My favorite thing about the great Mingus is this: when he was not going outside with his rhythms and notes, his "standard" bass playing was SO GOOD! He threw in a lot of non-root phrases, grace notes, etc, and stayed interesting always. Because he was such a visionary, I think that often his straight ahead playing is neglected.
Started like "roun midnight". These guys were the best. We do however have many fine young musicians coming along but the era that produced the giants of jazz must be preserved so they can learn and grow and execute. Powerful piece.
@michaelhintongtr It's from MINGUS THREE, recorded for Jubilee in the summer of 1957. I have this as a Josie Jazz Series reissue retitled CHARLIE MINGUS TRIO (and sadly, minus Nat Hentoff's original liner notes). It's a classic! What a shame that this was the only meeting between Hampton and Mingus. This album also has great versions of "Yesterdays", "I Can't Get Started", and "Laura". It's on CD. 150% recommended!!!

@rclement73 I believe it's Mingus Three? But don't quote me on that. Just Google it and then check the track listing.
