3 because vinyl is to damn expensive. i use timecoded technics and count my beats but use a mixer with effect. so in your eyes am i a real or fake dj?
DUDEmethaar 1 year ago
@DUDEmethaar: as long as you can mix vinyl then your cool. but if you went to midi cdjs or timecode cause you cant mix vinyl then you I personally think its BS...
Loadfaster 1 year ago
@Loadfaster mmmmh... agreed but i do use tmecodes because vinyl is to expensive, and the music i normally mix isn't brought out on vinyl. and besides you can achieve so much more with timecodes, as long as it is in the love for the music.........
DUDEmethaar 1 year ago
@wow06 : WORD!!!!

If he can't do that, then he truly isn't a real DJ.

djmuddles 1 year ago
its not the format or the media its the dj its how you mix computers are just another tool djs will soon realtze you have to be there working the mixer and the decks be they cdjs midi controllers timecodes or vinyl its the skill and imagination of the dj that matters i use all kinds of gear i dont use auto beatmatch but i will take advantage of effects loops and other stuff to enhance my performance it all comes back to control and performance
daniellekingdjk 1 year ago
"real" doesn't mean anything
akanjeeheart 1 year ago
and also if you have a certain kind of CDJ you can save all you audio files right onto you cdj's internal memory..that way you dont need any cd's at all.....i honestly dont think there is any difference in using cdj's from vinyl aside from the fact that there is a cue button......so what im saying is...the cueing process is a little easier cuz you dont need to keep rewinding to the beginning all the time....asides from just mixing....so in my opinion CDJ'S ALL THE WAY!!!!
FIFGETHOUSE 2 years ago
also i like cdj's cuz you have alot more options to expand you knowledge of dj'ing with via FX's, hot cues, loops ect......i first started dj'ing with vinyls and to be honest i loved it....but i found cdj's had more to offer me personally use CDJ's only for the same fact that you use them for....its alot easier to carry music around...

Check out my facebook group Vinyl for Dj's
SuperFisher83 2 years ago
IMO "real" DJ's use music. Whatever you use to control it be it Midi, timecode, cd, or vinyl. Like he said at the end of the video. As long as you know what you and your equipment can do and can rock a crowd than you are a DJ.
Chrisdgaf13 2 years ago
my Jesus Christ who says that real DJs don't use CDs no real DJs use Vinyl Okay it may be scratching on CD jays is a bit of a giggle though :)

a learned on vinyl but am sick of havin dusty vinyl plus it costs £12 a record with 6 to 8 tracks so cdjs are 20 times better more smarter and experianced djs use cdjs coz they dont have dusty records and broken needles and you need to have skill to mix with cdjs also its more fun anoll got more effects and its a greater feeling and not as boaring simple as that. and am a scratch dj and am goin to by cdjs denon s3700 so a can use vinyl feel but use digital decks.

little by little vinyl has been returning to stores... I've noticed that last year. I guess electronica is making a great impact. Thanks for clearing this question up for me.

Damn ey as long the mixer is good.
then its all good..but i rather have the records than mp3's. keep it original. haha u knoe.
lilcarbon408 2 years ago
dj'ing is being done by mixing with 2 decks (regardless if it's cd or vinyl) and a mixer.
anything else (programs that mix for you) just isn't dj'ing, because all you do is select tracks ..
djerbe 2 years ago
@djerbe So you mean DJ'ing is all about mixing and beatmatching? Selecting the right tracks, for the right people, at the right mood, at the right club, at the right time is more what is about...Make people jump
simen1803 1 year ago
@simen1803 no, i mean mixing and beatmatching is what it starts with
agree with the rest of your post!
djerbe 1 year ago
Im a Dj and i say it dosent matter what you use. its all about how you use them. a real Dj has the skill to use both CDJ and Vinyl, turntables and mixers are just the tools that a Dj uses to mix
Kawiracer300 2 years ago
I'm not a Dj, but a listener who respects them for how they make the crowd move. Most big time djs now are usually just pushing buttons and turning knobs, and I could care less as long as it sounds good. And for those Djs that say only real djs use vinyl, I bet your one of the few that still stands on the corner next to the public telephone waiting for a call or making a call because you haven't advanced with the times and bought yourself a cell phone.

I love vinyl, but i don't think people should limit themselves to medium. Use what you can. If you're able to, learn to use all formats out there.
AbstractSteeloShow 2 years ago 3
there's much more I could say, but I'm only limited to 142 characters...
I'll admit it I use BPM cuz I'm lazy to beat match... Hope I didn't offend anyone!!
Learn how to beat match without looking at the BPM best advice I can give new DJ's
DJizz82 2 years ago
I always tell people to use them as tool to know where you're at because they not always accurate.
AbstractSteeloShow 2 years ago
What I think makes a real DJ is being able to beat match without looking at your DJ software such as Serato and looking at the wave form or the BPM and matching them like the new DJ's that are starting.
Also, you have to know how to scratch, I'm not talking about having skills like DJ Qbert, but knowing how and when to throw a scratch. For instance, don't don't ever scratch at a Club, but only when it's appropriate while your playing at a club or party.
Lastly, Love all kinds of music !!!!
DJizz82 2 years ago
I'm with you on that also, about not staring at your pc to match up waves. Not because i'm a hater, but because it will help you in the long run. Scratching is an art in itself, the basics come in handy. Most definitely you should love all music.
AbstractSteeloShow 2 years ago
Sup Abstract and Steelo.... you guys are the shittt!!!!
I been DJ'ing since I was 17 years old in High School, how I'm 27......(FYI) I fell in love with DJ'ing since the 7th grade, 1994. (Rebel years hahaha) I was using records for a while, but In 2006 I went into Serato because I got tired of caring my Milk Crates everywhere. However, I still carry records just in case something weird goes wrong.
I still have all my records and don't ever plan to sell. Great Memories using them!!!
DJizz82 2 years ago
The only DJs I don't consider to be real are the ones that use IPODS or strictly computers to play the music. Where's the showmanship in that? We're supposed to be entertainers not computer programmers. The IPOD thing is the equavalent of me bringing a couple of walkmens to a party back in the day. That's wack!!!!! But if your good I'll acknowledge that. I won't call you a DJ though. Maybe a music jock or human juke box. Just my opinion.
